I usually hate the flex head. 99% of the time I don't need them and 5% of the time they are too bulky for what I'm working on or they come unlocked. The old Craftsman professional line were great, though they have not made them for years so it's probably not an option. My advice for ratcheting box end wrenches is always keep them simple and go with the thinnest profile between the outside of the box end and the inside, next most important thing being the number of teeth.

+1 All of the above for ratcheting wrenches.

Eventually I ended up with flex and fixed heads. Then short flex heads as well. If I could only have one set it would be the flex head since the odd time they're the best tool for the job they're godsends.

My 2017 Fiesta ST has been out of warranty for three weeks and two weeks ago I started getting a truly horrid "whistling" sound from the climate control. It's right around the area that the cabin air filter is, and it gets worse at high fan speeds and when the air is set to recirculate. Cursory googling suggests that this is a dirty blower motor, which makes sense since I live in Portland and park outside under trees all the time. Makes sense that some junk would have made it in.

I have two local dealerships. One is basically run by maniacs and I've never had any luck with their service department not ****ing things up worse. The other, where I bought the car, was pretty helpful on the phone and said that given the warranty situation they'd sell me the parts at cost and give me a discount on labor. So I brought it in and they had a guy take a look at it - an older guy with a hearing aid. He said he couldn't hear anything wrong. I thought he was ****ing with me. He was not ****ing with me.

So uh. What do I do? Does this sound symptomatic of a dirty/clogged blower motor?

I'd rather have more than a hunch before I rip the dash out.

I'm not over 36k but the warranty expired 10/30/2020. I'll try to track down the help line.

thats even better

"Hi Im less than a month out of warranty, I'm still under warranty mileage - Ive taken it to a dealer its making a noise that they put a tech who has hearing difficulties on to diagnose and I feel like Im being given the run around I was wondering if there is any possibility I can get some help"

https://corporate.ford.com/contact.html

service managers and district managers have literal goodwill codes they can file. you might not get 100% coverage but youll probably end up with a split if you kill them with kindness

I have a fixed head set of Gearwrench. They are great most of the time, except the ratcheting end has a lip on it that makes it so the wrench doesn't slip down past the nut. It's great for that intended purpose, but makes it so the wrench can only be used with the handle angled away from the surface. It doesn't like much of a gripe until it's the only wrench you have handy and it won't fit into a space because you can't flip the box end over to angle the handle in the opposite direction.

Somewhat car related: I bought the 20-ton press from Northern Tool for around $200. Already used it a few times to press some bearings in/out, separate a shaft and even put a sharp bend in a piece of aluminum. 10/10 would recommend. I heard the 10-ton is rinky dink, so I would get at least the 20-ton if you're thinking about getting one.

Another great tool I recently purchased - great for rusty screws in places you don't want to mess up. You won't use it very often but when you need it, you need it.

how are people cutting sheetmetal?

I had to put a new footwell in my LandRover and had to cut a bunch of it - I started out with an airsaw it was ok but awkward at a point, then a jigsaw and that sucked, then went to look at bandsaws but i guess 'normal' ones spin too fast for metal so I ended up buying a scroll saw - which worked well but that cant be the right way

I have a grinder but doesnt work well on curved cuts and thin metal and im not at the point yet where I *need* a plasma torch

I've always seen body guys using either a press brake or a sheet metal nibbler.

Start here;

While you have it open, blow out the pipes with compressed air from the inlets and the outlets while the blower is running. You can also do a condenser refresh with one of the condenser cleaning foams. Check the fresh air inlet somewhere around the windshield wipers.

Do the simple stuff first.

On the blower noise thing:
Almost every vehicle I've had with blower motor noises has been due to leaves and crap getting stuck in the "hamster wheel". Stick a wet/dry vac tube up there with the cabin air filter off and it will likely get most of it out. Like the above post said, you can use compressed air if it doesn't help, but you need to be careful that it doesn't end up in the ductwork.

On the cutting sheetmetal thing:
I typically use a combo of the Wheel of Death (angle grinder w/cutoff wheel) and metal cutting shears. You can also scour the metal with the cutoff disc and use a chisel to break the metal in tough spots. This works well when you need to be careful of what's underneath the floor.

Ive used something similar for removing rusted screws holding the brake disks.
I should buy one of those.

Ive also used one of those stripped screws extractors (https://www.amazon.com/Extractor-Str...s%2C311&sr=1-7) and they also work pretty good, if you follow instructions.
Too bad the nut on the other side, which was unaccessible, was rotating too.

Good call on those, I was thinking about getting up there and trying something like this since the noise appears to be coming from around the cabin air filter, but replacing the "hamster wheel" involves removing the center console, pedal assembly, and steering wheel and column.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have two projects I'm working on, both manual transmissions. I have one with the transmission coming out, and one with the engine out. When I'm putting everything back together, do I put the clutch and flexplate on the engine or the transmission to mate them? Is it car dependent?

FWIW, one is a B6 Audi and the other is a Jeep Patriot.

You bolt the flex plate to the crank, then the clutch to the flex plate. Input shaft on the transmission then slides in.

Flex plate is for an automatic.

Flywheel is for a manual transmission.

Bolt the flywheel to the engine, bolt the clutch to the flywheel. Be sure to alight the clutch disc in the center of the pilot bearing or you wont be able to get the input shaft of the transmission through the clutch disc and into the pilot bearing.

FWIW its easier to mate them when they are out of the car. Can you just remove the engine and transmission as one piece?
