With the built block responses I have gotten so far; an EJ207 path is not out of the park yet.
Actually the only exception is P2P, he has been great. *started off great then went to complete poo
The usual recommendations have been dipsticks.

I would still need the price of the GRB-EJ207s to come down a bit more since I also need the cylinder heads for an "easy-er" convert to 32bit stuffs. Plus having to delete all of the exhAVCS. So not exactly simple plan either.
Also uncertain if an EJ207 would be optimal with my 6MT gear spread (higher ratio) or my current turbo. Both could be changed if needed I suppose.

Going the GR EJ207 route does perk my interest of integrating various Subaru part offerings. It is not looking like a good match to my driveline (not typical gearing) and I do not want to risk proving this true. So an EJ20 is pretty much out of the picture now. However I would like to see posts of people actually doing those swaps because it would be interesting. Hoping that the two EJ207 threads get some content of those swap experiences eventually.

A built EJ25 just fits in better although at a bit higher expense. I have the short block combination sorted out. Decided to change out a few component selections based on the builders' input. I feel pretty good about it.
Sorting through the cylinder head mixture now. Waiting to see if I can supply some of the parts and take advantage of a few sales going on.

Honestly I thought I would be at this point more so around mid-year.

Ahh that is encouraging thanks for sharing it. And I also found the dang extAVCS delete plate photos that I was looking around for (PREtuning).
...I'm already heading down the built EJ25 path though. Valvetrain components are on their way. Got to pull some parts off an old EJ25 case I have laying around. Then ship some junk to Texas and New Jersey. Eventually those get joined up back here in "awesome-ish" IL.
My luck is that I'll get this all done, installed, and then tuned. Then our illustrious state representatives will do something more stupid then their usual.

updated short block plan
factory EJ25 crankshaft, cases, case bolts, covers, etc
closed deck
Tomei MLS head gaskets
14mm IAG/ARP head studs
pinned and line bored mains
Callies H-beam upgraded rings/wrist pins
12mm oil pump

Updated cyl head plans
new factory D25 castings - retains my AVCS pipes
pocket porting, valve job, milled, assembled, lash to cams
new factory buckets
drilled for 14mm studs
GSC s2 billet camshafts
GSC beehive spring Ti retainer kit
GSC mang/bronze guides
GSC spring seats and seals
GSC std size intake and exhaust valves

In retrospect the short block was a complete disaster. The cyl heads were not that great either.

I painfully need to fix all the earlier photos and do some cleanup. Probably just start over from scratch and It would be less daunting.

Ha. That is tempting...for science of course.

2nd home quarantine drive so far this spring. Recently changed gear oil in the 6MT and R180. Waiting on a new bcs hose tee to arrive then changing that out. The plastic one I got at NAPA is getting soft from engine heat. Switched the leaking Process West TMIC out for a new one, but it is painted black instead. Not sure what paint color I preferred. Leaking one will get dropped off at a friends to TIG weld it up.

I'm 90% sure I'm swapping the Tomei Ti exhaust out for the Invidia Q300 I have around. I love the technical aspect and WOT sound of the Tomei but...its cruising around volume detracts from the enjoyment. Plus Tomei exhausts seem to be the new "rally mudflaps and vape pens" for all clapped out subies rolling around.

NYEEEEEES! I finally finished up wiring the Steering Wheel Controls and they WORK awesome. All of the button functions work (att, vol-, vol+, mode, chan-, and chan+). The SWC button illumination works "enough"; as in they illuminate on/off with the rest of the interior lights but they will not dim. There is just no way to add SWC dimming on a GD even with the three new roll connector circuits.
Also mounted up the STI Genome meters in the Defi pod and finally snapped it into the dash. I flipped over the clock/SRS lamp and mounted it just over the radio cavity. This would allow me to check the lamp function by removing the radio instead of removing the Defi pod, in event of any future SRS issues. I have some sensor harnesses still to route for the new ECT, EOT, and FP meters. Added the M-warning lamp I had around to indicate if any meter warn is triggered.
I still have some additional wire routing to revisit and swap out DCCD controllers but I'll get around to all that later.

