Re: Bipods
Hey ya'll,
Thanks so much for the input on the bipod, it was super helpful! I ended up ordering an Atlas BT65-LW17 and the M-Lok adapter. .../cry, but once! That Tikka is gonna be like 20lb by the time I'm done, lol. So next question: Is there a (modern) "Home Defense" kind of thread? Some searching found an attack Chihuahua, several probably legit threads about CCW/HD but from 2007/2008 (kinda understandable), Castle Doctrine from 2014... Anyway, modern? I don't want to start bumping 10+ year old threads if there's something better. I've been doing a lot of research and already applying basics at home, and always like hearing from OT. I do understand that a lot of this kinda stuff doesn't exactly age and the basics are still relevant. Soft and hard deterrence, hardening, monitoring, defense, planning, and so on. |

Obviously a home alarm. Mine is cellular based with battery backup so even if my power is cut, it still works. I can arm/disarm on the keypads or via app on the phone. I also run an elaborate home surveillance system. 14 cameras in all, 2 are Ring devices as I wanted audio and a mic in those locations The rest are wired in and it’s a mix of PTZ’s, and PTZ zoom cameras and 2 trackers that automatically track humans. All set to record motion. I run dual ISP’s at home, with UPS, and my DVR for the system is also hidden and has UPS so even a power cut I can remote monitor the house if I’m not at home and the UPS cannot be found. The trackers have an app but I use the main DVR app to control them then ring has an app specifically for their devices since they aren’t hooked into my DVR. All exterior doors have deadbolts that are dual cylinders. So even if an attacker or thief could bust the multi pane windows there are no levers to flip to unlock the door, you need a key. That door is not going to open, period. And when I redid the front door, I forget the name of the product but I bought a security mounting system that you have to drill into the frame. Makes a door kick damn near impossible unless it’s the fire department or LE and either will have a hard time. Front door has a security storm door on it also that has a 3 point locking mechanism on it and I paid extra for the glass in it. The glass is like a windshield. Even a brick thrown at it multiple times will not break it, it’ll crack but not break and I’ve seen video of someone attempting it. My interior doors were hollow core so as I replaced them one by one with solid core I put locking handles on the bedroom doors and the closets that have “items” worth something. So if an idiot can even get through my security measures, inside, they have more issues getting into rooms. If I travel, I lock the whole place up, best of luck. All windows of the house are modern multipane that are a bish to get through. And all of them have fencing around them (8ft to 10ft fencing) sans the front 3 and that’s the front door area with above said devices installed. Any vehicle parked outside has a compustar alarm with app connectivity. So anywhere in the world you have WiFi or cellular connectivity you can remotely monitor, start, etc. I was out of town for 3 weeks last Oct/Nov and the alarm would let me know my battery in the vehicle was low. So I fired up my camera pointed at the vehicles and remote started it to charge it 4000 miles away. HD weapon remains a Benelli M4 with 21 shells onboard. 7+1+1 in it with 2 side saddles, one on the receiver, one on the stock, each saddle has 6 rounds so 21 in all. I use Federal buckshot and with a shottie you need to pattern the load at the range so you know the spread. The M4 has laser/light combo on it and it’s slung with QD’s. I keep ear pro in the nightstand. I will be changing this to a braced Scorpion with a can sometime this year. This will eliminate the need for ear pro and save my K9’s ears. It’s just a more convenient package. Just a light mounted on it. My safe is within easy reach of my bed, quick, so sometimes I have the HD weapon close other times it’s at the front of the safe at the ready. And I always have my CCW close by in a holster. There there is the K9. I have a Mal, that I trained in Schuthund for personal protection. She isn’t titled as I have no need as I’m not breeding. My previous GSD was the same. I train them on the side. A good K9 is the most valuable. You don’t have to get a GSD, Mal, etc, but it’s good to have one because of their ears. Many breeds are defensive in nature and will protect the pack. Just the dog barking will deter thieves to move on to easier prey. Defensive positions in the house to me are pointless. You fight from wherever you are. If you have a family just practice getting all of them, quickly into one location. I live in a nice area with very low crime but since the pandemic started, we are seeing things we have never seen before. We have some thugs checking car doors. If they are open they are looting it. they are breaking into some of them. And I got a guy busted already. He was opening up all our mailboxes on the street very late at night stealing. He couldn’t have got much as most people check them every day. But I got video of him doing it up and down the street, including my mailbox. We called LE and they wanted my DVR but I gave them video files on a zip and they busted the f’er. |

Relax. If someone wants you dead, you’re likely dead. The only thing obsession with home defense produces is paranoia.

Like everything, it's a sliding scale and anything more than what you'd personally do is just as absurd as anything less. Yeah, he's a bit more gung-ho than me, or most anybody else . But do you lock your front door at night? I mean, if somebody wants you dead...

As I have slowly remodeled parts of the house, put in new doors, windows, etc, each time it was just an extra step to beef ish up. Need new door handles, locking ones a couple bucks extra per, same for deadbolts. Needed new storm door for the front, the security version an extra $100 or so. Surveillance system, my guy was selling all hardware at cost and just charging me labor. Fencing was there when I bought the house. Wood has been replaced and I have added some to one side to block off that side of the house that has the condenser, power meters, all copper, fiber, coax, power, and gas line. Neighborhood is alley fed and usually if anything is going to happen, will happen in the back. House has severely appreciated so all good investments. The officer that showed up for zip drive said "you've have to be a dumb ass to f around your property" and I laughed as he was petting the Mal. I save a lot of $ in other areas so yeah I take security seriously, home and autos. |

Over the weekends I helped her move I was finding magazines in odd places. Book shelf at the end of the entrance hallway. Basket on the bar portion of the entrance to her kitchen. Drawer in a table at the top of her stairs... just all over the place. Her answer was that you never know where you're going to need to reload. It was like a Mario brothers world with 1ups strategically placed around the house. |

Pre, thanks for the giant response! I'm not gonna quote it all because it was so extensive, so just going to write a little by category.
Alarm + Cams - I currently have an Xfinity security system, which has been really nice. I have an open/close sensor on every downstairs window and door, two motion sensors and two indoor cams. I want to add a couple exterior cams as well, but 14 does sound like a lot. Doors - Got kids in the house so no double cylinders except on the front security door, but that's only locked using the handle twist lock, and a very rarely accessed side door on the garage. I would like to get a solid door for the master bedroom. Even in the rental I could take it with me to the next house. I've replaced the short hinge and plate screws with 3" screws, adding a few upgraded plates but nothing full door. I've seen the videos and stuff, but I'm in a rental and I'm not ripping out the door frames. I did find a neat adapter for the deadbolt that prevents lockpicking by freezing the interior lever. Flip Guard - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HZD8S8G/?tag=fhmeag-20 All the doors and frames at this place show signs of some attempted force applied. The garage side door seems pretty rotten in a few places, so just trying to reinforce that where possible. I did try a few different door braces, but they were so visible I didn't like the environmental change the kids noticed, which was essentially like putting a "club" on the front/garage door. Windows - Each is covered by an open/close alarm sensor sensitive to ~2 inches. My son and I just tested that out a few days ago, which was kinda fun. We don't use the sliding glass door a whole lot so there's a dowel and security film on it. I was surprised how cheap that stuff is, $25 for a 24inx13ft roll. If I owned I'd have that professionally installed on all downstairs windows as it's a PITA to put on, but seems to be pretty good tech. Driveway/Vehicles - Can't really comment here, except I don't keep vehicles outside when possible. My neighborhood has a lot of petty theft, especially mailboxes and vehicles. I can't believe how often people leave their cars unlocked with stuff inside. Amazeballs. Weapons - Ear protection for home defense? I've never heard of that before, I'd think it would make it much more difficult to be on a 911 call, or communicating with family members, or hearing what's going on in the rest of the house. Is that a normal thing? As for the weapon, very similar. Beretta 1301 cruiser ready with 3 shells, extended tube, sling, some lighting goodies, laser, reflex red dot, in a Shot Vault mounted above my master bedroom closet door. It's got one full 6 shell saddle and I have a little chest thing that hangs next to it with another 15 or 20. I don't like storing the shotgun with a full tube because of the spring tension, but that's really debatable for sure. In the safe is also a glock 17 with some loaded mags *if* I had to actually get into the safe, which I wouldn't plan to. Yes, the shotgun is the one thing I've kinda tacticool'ed out on. They really are wicked fun, though. I've been thinking about putting the glock into a bio safe near the bed. The shotgun is still #1 goto, but at least it makes the pistol more accessible. No CCW, I'm in CA. House - I disagree significantly on defensive positions in the house. I've thought a lot about my specific environment and have made a plan, communicated and even practiced with the kids (like a fire drill). If an alarm goes off, we are booking it to our safe spot. If dad is screaming down the hallway "danger danger danger" at 3am, we aren't fighting, we're running to the bunker and calling 911, basically. I know where I have high ground, a fatal funnel, penetrating rounds are going through several interior walls then have 100 yards or so to the next house across a wide avenue, and finally a route out the window via a fire escape ladder. The way this house is laid out, if the door were solid to limit that entry, there's no other way in at all, not even close. I'm very confident we could hunker there while authorities arrive. Dog - Damn you. /kinda teary. See below, but can't happen currently but will as soon as possible. I do have a Bearded Dragon to defend, and he's super cool. Not very barky, though. Current and deteriorating conditions - The Rona and such, I've seen my neighborhood/town/neighboring towns deteriorate for sure. Constant mailbox and vehicle thieves of opportunity. Sure, that's not really a threat I guess, but the town's police log of shootings and robberies have gone up quite a bit. Within a year or two I'll likely have a new train station constructed almost next door to my neighborhood, and going by the closest stops on that train line, the stations are *not* beneficial to the locals. My town is next in line and has begun to get some nasty traffic already from a shift east, originating from Oakland and slowly working east over 30 or 40 years. My yard backs to a very busy avenue with fireworks and idiots doing dumb stuff all the time (not sideshow level thankfully), which attract opportunists. In general, for probably 200 bucks in random hardware stuff, it's been a positive experience. Like a little hobby, where I get to do super minor things (to this rental house anyway) that do make me feel better, contrary to the paranoia idea. Quote:
I wish, but can't while at this current rental. When I end up buying again I'll have another pooch for sure, and do miss feeling much more comfortable leaving some downstairs windows open at night. Used to have a female Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that was the best dog I've ever owned. She was alert and perimeter minded, if a little impossible to keep quiet at the doorbell, but not aggressive at all***8230;unless it was a gopher or large wingspan bird on the trails. Quite a sight that was, pulled a gopher once out of a trap, still sort of alive, kinda tossed it into the air and she snatched it and chomp chomp, gulp, gone. Woah. The Great Herons and Egrets on the trails would just short circuit her brain, tried a lot of training with those birds, no good. Best we had was to just let her run and swim after them. She'd swim and swim, find ducks, then another Egret, more swimming, while we just walked on the trail next to the creek. Miss that swamp dog smell sometimes, oof. Absolutely. There's a couple local places that do low light indoor classes that I'm interested in. The question was posed super generally, though, and doesn't have to do with firearms. This thread was just the only thing even remotely recent I could find. Last edited by jsmaze; 02-02-2021 at 03:15 AM. |

