ye i was in 6th grade in queens at the time and nobody even knew what happened, kids just randomly started getting called to the office because parents were coming to take them out but nobody had any idea why, my teacher even asked me "do you know why youre leaving?" because she was curious since i was like the 7th or 8th person within a half hour to get called to leave from my class.

Now I'm a proud firefighter in NJ

Also for anyone interested, there is a reallyyy nice 9/11 memorial in Bayonne, NJ called the tear drop memorial at the Bayonne Terminal. It's SUPER nice, great memorial, AMAZING view of manhattan and there's almost never anybody there so you have the place to yourself, nice place to take a girl too due to the amazing view and privacy.

Great place for a possible meet

here's a picture of myself there last year to give you an idea of the view

I just ran into this thread so here's my piece of peace- This Sept it will be 10 years. With all due respect to anyone that lost a family member or friend, hopefully they may move forward.
Life is beautiful, so live, stay away from anger, hate and fear. Everyday is a new day.
I have and will be dealing with this day for the rest of my career as a member of the FDNY. Our house lost 8 guys, 2 weren't even on duty but still got on the rigs to respond. None of them ever made it out alive.
I see their faces on our firehouse memorial every time I'm at work as a reminder. I've seen their families every year on that day for the last 8 years. It is sad, however I see hope and happiness in their eyes mixed with anger and fear. We must move on as a society, a civil society who does not pre-judge, but uses their better judgment based on ones character, not creed, eco-social status, ethnic back-round etc.
I overstand that some of us may never forget, but with time comes healing and reflection..we should not reflect on why this happened or who did this, because it's bigger than most of us can imagine or even control. We should reflect on why life is so beautiful. This is something that is in front of my thoughts every time I step into the firehouse; the fact that life is beautiful and I may not come home from work. You only get one swing at life when you're at bat, so try to hit a home run in all you do because that time at the plate is really short.

I remember this day fully. I was 10 years old at the time. My family and I, except my older sister, were on a plane on the runway about to take off for Disney World when the captain announced that something had happened and all flights were going to be canceled. I was very confused when we exited the terminal to see everyone anxiously watching the TV. I didn't really know what happened until we got home. My sister was a mess when she heard what happened. She thought it was our plane. Scary...

talk about ironic, I was just looking over this thread a few hours ago (which that tribute brought tears to my eyes even without music [computer at work doesn't have speakers]), and now I just saw on NBC:
OSAMA BIN LADEN IS DEAD!

Great work by the Special Forces. True American Heroes that we will never even know their names. A small bit of closure especially for those of us involved in 9/11. We must keep the pedal to the metal so to speak on these wackos though. There are tons and tons of Osama's in the wake, waiting to take over...

not to mention that those who could take over maybe worse than Osama. Not to mention that there are factions all over the place. Yeah he's dead but its not like they cut the head off the snake on this thing.

Where ever I drive I will instill the thought of that Tragic day and that in the time of bedlam, we did not falter, we did not crumble, but UNITED! Lest we forget!

This picture was taken for those who haven't had the opportunity to experience the memorial. The photo may never portray the emotions or the experience itself, but is intended to show others the amount of respect we have for those lost and for those who serve.

I live about 65 miles north of the city,
and I could see these lights if I went to a high elevated clear area. Absolutely amazing and heart breaking. I was only in 6th grade when it happened and I will still never forget. <3 Great Picture.

I am a new member to Nasioc, and i wanted to say thank you for posting that link. It is a grim reminder but a reminder non the less that freedom isn't free. i was is my junior year of high school when the the attacks happened. the announcement came over the P A system and from that moment on all classes just stopped. students and teachers were glued to the TV. The one statement my auto teacher made was that the history books now need to be rewritten. every year around December i go to ground zero to see what progress has been made, but it's a very emotional reminder of how many lives were lost in that very spot.

God Bless America

Its amazing how many people put it out of their mind until the date comes around every year. Been serving in the air force since 1999 and was a part of all the disaster that went down. My father was working at Stuyvesant High school and I just happened to be having breakfast with him that morning. It was one thing for him to see what was going on and to know that we had friends and family that were working there at the time, but it was another thing for me to see it and get a phone call within the hour to get my bags and report in to be shipped in to work subway partol side by side with the Army. Everyday is a never ending memory of what we saw coming from those buildings and knowing we will never see those friends and family until the day we meet in heaven again. To all the familys that lost loved ones and close friends, don't let this go as a memory every year around the time it happened, make it a memory that lasts everyday. Everyone worked together to do their best and to this day, United We Stand! I also go down to see the memorial every year and it is very emotional. Its just a shame that it is taking this long to complete the memorial but none the less, as long as it takes to build the memorial, the better hopefully it be in the end. Never Forget, Never Forgive, ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS!
God Bless!!!!

10 years, still remember it like it was yesterday. I was 9 years old at the time.

My uncle was a civilian volunteer helping the emergency crews, this December will mark one year after his passing.

Never forget, and I'll never forget the folks here on NASIOC who were concerned about me getting out of the downtown area that day.

Never allow anyone to turn this into some advertising event.
