307 WRC Vid
I know it isn't to do with the Scoob, but this video is pretty cool none the less. I found it when looking through the Peugeot Sport website and thought I would share it with you:

Nice video. That car is growing on me. Still looks a bit odd. Actually it makes me think of the old Ford RS200 Grp.B car. Let's see what happens next year... Davis |

Classic case of marketing issues
The team did not want to use the convertable version of the 307 for the WRC car but that was forced on them by the Marketing people! They had a lot of issues getting it a) strong enough and b) light enough |

Cool... wish they went into a little more detail rather then just a teaser video, but I guess you can't ask for much this early in development.
Here is a direct link to the RAM file: http://www.peugeot-avenue.com/mediat...ideos/1_hd.ram But you still have to save that and then stream it from the below link, I just don't know how to save or direct link to/from that protocol. By saving at least the one above, you can watch it in the normal player and doublesize it, though. rtsp://a98.v6339c.c6339.e.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/98/6339/3f4377b8/psa.download.akamai.com/6339/ZC/pav/video/307WRC/307wrc_hd.rm |

From what I've heard the hatchback version was too top heavy, and no one really wanted to use it. The sports director wanted to stick with the 206 (or perhaps an unannounced 207) but the marketing people wanted the new 307 (in any body style) to be pushed hard. The comprimise was the 307CC. |

The 307 is quite tall.. very spaceous and nice for passengers, but far from desirable in a racing car.
I am fairly sure they chose the 307 CC as it was the best car available for it. I am a bit surprised though, didn't think they were allowed to rebuild convertibles into hardtop cars. |

The top may be made of metal, but it has no supporting parts of it. That it is metal or fabric makes little difference in this case. I guess the roll cage takes care of that.
If you roll a hardtop convertible, the roof will still come caving in completely on you. |

Also if they let you weld in sheetmetal to replace a sun roof I sure the same reasoning lets them weld the covertable hardtop in place so it wouldn't be any different than a regular sedan/coupe. It might even be stiffer if the CC version has a stiffened body/frame to make up for the covertable top.

My understanding from several sources was that the team engineers first choice was the hatchback version just like the 206 currently is.
For the same weight a complete shell is lighter and stronger than one without a roof. No If's And's or Buts! They were specifically overridden by the marketing people and forced to use the convertable body That forced them to a) deal with the issue of the rules not allowing that under WRC, b) deal with fixing the body to get it as rigid as it would be with the other shell and c) do it in such a way so to not make it too heavy or adversely affect the CG in doing so I remember a specific comment in one of the articles about the minimum weight changes in WRC gave them some relief but that it was still a push as to whether they could get the car with the extra parts needed down to that level..... |

Why? It makes no sense at all. The manufacturers often try to push for a look that most resembles their big seller cars, as this puts the best image on the most essential cars in their lineup. The 307CC sells nothing versus the 307 hatch.
And on top of that, making a less competitive car? That makes no sense. |

bear in mind a 307 shell only weighs 307Kg and there is a 320Kg minimum weight for any WRC car body shell, so the weight penalty for the CC body isnt an issue. In fact the added rigidity inbuilt into the CC floorpan may be of technical benefit to the cars performance. The final built up car sits bang on the 1230Kg minimum weight with Balast added.
The CC has aerodynamic advantages too, it is lower than a saloon equivilent so has a smaller frontal area, giving a better drag coeficient. |
