Default Dumb question: what does the battery tie down to?

Hello. My 2003 Subaru came with no battery, and just the old rusty tie-downs, but nowhere can I find out what those threaded j-hook things are supposed to connect to. I have made a metal plate to suck down the battery to and give it some heft, but I don't know what a better solution would be.

The hooks on the tie down go into holes on the sides of the plate the battery sits on by the driver side headlight

This picture found online should give you an idea. Make sure the plastic battery tray is in place.

That could be my issue, my car came without the plastic tray. Thanks!

The plastic tray doesn't matter. Your car is an 03 Subaru which likely means that the hooks now go to air where rust has disintegrated the metal that used to be there.

I don't know what the plastic battery tray in other models looks like, but with my GF8, the hold-down bolts go through indentations in the sides of the tray, which help to hold the tray (and therefore the battery) from sliding around.

The plastic tray may not be absolutely necessary for holding the battery down, but it certainly has other benefits.
