I’m looking at just spinning up a server for image hosting. I'm not interested in going through this ever again.

I want something as easy as imgur to use without further worry of this happening again in the future. Because we haven't had a single recommend image host through all these years that hasn't eventually ended up at the same dead end destination.

This one in particular looks pretty promising:
https://chevereto.com/

However, I would have to limit the hot-linking to only within NASIOC. Otherwise we'd end up destroying our available bandwidth.

that's the host that Reflex used for his lordofthegif.com image hosting. I tried it out once several years ago as a lark. Seemed to work well enough.

I'm a member of multiple subreddits that are expressly for selling items. Everyone uses imgur. This is some stupid ****.

Yar. That was the backbone of my image hosting terrorism, porn and limousine site. It's a decent hosting platform, but the server itself was slow as balls. The gallery took forever to load.

I did like its search feature, though.

Also rip imgur. Had a good run, no? 4-5 years maybe? Seemed like Imageshack remained free for maybe ~2 years. Tinypic 1.

I agree, this is gonna be a problem.

The hotlinked avatars for Matt and r0bman (and I had one at one point) are so incredibly tiny and rare that it'd be hilarious if that was the "reason." Like... a few KB of data, it's nothing. But fair enough, easy to fix.

But the classifieds are a violation? Oof.

I'd be fine with making users post an Album and just link to it, so that Imgur gets their pound of flesh on advertisements from the new tab opening. But it's insanely hard to stop everyone out there from posting hotlinks to stuff they want to sell... it's gonna happen.

A) Good idea

B) Doesn't fix the fact that we have a million images uploaded and hotlinked to imgur already. They were the chosen one, we thought the golden age would last forever.

Sadly, I think Matt's was particularly troublesome because it wasn't just an image from Imgur, it was clickable to go to his card store... so double whammy and I'm sure if anyone from Imgur saw it, they were gonna smash that ban hammer. They are insignificant as far as cost for Imgur, I agree, but if you're gonna punch Imgur in the nose by violating the TOS... that was about the most sure way to accomplish that. It was also likely pretty easy to spot them if they have an algo to detect stuff like this since it would have loaded multiple times per page, not just once, or maybe twice for a hot-linked image and potential after quoting. From the detection standpoint, it would look a lot more purposeful than accidental. It is what it is, though.

My feeling at this stage is the classifieds are their larger sticking point. Especially since I've gotten no further reply since my last. I simply asked if we could get the rest of the site reinstated if we removed all imgur ads and future ability to post them from all classifieds sections. *crickets*

I agree completely... this classifieds decision on their part seems short-sighted. They could have almost just as easily started tapping users to pony up if they want to hot-link classifieds images. Seems like a much more sound business model than directly screwing over a bunch of people who had nothing to do with classifieds images. Surefire way to lose a lot of customers and ad revenue by holding 100% responsible for maybe 10% (likely not even remotely that high) of the violating content.

The loss of the data access pisses me off, and if I could just make it work again, it would have already. I'm still going to see if I can block it in just the classifieds and submit another request. Even though it's almost certainly going to be ice skating uphill. It's also hard to have much faith in imgur from this point forward... or really any image host going forward.

You should start writing an app for folks to grab their imgur content to post it back up to whatever solution I end up using. You'd be the hero of OT! I can create a rewrite that could live time redirect all imgur URL calls to whatever URL we need. IE. https://TedsSuperAwesomeApp.com?URL=imgurlink.jpg

Any idea why it was so slow? I guess the worst case is we spin it up, and see how she runs. It can't be much worse than what's happening at the current moment. I'm just getting tired of the 'ol "pull the rug out from under everyone" hosting choices these companies make.

If I can find something simpler, cleaner and faster I'd use that. It's only real purpose will be simple easy upload and sharing. The rest of the stuff is really not necessary for our direct hot-linking needs, but the bell and whistles are usually nice features to have.

NASIOC traffic is a drop in the bucket compared to what imgur sees daily.

If we spin up our own image hosting site, it isn't going to break the bank on data usage. Especially if you put limits on file size and use a CDN.

Really it's a basic AWS hosting service with a few features added on. It'll cost a couple bucks a month to run, but I bet you could do it for NASIOC reasonably at about $100.

As far as I know, imgur would have no idea that Matt's avatar was also a link to his store.

All they know is an HTTP Get request from an IMG tag comes across, same as any other hotlinked picture on a thread.

However: they'd keep getting GET requests for years for the same image from the same domain, which would indicate that we "used" it as a site asset.

A normal hotlink that we post in a thread and gets seen for a few days will die off as the thread moves on or people stop reading that page. That's normal usage for sites like imgur: rogue posts a meme, a few hundred people see it for a few days, then it kind of fades away.

To be clear, individual images hotlinked from that service seemed to load just fine. It was the site itself that was slow. Gallery navigation could be a chore at times. If I had to guess, it was their display formatting slowing things down for me. The gallery loads pretty much everything, animation and all, with responsive sizing. It was havoc on mobile devices, and only marginally better on PC.

Perhaps there were optimization features I was unaware of. It was my first and only foray into running a site, so I'm no expert.

I wish my site was still live for you to demo.

Let's take a step back.

It's insanity to suggest that NASIOC users can no longer use imgur going forward. 1) Like Ted said, there are tons of images already embedded and/or linked to, so all of that **** would break, and 2) to tell all of the users that they can no longer use the most popular image sharing site on the internet would surely result in a mass exodus. It simply doesn't make sense.

Imgur needs to clarify this part:

Quote:
Please also be aware, that any forum that has a section dedicated to selling, such as classified are also against the advertising portion of the TOS.
That's got to be every forum on the web. Do they mean that if it's making YOU (Nick) money that it's not allowed? THAT would make sense, as it's a well-known thing among 'imgurians' (ewwwwww) that you can't post for-sale **** directly on imgur's homepage. But if WrxLovr69 wants to sell his turbo-shaped buttplug via a classified listing to SickRevsBruh, I don't see how their tos could disallow that. It's just another hosted image, and it doesn't make NASIOC a dime. It's not like you're selling t-shirts on here and using imgur.com/nasioctshirt.jpg to do so.