I didn't really comment much on the wheel while I was sorting the messy SWC info out there. Needed a wheel that would mount the SWC switches and I really did not like the Legacy SpecB MOMO wheel. So ordered up a DAMD round red stitch. Round versions are less than flat bottom wheels. Thankfully I do not like flat bottom wheels on street cars, so I saved a bit of cash and time. I like this wheel but if I was not using SWCs I would just opt to re-wrap the STI wheel instead.

That is one of the things I wish my STi had when I owned it. I got used to driving my daily with nice steering wheel controls and when I'd get into my STi, I actually had to look down at the stereo to push buttons.

I was looking at the DAMD wheels but flat bottom. Can't drop the $$ on them but they do look very good lol

As if I don't have enough projects lined up on my wrx...

So where exactly did the steering wheel controls come from? I thought DAMD just offered the "frame" and nice outside wheel. Was it tough to figure out the wiring? I'm very interested in this mod because, while I like my double DIN unit, I can't stand reaching for the rather small controls.

Also, I see you have a gauge in the ashtray area. have you considered the subtle solutions blank plate and just drill or cut holes into that plate? I did that to add USB and AUX connections to my DIN unit and also drilled a hole for the oem socket.

Same happened to me. My daily is an auto but I got used to the SWCs it had. Then I started wanting it in my WRX. The ATT/mute is probably the best feature for me. I can lower the volume with a push of one button...then back to the original vol with another button push. I like!

I was not sure about this expense either but so far I am happy I made it. I would rather they did not have the "gun grip" palm rests though. I don't really find those ideal for my driving.

Upgrades are NEVER done my friend. The SWCs are from a Legacy SpecB [83153AG000] but they have to be grafted into a GD since it was not designed with those in mind. There are a few ways to do it but I used another clockspring [83116AG02A], Metra ASWC-1, Legacy cruise control switch connector, and some wiring.
The DAMD wheels for GDs are a frame that they wrapped and come with these blank plates. You remove those to mount the SWCs. I swapped over my STI airbag and cover from my existing wheel.
I had one of the subtle plates which was made very well but it just didn't look right for what I was after. I will admit that I greatly dislike digital meters and UEGO especially with the constant dancing light show. Ehh. So I did not need an ashtray or an AUX port but keeping the 12v power socket was good. Some quick trimming of that assembly got me a mount that I can close the lid when I want to ignore the UEGO or when it's parked somewhere.

Oh and I forgot. I pulled the Tomei CBE off and installed the Invidia Q300. Sad to see the super light Ti CBE gone but so glad I changed it. With the mods I have; I can't appropriately describe how effing loud the Tomei was. It was NOT enjoyable for many reasons.
The noise level of the Q300 is pretty good. Quiet-er when needed and noticeable when WOT. I just have to get rid of the polished look that I do not like. Thinking I will have it thermal coated dull silver along with the lower half of the downpipe this winter.

I envy you guys that are so slick with wiring things. It has always been intimidating to me. Great job, JarHarms! Always look forward to these updates.

BTW, not sure if you mentioned it before, but is your gauge pod for a RHD or is it just the angle of the pic? Either way, I'm pretty confident nothing comes close to the look of Defi gauges. So perfect.

Took a lot of trial/error and willingness to just go for it. A good soldering iron, shrink tube, and braided sleeve really offset my mistakes.
The dash pod is center aimed but in the photo it does appear to be RHD oriented. I can't take photos that great either
Agreed I like the Defi Link meters best. Especially black face, green illum, and imperial units. If I can just find the last few I have been looking for I would swap out the STI Genomes for Defi imperials. I have some Defi white BF meters hanging around too but I just do not like those as much.

Driving the WRX over this summer and resisting taking it down for modifications has turned out to be a great decision. It offsets the new engine project taking a complete crap-turn, being pretty stressful, and having me utter MF-er quite often.

This one is across town from me (<10min) and typically tube tests at E85-E90. There is also a Casey's across the street that typically tube tests at E75-E83. I think there is another station offering E85 in the local area as well. So I am plenty covered on corn. Have not looked around work (when we go back) to see if there is one nearby. I know I can get 1 work round trip done as long as I leave with a mostly full tank.
