I had a chance to drive this beast yesterday and it is nothing short of amazing, the smooth linear pull it gives you, the instant throttle response in on/off throttle from the no bov setup (remember that Prodrive P2 video and the squirrel mincing sound it makes? Yeah, it sounds like that, except it's you driving, not clarkson )... Also a completely stealth install as mentioned, I was seriously thinking of buying this exact setup a while ago except, when it came down to it, it was too much $$... Ah well, at least it's in good hands

Nice Tys, knowing what the plots feel like in person I know your car must be madness to drive. You have a little else HP than my STi was making but probably 500-ish pounds lighter!! Must be a blast! Enjoy!

very nice man! sounds like one great experience after another, with the work RR put in, and ofcourse now that you're driving it as a whole new car!

Like everyone else, would love to check out your set-up and a ride if possible, if and when we ever meet in person
Enjoy your new beast!

sweet.... i was actually wondering why nobody does GT28's on subies.... coming from a vdub background dubs are ALL about the GT28 or "disco potato" .....300 whp 1.8L's so why cant we hit 300 on a 2.0?

i did a few searches but everyone basically said: "just do a GT30/35 or youre an idiot for wasting youre time"

im glad someone tried it and it paid off!

basically my setup would be a GT2871 or a 76 (bit bigger)

big TMIC, PE650's - id like a FMIC but its too much coin. if i did do FMIC it would be reversed intake manifold etc etc etc

id LOVE to go for a ride!

this is NOT a gt28 or whatever like what you will find on any internet search, and you wont find it for sale anywhere either, because this is a custom built turbo

ah ok cool..... is it a top secret design or would you mind sharing the specs? either way is fine i understand

do you think a rotated GT2871 would be worth my time?

"rotated gt2871". Its not so easy... well...

rotated -> all gtxx has to be rotated, unless its a custom turbo housing (these exist, there are many, like APS, AVO, RR, etc.). But any true garrett housing will never bolt up to a stock up-pipe. But garrett center sections are in a lot of stock location turbos. anyways

gt2871 -> you need to specify compressor housing, compressor wheel trim, exhaust housing, exhaust wheel trim, all of which define the turbo, and then extra stuff like uppipes headers, gates and more stuff affects things, so saying "gt2871" doesn't specify any of that. But in any case, even if you like specified TWO of the FOUR turbo-specifics, you still have four (or more) gt2871r models you can buy with a .6 / .86 combination, so its still not specific enough, and thats not saying you should use EITHER of those anyways.

So generally, saying gt xx > gt yy is totally useless unless you KNOW what changing those values I just listed does. So if you like buy a turbo kit, you can easily get a GTxx that outspools a GTyy on a CERTAIN CAR but not on paper, or a GTxx that outpowers a GTyy again on a CERTAIN CAR but not on paper (all for the same given target engine). Its all about sizing. DONT READ anything besides the garrett website, especially posts on nasioc (like this one) :-) WHEN THEY SAY "built for 1.8 - 3.0L engines", they put that there for a reason. Dont pick a turbo "built for 3.0L engines" unless you plan to rev to 9k.

anyways, aspects turbo is "gt28"-like, but its not something you will find on any site.

Patr, would eliminating the BPV in my car have negative effects with my vf34?

It's really just how you like your shifting to feel.

Blocking off the BOV/BPV is like setting an adjustible BOV to its max tightness and beyond. The left over pressure from when you close throttle ends up going out backwards from the turbo instead of the BPV (which is set tight, or just blocked off). So expect to hear lots of turbo compressor surge "chatter".

I find when the BOV is tight or blocked off, its easier to shift between gears, but there will also be compressor surge which makes for rough throttle 'let offs', like when you get off throttle at higher rpms going up hill.

Your vf34 should be fine with that.

My current setup is the APS FMIC bov where you can adjust it. I have a longer adjustment bolt in it right now so i can get a combination of recirculation (less running rich btw shifts) and i get the benfits of when the car would be running with it blocked off.

I read somewhere that ball bearing turbos are not affected by compresser surge. Is that correct?

I dont want to quote someone that i talk to a lot from a shop, but someone said to me "Don't worry about chatter, just dont go chatter happy doing it on purpose all the time" ie: Lug engine to build boost and let off to make noise. etc.

Ive been chattering for 2 years now, no problems.

I don't often post to NASIOC, but had to share this dyno plot. Just got the car back from RR. This is my 05 STi + RR 3" catless exhaust + APS 65mm CAI.

Car drives like you'd imagine from the plot, super smooth and strong all through the rev range. Thanks to Pat and co. for a superb tuning job!

Just got dyno'd on the 2.0L to see what she'd do before I stuck the 2.5L in... a little disappointed with outcome but the 2.5L will be alot stronger and more productive. All in all, not a bad gain over stock for a 2.0L WRX.
