Wow.

Expect that this will be the situation at other huge resorts/towns.

Not surprising. It is totaly possible that local/state governments will shut down resorts as things become worse.

There have been more and more outbreaks at local ski hills among workers having parties / hanging out outside of work. Which is what ski workers do after work. Not surprising. But if that industry wants to stay open and people want to remain employed I guess things need to change. They need Tom Cruise to kick some ass.

Those kind of trips are exactly what cause those types of restrictions.

I'd go ahead and cancel if I were you. This might come off as harsh, but you obviously don't have any interest in being responsible and our numbers are going to get worse after Christmas/New Years. Several ski resorts are already canceling daily reservations. So you aren't even going to be guaranteed the ability to ski. That or you can come out, ignore our rules, feed the wildlife, complain nothing is open, sit around a hotel room, and have an absolute miserable trip compared to coming out next season. Your call.

Jeez guys, you've totally changed my mind! Thank you so much Internet randos! I'll get right on that cancellation and promise not to post pics to this thread while I'm not out there!

Those bastards! Trying to be safe and not spread a deadly virus. WTH are they thinking?!

I have friends that live near Winter Park. I love WP. But I won't be skiing this year

That incident and the Silverton incident had me kind of sad yesterday. I’m hoping it’s not a trend for the rest of the season.

At least in my area the warm and dry weather has caused some serious facets. So I expect it to be fairly unstable for a while.

On a happier note, my park skis should arrive today. Then I just need to take them down to get mounted. I’m planning on getting them mounted with pivots. I know I like them and apparently the Attacks don’t have quite as smooth or a release. I figure having binding I know I like and have any extra chance of sparing an injury is worth the cost difference.

Didn’t the snow pack start off really bad with dry granular & powdery under a hard layer? I think it’s not a good start based on what I’ve seen/heard.

Depends on location. I did hear and read some CAIC reports that called out the very early snow as a failure layer. I haven’t been digging a lot of pits since I’ve been taking it over the top mellow, so I’m not a great source for firsthand info.

I saw a video from crested butte area on youtube a week ago basically saying that until we got 2+ feet of good snow the risk was extreme most places. I am just scratching the surface of understanding this and I know it can vary a lot by location but the takeaway I had was the early season snows didn't get the year off to a great start.

I should finish reading Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain so I learn more.

Reading the book was very helpful.

Taking the AST 1 course was even more helpful.

With the 2 feet of snow we got last night the whole area (Canadian Rockies) are showing considerable risk in all regions (alpine, tree line and below tree line).

We have had 3 feet of snow in four days and will be looking for LOW risk terrain tomorrow

Put in my first day since Covid cut the lsat season off.
Went to Cannon Mtn in NH, limited/reserved tickets.

Was pretty good, post holiday weekday place was quiet. They'd also gotten a batch of 12" natual snow since the weekend so was also mostly best conditions they'd had this year, and the sun came out.

relieved to finally get out again.

Went up to Steamboat for the first time this past weekend. My sister has been living up there for the winter and it was my only free weekend before she comes back down.

What a weekend to go up there. It snowed Friday and Saturday morning. The maintain under reported it to try and keep traffic down but everyone heard how much they got and it was busy. All the COVID protocols were in place but a lot of people didn’t listen. I hope the other resorts don’t have the same issue.

That said, what a ****ing day! Best tree runs in Colorado I’ve experienced. Not dense with great powder. Get creative with your lines and your not in anything like the backside of Keystone.

A few picks as you can see it was snowing in the morning. A storm came in real quick later in the day so we called it. I’ve really missed boarding this year

I can second Tweeder's experience - just got back from a week at Steamboat and also enjoyed some pretty good snow. Wasn't too busy or inconvenient regarding masks (just used my neck warmer). Hope you dudes can get out there and enjoy some nature! I'm glad I did!

We had another avalanche fatality off of the Park City ridgeline on Squaretop on the 31st (second of the season). If you see the slope in the summer, there's no way you would ski it in the winter.

The snow sucks, too many faceted layers

Default Snowboard-n-Ski time!

Heading up to Copper tomorrow since I’ve got the day off. Just bought a ticket vs using my Ikon. I don’t think I’ll end up with enough days to make it worth using - wife is unlikely to want to go at all with the kids this year. I can/will probably do a little resort potpourri with my days if I go more - maybe hit up the places that aren’t ikon like Loveland, Wolf, etc.

I actually was planning on Copper tomorrow! but am going to hang around with the kids instead since the wife felt a bit under the weather tonight.

Skied Copper today. Day 15 on the season. Two short clips here:

Twitter

Most of the day it was really flat light, unlike the chosen clips. I made my way across the whole front side, more or less, but didn't find anything super compelling so called it a day at 14k vert.

I got Copper booked for tomorrow. Looking like they should get a few inches of fresh snow tonight.

Anyone ride the back bowl yet this season?

I've been trying to figure out the algorithm for Vail's reservation system. Is the limit 150% of parking lot capacity, 150% of lift capacity, or they shut off reservations when their servers crash?

My local hill has never had lines as long or the parking lot consistently so full, and I've heard similar stories at Wildcat and Mt. Snow. All the Covid protocols feel more like post 9/11 airline security corrals than actually trying to promote physical distancing.

It's great for my small holding in MTN, but crappy for enjoying the slopes.