On the defensive positions, I did mention if you have a family to figure out a spot to move everyone towards. Quote:
Sounds like your HD is solid. You've got the best weapon, to me, as HD. The shottie has so many different loads, it's unlike anything else. They make all kinds of shells. EarPro. Mine are battery powered. I can still hear voices and such, so I can talk to anyone while using them. They are just made to suppress firearm noise. Look into them. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-...3173751&rt=rud You should do a course where you fire pistol, shotgun, and rifle indoors. Dude it's loud AF and will blow your hearing out, or your loved ones, we're talking permanent damage. My ears rang with foamies and my ear pro, doubled up. 556 and shotgun shells were loud AF! I've got a can I bought several years ago before the ATF changes so I have been procrastinating on the mounts as I intend to use it on 4 different firearms with the main one being my Scorpion. Once I get it on there I'm gong to retire or sell the Benelli. I have to park one vehicle in the driveway and soon enough it will be two as I am out of garage space, all my vehicles are packed in there. I have an app based car alarm so anything going on I get instant notification from anywhere in the world. My hood is alley fed and I built a carport in the back, and have 3 cameras back there. Alarm goes off I have live video, audio, a mic to use and a siren I can hit in addition to the car alarm. Pretty trick. Eventually I'll sell my property and build a barndo. I don't like parking stuff outside either but this is the way it is until I can build a 3000-4000 sq ft garage on some property. And the job market will probably keep me from doing so for 10+ years. Doors/windows, I had to replace them all due to age. So it wasn't much for me to do a little extra while the work was going. Beefing up security in these areas was actually very little cost. Steel door in front and will have one on the back soon as well. Better insulation and stronger than anything at the same price. Windows, if the frames are good and dual pane or better, they are a mf'er to get through. Cams, yeah I have a few more than I really need but hard to argue with "cost" on the hardware. I have my entire property covered, front yard, pool equipment, carport, alley, front street as it pertains to my property line and inside and outside of my garage where I've got $ invested in vehicles. it's setup so if I'm not at home a contractor is being recorded so no worries about foul play. The pool is always a liability risk. Some kids in the neighborhood figure out a way to scale the 10 ft fence and get in there and one of them drowns, I'm not going to be liable with locks, and video. I originally had a few less but my landscape guy who i pay once per year exposed a weak spot. He figured out the one place he could hide so I corrected that. Same for my pool equipment. I trust my guy that I pay 1-2 times a year to come out but now I have a cam right on all that expensive pool equipment. And you can longer hide anywhere. Sounds like you are renting. And from what i read you have a good setup for now. I wouldn't invest too much into anything I'm renting. Wait until you have your own property. I think you are g2g for now. |

Seriously, no way is that damn thing canned clearing rooms or hallways quickly. Would make a great lightsaber though. You’ve got the right idea with your setup above. My CZ is the same. With the foldable brace it fits in a small to medium sized laptop bag. I call it my buddy. I was taking my SBR and notifying when traveling but F the CZ is still legally a pistol and does the job with no phone call. |

i think the round itself is great, but most shotguns are a bit long and unwieldy. i also think people get the wrong impression on shot spread. even a 16" barrel is going to have a sub 6" spread at in home distances.
