Weight balance- EJ20G comparison
While I had the weighing gear, I thought I would put a GC8 2l 6 speed conversion race car (similarly stripped out) for comparison. Here's what I got:
LF. RF. LR. RR. Cross wt. Cross % Car. 341. 353.5. 213.5. 218.5. 567. 50.33% Car & drv. 346.5. 386. 222. 243. 600.5. 50.8% Fuel is 10l. So overall weight is 1126kg for the STi and 1216kg for the V8 conversion. The V8 is about 90kg heavier in total. The V8 gained 80kg in the rear and only 10kg in the front! Interesting.

Dang those are some good #'s. More rear weight is welcome on our cars anyways

So you think within 1% on cross balance is ok? Gotta say the car feels real stable to drive.

I'm not an expert on chassi dynamics but that seems perfectly reasonable and could probably made perfect with some relocation of some things

Hi guys. I've had a few requests for engine bay shots and dug up this video of the first start of the engine. This small vid includes engine shots with car running.
So far this car has been running fine. Last year it ran in a 300km endurance race. 2/3 distance the left rear CV seized resulting in a broken left rear axle (still running R180 rear end). Just wanted to say awesome build! Wish I had been following this when you first started but seems like you figured it all out pretty easily! The weight balance numbers you listed were very interesting indeed. I have a 2JZ GDB drift car and have some borrowed scales that I actually plan to use tonight. I don't expect it to be as good as yours lol. I know in terms of overall weight, my car went up 90kg to an overall weight of 1292kg when I went to 2JZ. We'll see about front to rear lol.
I'd definitely recommend going to an r200 rear end if you haven't already. I run a infinity q45 which has a 3.5 final which is great for the turbo powerband, but there are tons of ratios in r200's. I also use 350z axles which are practically indestructible, they are caged and much better than the tripod style cv style of s13/14 etc. and cheap off eBay...not sure though how easy they are to find in the uk. For the hubs, I run S14 5x114 and machine down the OD just a little and they press right into sti/svx wheel bearings. Spline of hubs is same for a ton of nissans. I run maybe a 10mm spacer (just a piece of pipe with od that matches the wheel bearing) on the inside of the hub to keep the axles from bottoming out against the knuckle and a ~30mm machined spacer on the right hand side between the diff output flange and inner axle cv flange. Have yet to have any axle issues and doubt I ever will at 600whp/tq and competitive drifting lol. Including running 275/35/18 NT01's at 18psi lol. It's bomb proof. The subframe on the other hand, I have had issues, but then again its drifting lol. I do suggest though that you make a brace from the tbar area that connects to the rear subframe, and also possibly make a threaded part on top of the subframe, so you can plate in the trunk area right behind rear firewall and run a bolt through the chassis there into the rear subframe to lock it out. Hey thanks for the post. I am always interested in ways to improve this build and appreciate the information you have provided.
My R180 set up has been very good, with the exception of the LHS CV joint which overheats over the course of an endurance race (180 miles). We have run the race twice now, and at about the half way point, the CV cooks itself, seizes and breaks the axle. I thought the first time might have been just a dodgy CV but the second one at about the same distance is too coincidental. Have checked axle float, angles and stuff but no solution yet. So this xmas I will put my R200 in and see how it goes in terms of CV temp differential left to right. I just need the problem gone so we can complete the race. I have locked out the subframe with the usual 2 subframe locking bolts. You think I need a central one? If you could post some pics of this area on your car, as well as the diff braving, I would be interested. Just to see. Also, with the Nissan hubs into Subie knuckles, what rotors did you run? Any issues lining up with the brake caliper? Did you retain the Subie handbrake set up? This is the area I am sorting right now and am hoping the 2004 sti 114.5 rotors will work ok. Fingers crossed.... |

With the r200, you will need some way to lock it out in the front. Since you are using a fuel cell I believe (?) you could probably do something like this:
Here is mine, I tried to circle where the two mounting points are on the top: It bolts from the top area right behind the rear firewall, I plated this spot: With regards to brake rotors, I use sti rotors, as long as you machine the base of the s14 hubs to match the sti, (should be pretty simple stuff for a machinist who works with lathes everyday) you'll be fine with the brakes working. You do need to bore out the centering ring of the rotor. I forgot the exact measurement, I believe it's basically 10mm (sti is 56.1mm and s14 is 66.1mm). Will be putting up some pics of my R200 longnose conversion..... Sorry about the links below but I am still looking around for an image hosting site...
I used the R200 longnose diff as I believe it is the easiest upgrade. Pretty much just bolts straight in. Even the tail shaft fit in perfectly, although I did need a new companion flange from a 2000 300ZX Nissan. General view of diff. Note square section tube steel placed between body and top of diff mount to help support the diff during hard launches. The forward 2 diff mount bolts now go from body shell inside the car, through a 5mm stiffening plate on the inside of the car, through the square tubes, through the reinforced diff carrier, and finally through the diff.
