Default Video: what is this rattling when letting out the clutch?

Took the car twice to the dealer they say nothing is wrong but it just doesn't feel right.
I'm hearing the noises on the ground as well which is why I jacked up the car to try and figure it out. Abs and traction control off and letting out the clutch at a moderate speed. There is also a clunk when first letting out the clutch that sounds like it's in the area or the transmission or the driveshaft yolk in the firewall area. No suspension play or anything like that.

Any thoughts? This is a 2018 wrx 16k miles. Started hearing the noises about 5k mile ago but progressively getting worse. The clunk is also getting worse as well. Not sure if worn u joints make a rattling sound but there's no play on them that I can feel.

let us know if you figure it out..it sounds to me like slop in the drivetrain or maybe the clutch is loose or maybe the pitch stop mount broke, could be many things

I'm lost myself haha; definitely not pitch stop not mounts or anything like that. I understand some slop is normal but does this fall in the abnormal category especially since I never experienced this on the other car. I'm sure if it was common to be this loud I would see other threads but I don't. Definitely could be something loose on the clutch system but diagnosing it is hard. But definitely the noise clunk and rattle is between the firewall area to the radiator. Definitely not the rear I can confirm that 100%.

Also, I don't beat on this car. I barely do over 70 mph because the roads don't allow it.

Broken mounts? Bad half shafts or drive axles whatever you wanna call them. Does tranny have oil, is the history of car known?

Definitely not broken mounts or bad axles, trans oil is about 3/4 fill which I believe is how Subaru fills. I'm the first and only owner since new.
Believe me when I say I have tried everything lol. So now I'm turning to you guys. My diagnostic skills are pretty good for not being a mechanic but I'm lost on this one.

Gotta get the car on a lift. Definitely not safe doing that while on jackstands and being under the car lol. I did try this with a long screwdriver with the car off while rotating the wheels and I hear what I think is gear lash but hard to tell if in the center diff or the transmission itself.

I get a sound which seems to be coming from the middle/rear of the car. It only makes it on occasion when letting out the clutch in 1st gear from a stop. Other than that it never makes a peep. It sounds similar to hardwood floor creeking. Mines a 2016 WRX. I’m sure it’s just mechanical noise throughout the tranny

Just drivetrain slack. It's normal. Happens more often when the wheels off the ground without resistance.

I heard earlier WRX's have throw-out bearing issues. A creaking or grinding when clutch pedal is pressed down is the bearing going bad.

I’ve already had the throw out bearing replaced at 15k miles now at 30k. The noise seems to becoming from aft of the tranny on mine. I am not really concerned about it tho. Cars develop little noises here and there.

OK that does sound bad.. So when your clutch engages you get this crazy jerking sounds and it does look (by the video that the car jerks a bit)? So if you are on the WRX transmission which is cable driven, it could be play in your cables and its just dropping the clutch faster than you want.. hence jerking etc.. other sources of clutch failure can be caused by oil or contaminants getting in there (rear main seal etc..) and ofcourse it could be your clutch just saying bye bye (flywheel could be warped or worn badly..) could be lots of stuff but deff. clutch related.

This can be eliminated with a J-pipe and an R400, since you won't be hearing anything else over the exhaust.

Dealer told me twice nothing wrong with the car. Even after seeing the video the tech basically explained it as Jason said below that there's no resistance with the wheels on the ground so it will make that sound. But I'm also getting a loud clunk or thud letting the clutch out as well so there's something else going on. Originally I took it to the dealer complaining about a heavy vibration which feels lower down like the floor boards Infront of me in addition to the noise.

How does play in the cable occur?

All cables stretch, and other parts the cables are attached to can fail.. driving style also plays part.. before I swapped for the sti trans.. I was plagued with cable shifter issues, and slop, etc.. (once one cable completely failed and I got stuck with just forward and backwards movement (3rd and 4th.. fried my clutch trying to get home)..

If you have installed pitch stop, harder trans and motor mounts, you might feel a bit more, yet that is super loud.. really does sound like there is more too it than just drivetrain slop.. I'd say get it checked out if it keeps doing this.. go to a transmission specialty shop (not the dealer) they would know exactly what it is. I did build my own trans, engine, drivetrain, yet I'm not pro mechanic and have not personally had this noise, so I have nothing to compare it to. Best of luck

A loud clunk could also be from broken springs in the clutch so instead of a stronger torque transfer on contact, now it's compressing more before sending torque to the transmission.

Would this cause a wheel hop when letting out the clutch as well as a vibration low down in the car?

It's possible. The springs are supposed to dampen the vibration from the engine and drivetrain. If some of them are broken, only one is supporting the clutch, it can bottom out which then becomes a rigid connection that can make all kinds of weird sensation.

So just following up, I think I may have located the source of the noise. I randomly found a thread about brz and frs experiencing broken or worn clutch forks. Then I realized it's a wrx issue as well. Matter of fact there are companies that make beefier versions which made me realize it's something to have checked out.

You can see what looks like it could be some metal shavings mixed with grease. Sorry very difficult to get a clearer view but the rattling is exactly like my first video. I can't see if the clutch fork is broken but I see play at the pivot ball. I'm not an expert at this but I don't think I should be able to move my clutch fork like this with one finger. There's zero resistance but the rattle is there.

Subaru has a tsb for the throw out bearing which came out in 10/2018 and apparently they revised the clutch fork design mid 2018. My car was built early 2018 so more than likely has the older design which is why I'm having this issue. See video. Thoughts?
