That's what I've heard as well. I had a chance to pick one up cheap- a dealer by my house had a 280zx turbo for sale but it was in ROUGH shape (and it was an automatic) so I declined.

OP, avoid the automatic, you'll regret it. That seems like a lot of money for that as well. I'm not sure though based on your location. I know around here they're not so easy to find for cheap just like every other classic car. Too much rusted up junk here.
IF it's primered gray and a stick, that's my old car

In green bay? I kinda doubt it. I think the guy said it took him 3 years to get all the parts together for it but just doesn't have the time for it.
My brother bought a '99 RS from this guy and he had a built fairlady Z (240z?) in the garage and told me he'll sell me his other project he never got around to.
I'm not really sure though. I haven't talked to the guy in weeks. I'm debating it yet. Even the engine is in pieces.

I sold one to a guy in WI, the interior was shot and need all kinds of work, exterior was good, would make a good race car.

Just the opposite, the best selling Z of all time was the 280ZX, and a fair number of those were turbos.

Hm, shows how much I know about Nissans. I thought they were some kind of coveted engine or something.

$6000 seems a bit high for that, unless it's straight and has no rust.

Where in the South East are we talking? It's certainly not AZ or CA desert, so I'd be afraid of rust.

I've always wanted a 240 or 260 so bad, but could never find one in decent shape My SVX was a hard-to-come-by-treasure for sure, but I would consider selling it for a mint early model (pre-280) Z-car...

This made me cream my pants, though:

^ that is beautiful.

BTW, I'm pretty sure the 280z is better across the board than the 260z- IIRC there were some fairly serious flaws with the 260z.

I want to know: WTF happened with the ZX?
I love the styling of the 240/260/280z, but the 280ZX is so friggin ugly IMO. It's like they hit a 280z with an ugly stick. A lot.

You've wanted an LS1 in a Z since you were 10? How old are you?

OP and anyone else interested: I've got a restored 71 240Z that I'm looking to sell. PM for more info.

I'm in Central Alabama. I noticed it had a vintage registry license plate from Mississippi on the front bumper...so it could be from anywhere.

The posters in this thread are right, I love the way it looks, but don't think i'd be truly happy with an automatic.

Mostly i'm just dreaming. I'd like a cool older car...maybe even one to replace my daily driver and it's hefty monthly payment.

The LS1 was introduced in 1997, so if he's 21 it's possible!

in truth the auto's in S30 cars truly suck. And I like almost all Z's. The power loss must be close to 30% and the gear ratio is horrible.

AH! yeah sorry, I get my Z's mixed up, I liked the early Z's before the 300z of the 80's. I'm not really a fan of that thing. And yes, the 280ZX is an ugly bitch, the roofline ruins everything. I got mixed up and also thought that all 280z's looked like the ZX afterwards, now that it's cleared up I love every Z before the 280ZX
