Could be, drill and enlarge holes in bracket that mounts to housing to gain some clearance?

So actually I made a little progress before heading into work today
I took the retaining clip off the arm and was going to slide the arm out of the WG flapper arm. But there was a lot of rust build up so I gave it a few taps with a large allen wrench I had handy
The arm still didnt come out simply because of the angle, Ill have to loosen up the bracket to get the clearance
But after hitting the arm "joint" that couple times, the flapper now is more or less as tight against the WG port as I would expect it should be

Ok so while Im messing around with the turbo, Ive been doing some searching for the other things I want to get as long as the whole exhaust is off the car

Starting from the front I think the first purchase is going to be this:
Tomei UEL Manifold with Upipe

That would be a nice piece! Can i recommend saving some cash and buying a set of ported oem 02 headers along with a grimmspeed crosspipe that would work pretty much the same? If you are interested i know someone who has that for sale

Nice work so far, seems like the car has some nice mods already on it. I own a 02 psm wagon so i enjoy seeing bugeyes come back to life.

So Ive been taking parts off the RS and swapped out the seats today:
I like the 05RS ones much better

Only thing is the floor brackets on the 05's are rusty from being winter driven
so I hit en with a wire brush and threw on some POR15

Did the front ones today: Ill let em dry and then get the back sides
Then they just need a once over with the steam cleaner and they will go in

The thing is as soon as I have the parts off the old RS that I want Im having a auto recycler come haul it away, Im assuming having seats in it will yield more $$

Anyway: 05 black interior shampooed and drying before going into the WRX
You should have seen the dirt come out of these things!!!

Ok so a bit of an update:

Removed the rest of the exhaust (Manifold, upipe, cat pipe + cat-back) and added the parts to the pile:

-As far as everything I noticed: the manifold has a bung welded into it that allows for install of a thermal probe essentially acting as the EGT since the uppipe is aftermarket and has no bung for the OEM one. Then it looks like a magnaflow cat pipe and catback that goes from 3" to 2.5" at the last portion. You can also see the big ol dump pipe that came off that has a pipe for a cutout welded into it

So then I set about removing the pyrometer guage out of the pillar and subsequent wiring: Oh boy lots of aftermarket wiring.
Ill get more into that later on but so far there is a python unit (im assuming this is some sort of security unit), an HF antenna booster that was wired into the power wire for the thermal probe guage, and some sort of relay that has a bunch of wired running to it

and finally swapped in the grimmspeed hood struts from the RS

Yup. With a cast cutout on the DP, dumping on the trans

Great exhaust though. The old ones with the rolled tip (like yours, OP) did have the Magnaflow muffler. Not sure about the RFL variant. I should know, too. Had them both in 2003

The original turbos non rfl was a magnaflow. That does look like an original Turboxs exhaust and that means it's awesome. I'd hold onto that setup if I was you... You can get a straight pipe to swap in where that high flow cat is too.

Hmm I dunno, I want a new DP (one that doesnt have a cutout welded onto it) I was looking at the grimmspeed one but I dunno if the flat flange at the end will work with the donut flange on the existing cat-back.
Also I kind of wanted something all 3" instead of having the drop to 2.5" at the end

unless you like spending money, i would just cut off that cutoff dump and weld it flat again.

those pipes are SOLID. also expensive, but look at that stainless after a decade!

i pulled off my magnaflow axleback (part of the txs exhaust systems) a few months ago after a similar decade. it got a little dented from a water pipe while the roads were ripped up outside my house but the thing is still in great shape. i love the sound still. i'm just 40 now with two little girls and i'd like things a little bit quieter, so i went to sti oem. (and a vta ewg ha!)

the oem exhaust pipes that i've left on the car? only the headers remain, and they have been welded too. everything else is gone to the rust heap.

Did some more fiddling yesterday:
I noticed that when I pulled the turbo that the OEM turbo inlet was all warped and wonkey on the turbo side so I pulled it ... going to replace it with a silicone one ... Im thinking Perrin right now

Also another thing I noticed when I pulled the trubo is there was a lot of oil leaking from the oil return, the connections were so loose that I just pulled up on the turbo and it slid right out, so Im gonna clean the area up a bit and replace the OEM clamps with some hose clamps probably

Then there is this:
Is this supposed to go to anything it is it just like a vent port or something?

So once again I was out taking parts off the RS and and intended to put my shift knob/extension on the WRX and just use whatever short shifter was already on it.
But thing never work out that easy...

The Momo knob that was on there was cross threaded like a bitch, and even after using vice grips the inner part of the knob stripped out while still remaining affixed to the shifter ... so reluctantly I grabbed the hack saw

Its a shame too b/c the knob was nice and I was planning on selling it

Anywho, so then I just swapped in my agency power short shifter

Oh and I also took out the head unit out of the RS and put the OEM one back in.
Anyone know if the dash kit for an 05 will fit in the 02? More specifically will the pig-tail that goes from the back of the aftermarket HU to the factory plug work b/c that would be very simple!

So Ive got the day off and gonna be up and down to the garage fiddling with the new and old imprezas:
First update is:
I put the head unit and pocket from the 05 onto the 02 stereo brackets. Seems to fit like it should:

Then I installed it. All the wiring hooked right up but the battery is disconnected right now due to the mess of wiring Im cleaning up under the dash:

Then I got to the wiring. Most of the mess seems to be from the apexi auto timer shown here:

Things looked real complicated until I saw that the timer harness plugged in-line with an existing OEM plug:

Then that pretty much left this yellow wire which looks like it needs to be spliced back together but looks like it is actually part of the aftermarket security system. In the picture the yellow arrow points at a black sort of solenoid unit ... is this OEM or added as part of the security unit (some of the wires from the security unit go to this box pointed out by the yellow arrow)

Some parts:

Perrin turbo inlet:

And a set of connectors to prevent the airbag light from being on since the RS seats dont have side impact air bags. Made by madmax911!

Cleaned up the rest of the messy wiring situation today
This is everything that was removed:
Auto timer (and what im assuming is a additional harness to splice into the security unit)

Security/Alarm unit:

[/url]

Exhaust cutout wiring:

Leaves me with this much cleaner under-dash
Just gotta tidy up the wiring to the guages and aftermarket rearview mirror once I get a wideband installed

... I was too chicken/too lazy to get the key and make sure the electronics work properly. Thats what im most worried about right now

Installed the turbo inlet today:

Mocked it up to the turbo just to test the fit:

Also removed, cleaned, and secured with a hose clamp the rubber oil drain from the turbo, ill use a hose clamp on the other end when its installed

And I got a good look at that disconnected PCV hose I mentioned. Looks like the previous owner left it off sue to fitment issues with the oil pressure sending unit:

Lastly experimented with an intake setup. Used the in-fender bit of the Injen cold air intake left over from the hybrid intake on the old 2.5RS:

The pipe ends up right behind the fog ligt with enough room for the Injen filter. Just gotta get one of the fog light intake inserts

I also hooked the battery up and tried the electronics. The lock/unlock remote works properly, and the key seems to turn the electronics on all fine. Ill just have to see if the ignition works once everything is finished

I noticed that the projector headlights that came on the car utilize an H1 bulb. So I put in the HIDs that came off the 05RS:

Also received this yesterday:
