05 WRX Wagon Spare Tire Sub Box Build - Pics and Lessons Learned
Heyo. Just wanted to post up a project I just finished. I built a sub box that fits over the spare tire (so you can keep it in) and nets the greatest possible volume while still being a stealth installation.
Overall volume: just under 1 cuft Subwoofer: JL 12TW3-D4; 12" shallow mount sub Amplifier: Kicker KXA800.5 The front and rear speakers took a good bit of work to fit properly and "stock-like" as well but this post focuses on the sub box. I may add pics in a reply to this one after this post is done. This was a fun project that took over 20 hours...because I'm just figuring stuff out on the fly, which took a bit of re-dos in some parts. If I were to do this again: - Make the fit in the bell of the spare tire a bit less precise by adding a small layer of felt or poster board and taping over that. It fits TOO perfectly right now, meaning that the spare needs to be oriented a specific way due to the locations of small spot welds to easily remove the box. It will fit just fine in other orientations but there's a bit of compression/friction making it tough to pull out. - Lay an initial layer of woven fiberglass cloth (vise mat) to have a much cleaner exterior overall with less cleanup. The bulk of the box needs to be mat unless you want to be laying cloth for days...and a lot more money. - Spend the money on some aluminum tape instead of just masking tape. It separated just fine from the car but it's impossible to get all of the masking tape off the outside of the box. A final layer of aluminum tape would separate much cleaner (I think). - Leave a little more clearance towards the back of the car. The box is technically removable right now but it's by no means convenient. More clearance in interference areas would go a long way to user-friendliness. - Dont use rubberized undercoating. It's a waste and just makes a mess. If your box isn't sealing, just fix the spots it's leaking. No broadly applied fix is going to work how you want it to. To find leaks, just fill with water (before attaching your MDF baffle). If it can hold water, good odds it can hold air. Here are the project build photos:

Why use Imgur here?
A whole lot more people will see your images if you embed them in your post, using the NASIOC image host.
