It might sell like hotcakes.

But every owner better back it into parking spaces to save us all from seeing that rear end.

Agreed. I like the tail lights, I like the trunk, I like the wide body, but that plastic diffuser/bumper sticking out a good 3" is horrible. For me, that is the worst part of the whole car.

Yes, it's ugly as Sin and it ain't gonna change. Easier to accept that and go buy a different car.

Because the Elantra N is such a beautiful design, the Golf R’s design strikes “aggressive sexiness” as soon as you look at it, and the Type R is an elegant sleek looking vehicle.

I mean looks are subjective. And I agree about the Elantra N. But I'd hardly call the Golf ugly. And then I'd still take the boyracer Civic over the WRX--not to mention I expect the upcoming Type R to look better.

But if we are going to mention FWD competition, we may as well mentions the autos. I think the Stinger and Mazda3 are just good looking--especially by comparison.

And I expect the Corolla to easily outdo the WRX unless they completely screw it up.

But yeah "the competition is ugly too" doesn't really up the WRX's position.

The current Mazda 3 lineup lost it's multi-link rear suspension in favor of "Torsion beam". Yeah, no thank you. I would take the Si, or CTR if I was shopping the higher $$$ point.

Corolla GR over the WRX, only if it comes will all the Yaris GR tricky diffs.

A good number of people seem to be shopping the WRX as a quick daily. I'd take the Mazda3 in that context any day over the WRX and then get a Miata or BRZ for the weekends.

I don't really think there is a perfect fun do everything car. Maybe the new Golf R. I'd rather have a GR Yaris. But if you are looking for cheap fun in the US it seems better to just get a sports car and a boring sedan or crossover.

Personally I have a 99 civic that works fine as a daily. I don't know why I'd trade it in for a WRX when I could just keep it and get a weekend specific car instead.

But I guess we live in the age of the coupe crossover, and I should just accept consumers today prefer a compromised experience with a big touch screen.

Not what I said. I’ve also argued against those that have justified the lack of power with “the competition hasn’t improved and it’s a good starting point for mods”. But okay..

Has anybody noticed that the jdm videos of the wrx have both powered driver and passenger seats where as the usdm videos only show a powered driver seat? Is this something that was also different on the VA chassis WRX or are we just getting shafted?

It's likely a cost cutting measure. JDM WRX put more emphasis on daily comfort and safety. The base trim comes with push start & keyless access, power seats for both, and all the eyesight features. It's also roughly ~$35k converted, whereas the USDM WRX is likely to start 30k base.

The Smoking Tire video of the wrx also notes that the driver is powered but the passenger is manual in their car. It was on the limited trim as well I believe.

Here’s to hoping that all the goodies are saved for the sti. Was listening to their podcast today (the smoking tire) and they were debating why Subaru would only offer the adjustable suspension with the cvt, and then it clicked for them that they are probably saving the best performance options for the STI.

I think the new Golf R is the same IIRC.

Which makes sense, but then why offer it on the WRX at all? Or why not have a manual in the GT trim? The STI should still have better brakes, overall suspension, transmission, engine, aero.

Do you think it has more to do with cost cutting or is Subaru worried about cannibalization?

You're not wrong; but, putting Golf R and CTR aside for a moment (because of cost/price), I think the Elantra N has a better engine, better trannies, much better brake package.
It has a more appealing wheel and tire package; most likely better performing.
Better infotainment situation and better stereo.
All of this makes it easier to accept the way it looks, IMO.
If I wanted another affordable sporty sedan to drop kids off, go to work and do a couple of track days or some AX, I'd have a hard time passing on the Elantra.

I would definitely think cannibalism of the models. TST made a good point that if the Gt came in a manual why would people buy the sti if they could tune the wrx and make the same power since they will likely have the same engine. It’s not the best of reasons but makes sense. It’s also marketing I guess, if someone doesn’t want the “boy racer” look and big wing, then go with the wrx gt. If you want max performance then get the sti, I think they are aiming for a fundamental difference to capitalize on a larger market share.

cost cutting, no doubt. Americans seem appalled when all this added technology means increased car prices, and are only willing to pay those prices for "premium" brands.

When I had my R, people were all upset that VW didn't include the memory seats, and other things that were present on the euro versions, but then you look at the cost of the euro version and it was like a 55k car in USD, people just wouldn't buy it, so they have to remove features to bring the price down.

Agreed, however it would be absolutely useless this time of the year and the wheels and tires wouldn't last a month on our roads. That performance comes at a significant price if this is your daily and only car. It is an absolute deal breaker for me at least, hence as much I love the N and the CTR they wouldn't be very practical for me to own without significant changes to the wheel and tire package which would negatively impact the stock performance. I threw a good set of AS tires on my WRX and that car handled like a rabbit on cleats all year round. This is why AWD has such a huge advantage for me, the handling and ability to put that power down is second to none at this price point. The brakes are perfectly fine, it just needs better pads. They are certainly not as grabby as the R brakes on my GLI but I never had any complaints, outside of the pads cooking too quickly. Hopefully the VA OEM performance pads can fit right in. Cheap and easy fix.

There is no perfect car but the WRX is as good as it gets at this price level for a do it all performance car.

My post was aimed more at people that keep referring to this new WRX as an abhorrent abomination and the most horrible looking vehicle human eyes have set eyes on. Like, we get it, it’s kind of funky looking (which Subaru hasn’t been?). Yet, if it wasn’t for the cladding and really more so the rear bumper, we all agree it’s actually a good looking design. So with that in mind that was basically my point.
