"The Blob" is taking over my LCD odometer!
I like old horror movies as much as the next guy, but I'm not pleased that the LCD odometer display in my '98 JDM Impreza STi V4 has been overrun by The Blob.
This first image is with no power... This is with the key turned... And this is just to show the layout of the V4 instrument cluster... I suspect The Blob has taken over more LCD odometers than just mine. Has anyone else here experienced this? I've watched several YouTube videos where faulty LCD displays in various electronic items have been repaired. I'm hoping the same can be done with this. Any words of wisdom? And if you've never seen the original Blob...

There may be excessive pressure on the LCD display causing that issue.

Of course, that then begs the question... what would have caused the pressure to develop against the LCD display in the first place? I'll look into this. Thanks very much for the suggestion. |

The most likely fix will be a replacement speedometer.

All feedback appreciated
That's not what I wish to hear ... but yeah, I realize that's a definite possibility. I'd rather repair or replace just the LCD display, but this may be wishful thinking. So... I'd love to hear from someone who's been able to rectify this issue without the need to replace the whole speedometer/odometer assembly!

You could possibly find a lcd that would work on Digikey.com if you need to replace it. 22 years is a long time for a lcd to last.

I learned something in my German car experience a few years ago.. The LCD fluid (Liquid Crystals) are not always a quartz solution. It may be an Ammonia crystal solution. It may be a different solution due to temperature tolerances.
I'm not totally sure, but when the Ammonia solution actually leaks it will cause lots of corrosion. Beware of that. |

I apologize, but I don't have anything of value to contribute to this thread, but since I live in Phoenixville, PA (where The Blob was filmed) this thread did give me a chuckle...

Happy to oblige
No problem. As well as hoping to find some information, I was trying to make the opening post at least a little entertaining.
