Interesting. Well that pretty much evaporates most of the theoretical $60/month of savings.

Cheeky monkeys. Hrmm. Spend $37 to save $60, inferior broadband.

Figured this was as good a thread as any to drop this bombshell:

Quote:
NBC is getting out of the sports network business.
First reported by Sports Business Journal, NBC is planning to shut down the NBC Sports Network by the end of 2021. NBCSN serves as the sports home for NBC programming and regularly broadcasts NHL and English Premier League games along with NASCAR races and college basketball games.
Sounds like NBC is dropping NHL altogether when their contract expires at the end of this season and everything else is heading to Peacock.

Outside of the Olympics and UCI pro cycling, I barely watch but that's a big chunk of my TV time in the Spring/Summer

I finally got around to canceling AT&T TV Now, due to another price increase ($75/month). With the spotty servers and interface issues, it was time to go. I think they’re going to phase out eventually. They are no longer taking new subscribers according to their last email.

Not sure how this offer is directed, but YTTV is giving out free Chromecasts.

I suspect it's targeted at Roku owners who have YTTV because of their ongoing pissing match, but that's just my speculation.

Might ya have a link? Google search only showed last years offer, and I just started a new YTTV sub to watch EURO cup.

Not that it was cable related but I'm finally once again free of TWC (Spectrum)!

It was a fitting end that Windstream was able to get a technician out to set the house up for Gig faster than TWC was able to get a tech out to figure out why our internet has been out for the last 24+ hours

I recently changed ISP's (from 100Mbps/5TB cap to 1Gbps fiber with no caps), but retained my original TV contract. But at around $180/month for really just basic cable and an "expanded," channel lineup with no HBO/cinemax or the like nor sports packages, finally am looking at YTTV or similar.

It seemed to me a few months back, that YTTV was pretty much the top streaming service to use for what's equivalent to what I have now, Is that still the case now?

It was until they raised their prices.
There are plenty of options, depending on what you need/want.

I am using Sling, which has two options - Blue and Orange. I am very happy with the one I have. The only thing missing, especially now, during the Euro, is ESPN.

It depends on what you want, where you live, and what device you have. I can't get my locals on Sling here in PHX so I went with the now defunct Playstation TV and now YTTV. Some apps won't work on some devices or require some bit of hacking to get them to be functional.

No local channels with Sling right? As for pricing, I'm paying $180/mo now.. It's not going to cost more. ;-)

I'm a roku house, so I'm good. It seems I can launch YTTV from the YT app.

Depends on your region.
I was always able to get NBC and couple of others.

As of recently, I think there is a way to get all the locals with Sling.

For the local channels , are you guys in range of their satellite dishes to use an antenna placed on your roof? This is what I did , one time purchase fee.

For me, no antenna.
NBC is included in the Chicago market.

Okay, I'm finally there.

With networks moving more shows solely to their stream platforms, and Comcast moving channels from regular cable to be only available via their streaming cable box, I recently griped to the wife about wondering why we even still have cable TV at this point.

So she picked up a Firestick 4k for $20 on a good deal she saw.

I've got Chromecasts, and looked at a Roku at other people's houses before. But never really spent enough couch time to get acquainted.

Got the Firestick setup, added a couple of our existing subscriptions, a few more free services, and pulled up their guide. I already decided there was more live content I'd watch at that point than on cable.

Got Kodi loaded, and probably going to set up Mame on it this weekend.

About the last thing I miss is the DVR features. I've got a Synology NAS I could use, or I can plug in one of many old drives into my router for a dedicated DVR.

What do you guys recommend?

I'm not planning to subscribe to any of the pay streaming services with cloud DVR.

What TV app you using? The Android Live TV app?
What other free TV apps you got? I use Pluto, and that covers my tv watching.

You could also get a HDHomerun and set up the Live TV app to use it, works wonderfully.

The problem I see with old spin drives is they will be on all of the time. I would rather get a cheap SSD drive and plug it to the router or NAS and use that. Use the NAS for storage? Sure. You might have to try it out to see if the NAS wakes up on time for recording. My 4 bay Synology takes a few seconds to wake up, and this might screw up with the scheduler for recording.

Plex DVR integrates nicely with HD Homerun. HDDs shouldn't have any problem with sleeping/waking for recordings.

Kodi has a plugin to pull in games from the internet archives.
Its not the prettiest interface, but it works.

Wish emulation station with retroarcade worked in Android. I do have it on my Pi and works great.

Launchbox is available on Android. 100 game free limit that's worth checking out.

I guess it's the built-in Live TV app on Firestick? Not the Kodi Live TV.

Pluto definitely seems to have the most channels. I also have added IMDB, Plex, and Tubi.

I've got a 500GB external drive that was plugged into my TiVo for years. It's made to hold up to years of constant DVR use. I'd love to dust that off, plug it into my router, and get some DVR functionality out of it.

But it's not clear to me how to do that if it's even possible. I'd love to be able to look thru the Live TV guide and schedule things to record later.

I'd even settle for just have a running 30min buffer of Live TV so I can pause it. Again, not sure if that is feasible.

If you're able to use Plex, then you can do this. But only for the channels you get from Plex. Not for Tubi and all that other stuff.
