Purchased with bad head gaskets, finished the replacement December/28th 2012. Engine looked very good for the mileage and the blow by was ever so slightly. Machined the heads well within manufacture spec and put it all back together. Replaced WP, TB, TB rollers and all seals/gaskets while I was at it. Cost ~$600 parts, $300 for renting a lift/shop space for 2 days. Should be good to go for the next 100k+ miles.

I've got a 92 with 315,000kms on it. The head gasket has no signs of leakage. (yet)
Lucky or the inevitable is about to happen?

Default Head gasket

I have a '98 wagon. 160k miles. No problem with head gasket. Unlikely to ever have one now. It was parked on street and a speeding 4x4 f150 with a texting driver took it out of commission.

Default Replaced about everything other than the head gaskets

97 Legacy L wagon
5 speed ( lost 4th and swapped in a my99-01 Impreza trans)
285,xxx- 50,000 mile discrepancy when I bought it in ‘18 ( so possibly 335,xxx)
No issues with head gaskets, so far.
Have replaced just about every other sensor, bushing, and even the ECU. But still runs great. Decent power, until I have 3 or 4 adults in it and need to climb hills in town.

Unless it was swapped at some point, your L has an EJ22. You will probably never need to worry about head gaskets.
