I *think* imgur is generally smart enough that they will automatically redirect any incoming referred click (not hotlink) to their site such that it shows the ads and surround of the picture, even if you came in with the .jpg direct link. This has always been the behavior I observed.

A SECOND attempt to come direct for the same image from the same browser would often give you a DIFFERENT result: a direct link just to that one file, with no ads/surround.

Basically, they run their own rewrite on the server to take most incoming requests and route them to a page that might show you an ad. But it's hard to prove with the new NASIOC rewrite in place.
Their rewrites aren't that smart. I was playing around to get it correct, and unless it's the full i.imgur.com/blahblah.gif it will not load. Meaning, when I would update to the primary URL to imgur.com/blahblah.gif it throws a 404, only imgur.com/blahblah works properly. There is also some play with adding "gallery" between the domain and the "filename" portion. That all said though, even this behavior wasn't stable. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not. This was on direct hits, not clicks inside NASIOC (no referral interference). I'm starting to wonder if they have their network segmented in some manner where the storage of say different extensions is on different parts. That's the only armchair explanation I have for why it seems very random in response.

I assumed like you that their redirects should be able to manage whatever I'd throw at them, I was very wrong. You are welcome to play around with the URLs and update me. But the behavior I was seeing was difficult to nail down and seemed to indicate some inconsistencies with their network. Or it's that I was staring at PHP code and RegEx statements too long and my brain quit and wanted stable access without any question. (Although, it could also be I have such a bad sinus infection that my teeth and upper jaw feel as though I tried to eat ball bearings) I'd rather make it definitely work for everyone than worry too much about fringe use cases. Going forward we can worry about fringe and refining things.

Either way, we can't link straight to the i.imgur.com domain to hotlink, or restore hover, unless they are willing to unblock us.

My instinct here is that there is going to be some major change with them in the coming weeks. All this stuff with Reddit can't be coincidental. I'm also assuming we aren't like the only large forum hit with this "new restriction on classifieds" it's just not all public yet.

That's the plan. That will be tonight's experiment.

Today was all about "stopping the bleeding." Tonight/tomorrow is about getting a server up and running.

Part of the reason for my "nobody is free hosting any longer" question is now I need to be more focused on restricting access. Although immediately I'm only going to allow hot-linking from within NASIOC. So for most people, it will be useless, BUT enterprising individuals (not site members) may still use it for album storage. So adding a way to tie it to vbulletin user accounts may be necessary.

There is still flickr, but unless you pay for Pro account ( as you said), it is limited to 1,000 pics. Not sure what size pics.

Google photos will let you link as I leaned yesterday (Thanks, Kai!) but not without jumping thru some loops. Whether or not the mage will remain linked forever, I don't know.

^ Flickr is for people managing and selling photos and art more than a storage place for dickbutt. In fact, you can't upload anything that is not your intellectual property there.

Then a human may have gone to NASIOC and poked around to see what we're about, and a decision was made to hit the button.

That's it. No need for fancy neural nets or Artificial Intelligence. No need to go digging in to the ephemeral question of what we use imgur FOR... just see that we have a lot of traffic we're sending across their servers, and we're a business with vendors and classifieds. Done. Nuke it from orbit.

This matches up with the limited information we have from them so far.

Occam's razor and so forth.
Neural nets aren't fancy, and I figured someone supplied one as a product, which is why I ask for information on what people ACTUALLY do, not what they CAN do based on the data. You can make one to recognize a handwritten character from scratch in an afternoon. SQL Server has built-in deep learning using R. It is more simple to manage an ANN that it is to manage the experts about which you spoke.

But I appreciate your guess.

Sorry, you #triggered me when you mentioned machine learning/neural nets.

The Army asks us about that every time we sneeze. They want to machine learn all the things!

I have to keep explaining: it's GREAT if you have one simple problem that's repeated a million times. It's TERRIBLE if you have a thousand different problems.

Machine learning is super if this is a task that you could train a thousand five-year-olds to do with enough time.

I don't see a particular need to AI the "who's boosting our service for their own site?" detection. A little multiplication and an order-by would get you there.

So imgur divorces from reddit.
Imgur cracks down on hotlinks etc.
Imgur also does :

Quote:
As of Oct 2019, Imgur will no longer display NSFW Imgur r/subsections associated with Reddit subreddits.

No Imgur content has been deleted or moved, and is still available at its original Imgur URL. As an alternative, you can browse the visual contents of any subreddit using third-party tools such as https://www.redditery.com and https://redditgrid.com.
Are they Public yet?

No. Private.

They got an addl $20 million in funding a few months back: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...300874849.html

EDIT:
Quote:
This investment comes at a time of a significant momentum for Imgur, which has just celebrated its 10th consecutive year of growth - including the highest-grossing year to date for its advertising division. The Imgur-Coil partnership represents an opportunity for the company to generate additional revenue and give users a better experience, while also continuing to develop and scale its growing advertising business.
Seems ready to go public. I'd post a reaction gif here, but, you know...

I've been interested in building one that uses two types of ANNs to detect insurance claim fraud.

They'll never shut that down, like they did with reader.

...and plus.

...and wave, health, iGoogle, hangouts, and Orkut.

Anything you upload to myspace or friendster may not be available in the future. Facebook is free because you are the product.

My comcast personal site for images from the early 2000's seems to have silently died.

The only thing that lives is a web server I pay for that I stopped updating in 2007 because linkedin and facebook (but still use for email and other stuff), and I feel bad.
