for those of you in need of ammo, id suggest placing a backorder through opticsplanet. brass case 9mm is $0.30/rd and .223 wolf gold is $0.42/rd. not great but it's half the price of most places. they do a hold on your card for the full amount for a day or 2 then drop the hold and charge when the items ship. it might take 1-3 months or more, but i can't think of a better option in the near future. you can cancel the backorder at any time online.

Thanks for the tip. Local gunshow this weekend, I will go browse around without any expectations on good deals.

I really enjoyed the 6.5 Tikka, a LOT, basically all day Sunday. I left when the range closed at 4:45.

Sooo the next batch of ammo though, after shipping and the fees at the store, ~$1.8/round.

I mean, I'm only shooting a hundred a month maybe (~70 last weekend), so it's rapey, but not *too* rapey.

Divorced in 2017 so I could actually buy firearms, and I had to wait until THIS YEAR to actually get around to it.

As soon as supplies are back in stock, you should be able to hand-load for about $0.60 per round and have ammo that is better than what you can buy. Lapua brass can be reused at least 10x and a good press and scale and everything needed will run another $600 or so for good quality stuff. Roi comes pretty quick if you shoot more than occasionally.

agree'd, if you are shooting 100rnds a month, reloading will reduce the cost per round. note i didnt say save money, because starting into reloading is another hobby into itself where you need more and better equipment . LOL it is also an excuse to shoot more, as the rounds are cheaper.

Getting set up to reload is also great if you want to shoot things that aren't all that common as well.

That's why I need to buy 8mm mauser dies and throw some money at my friend who does hand loading for his deer rifles.

opticsplanet isn't amazon and a lot of people don't understand that and get pissed when they don't get their stuff in 2 days. they aren't the quickest, but they are the cheapest 99% of the time and i've never had an issue with them.

Glock gen 3 vs gen 4, specifically slide parts: what's the difference?

I'm assuming they are the same EXCEPT for guide rod/spring, extractor and rear cover plate. Firing pin assembly, safety plunger and extractor parts should be the same. Can anyone confirm?

To the best of my knowledge, the only differences in the slide are the recoil spring assembly and possibly front sight screw. Some night sights I've installed come with a Gen 4 specific screw with a shorter head. Think I have stock sights from both Gens around somewhere if confirmation is needed on that. All other parts should be the same.

Bought a couple M&P 15-22 10rd mags on eBay, for $25 each. Little plastic things. Geez. Sold out everywhere else, though. What a year.

Also broke the trigger guard on the little savage 22 rifle trying to use a bore snake. I had the stock on the edge of a table while dropping it down and slipped - so, guess it's better to use your legs or just put it barrel down on the floor. Gorilla super glue should do the trick, but ohhhh the cursing.

I hate the bore snakes, are they really that much better than patches?

I use bore snakes on my shotguns and as a quick maintenance cleaning on everything else to mostly prevent carbon rings in the throat/chamber. Patches and a good copper solvent are the only way to remove copper fouling from a barrel. I typically do a good copper cleaning once a year or when accuracy starts to degrade. A good quality barrel shouldn't need cleaning often at all and a little copper fouling actually helps accuracy.

In my experience bore snakes are ok for getting the big chunks out but they don't get stuff really clean. There's no substitute for a good cleaning rod and patches. They're better than nothing though.

Good info, thanks. I was expecting to do solvents more often, but the more I read the less it sounds like it's really necessary, like you said.

The snakes down the 22 bolt action rifle got it really clean, or so said the few patches I ran later. Still a PITA for the little caliber, maybe it's easier for a larger bore.

Also just put the patriot pin kit on my Ruger AR-556, but as the CA version, had a Hera CQR stock on it. The stock gets in the way of the pin mechanism, a LOT. Sooo, need a new stock I guess, hah. Might as well if I'm moving away from featureless anyway, no?

Ordered the Magpul STR, seemed like a pretty good combo of comfort, utility, brand, and price. $75 and in stock, yay.

Forgot grip: Magpul K2+. Fancy stuff, I know.

Also totally fubared (but didn't lose, I found it! hah) the buffer tube retainer spring after not getting the tube screwed back into just the right spot. The bolt chewed the spring up right good after test cycling it a couple times. Oops.

These AR-15s have entirely too many specialized tools, good lord.

GoDaddy kicked arfcom off their servers. How Brownells didn't have them on private servers is a mystery to me.

I stopped by a local gun show this weekend, total feeding frenzy. Primers were selling for $200/K. Insanity.

yup, things are nuts. every normal gun person is trying to stock up what they didnt already have, and now the socialist that think they need a gun are hoarding, because those who they helped elect might ban them.

Historically, things should be back to normal in a few months unless SHTF or Congress attempts to push through major gun laws. Maybe not in their best interest in the current climate, but we'll see. But seems the overall consensus is it'll be around mid 2021 before supply catches up with demand.

I've only been a firearm owner for a little over a year, but watching all this really makes me want to stock up if prices ever get back to what was considered normal. Most of the ammo I'm looking for is unavailable or 2-3x the prices a year ago. Walked into a Cabela's on the weekend and the ONLY ammo they had was 12 gauge.

it took a long time for things to get back to normal after sandy hook. it's much worse this time. if we ever get back to 2019 pricing, it's going to take 5+ years. i personally don't think we will ever see 2019 pricing again.

I went shooting yesterday only to test some mags. I felt bad spending the ammo to do it. I want to go shooting, but also want to hang on to the 1,500rds I have... and look for more 9mm.
