720p = holdover from console gaming bakc in the day; I realize that doesn't make sense for a computer these days. I'm looking for something in the <$200 range that won't require SLI. Speakers aren't necessary as I believe most monitors come with garbage speakers anyway; TVs are slightly better in this respect usually? A 32" TV is honestly too big for my space and I don't have a cable box in my room so it's not like I'm watching TV.
Currently considering the following: Samsung 22" 1080p slim LED TV http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN22F5000-22-Inch-1080p-60Hz/dp/B00BCGRX9M ASUS VS239H-P 23" IPS panel (marketing buzzwords!) without speakers, 1920x1080p http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236288

IPS is certainly not just a marketing buzzword. It produces better (in almost all cases) color representation at the expense of response time.
Buy the highest rated 24" 1080p monitor you can afford on Newegg. IPS = should be better color TN = faster response and probably cheaper |

I bought a QNIX 2710 2560*1440 monitor off EBay. Shipped from Seoul the next day and had it here in San Diego in 2 days. Paid like $330 shipped I think. Zero dead pixels and only a bit of backlight bleed. Bang for the buck is awesome...
If your card(s) can handle a 1440 resolution, definitely go that way. The clarity is amazing. |

He's running a single 770? 1440p is just out of reach, IMHO... |

Single 760 actually.
The ASUS looks really good - interestingly, there is also this model of Dell UltraSharp I'm looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-U2312HM-IPS-Monitor/dp/B005LN1JEC/ That's rated at 8ms, however take a look at this review: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm |

Definitely not 1440p on a 760 doing any modern gaming.

The thing to remember with buying a TV is that a TV is a TV, not a monitor. They are not automatically going to display the same.
Leave out all the issues with how fuzzy text will look at even just 1080p on a 32" or larger TV(to me, it's readable, but would drive me insane if I had to use it daily even just for email), there's over scan and other issues to deal with. Every TV is different in how it handles displaying your desktop on the screen. These specs are not typically easy found on any basic description and it'll vary from model to model and possibly even within models(the switch out panels and various internal components regularly during production of a specific model, because as long as it meets the specs that were quoted, it's still delivering what they promised to the customer, even if one version supports 1:1 pixel mapping, the other may not). I know plenty of people who have done it. The only ones I know who still do it are usually using the TV as a secondary monitor just for gaming or watching movies. They all now have at least 1 or 2 regular monitors for daily computer usage. |

To be fair, it's actually two workstations that I've stuffed together to make one. Surveillance open on 3 monitors, other stuff open on 1. Usually.

Question(s): I built a gaming rig about 6-7 years ago (ancient!).
Would I need to get a different motherboard to get it to run i7/i5 chips? Am I just screwed and have to build from scratch minus the case? Goal is to build a mid-range gaming rig. |

a wee bit late, but you can take a look at yore event viewer to see if it's a software issue causing the locks/crashes.

Good Morning.
My father's computer is on it's way out (built it for him over 5 years ago). He wants me to build him a new one but I feel out of the loop. I quickly pieced one together in the hopes of receiving some feedback. If anyone would be so kind as to recommend alternatives to my choices or verify if it was any good. He is not a gamer. He wants a fast computer with a "nice big monitor." Of course, I would like to get the price of this build down a bit if possible. Any chance that anyone knows of a place to get learned on how to optimize graphics /video performance? I have some good hardware but the end result seems less than I expected.

The SSD is so his operating system boots faster. We have a plethera of old HDD to store media on. I might pick up a giant one later on and transfer everything to that so its in one place (and not delete the smaller HDD). I thought about 8GB of ram. I might have to reconsider it. If I bought 8 more down the road for him, I just have to make sure it's the same brand/type, right? |

Is he going to know to use the SSD for only applications and the HDD for everything else? |
