2022 Golf Thread - Sticks, Balls and Towels to wipe them with
It's 2020... what are your plans?
Mine? Play more than last year, and get those 4 stokes I lost in my index, back. --kC Last edited by KC; 12-27-2021 at 07:42 AM. |

My goal should be attainable...not get t-boned by a woman blowing through a red light and lose 2+ months of my season due to pain/concussion/rehab (like 2019).
I have no idea what's going on with the stupid new world handicap system being implemented by the USGA. I read up on it/researched it, and it's just a hot mess that's being hastily pushed out in a half-finished fashion for whatever reason. I will not be using it, and will have to figure out the best way to track my scores. |

This is a good article https://www.golfdigest.com/story/voi...tem-dean-knuth On a lighter/more fun note, my buddy gave me his old TaylorMade RBZ Tour 4 hybrid to replace my broken Cobra one, and I love it, but I'm thinking of picking up the matching 3 hybrid to better fit the gap between my 3 wood and 4 iron. They're cheap! |

AM Tournaments, are you thinking multi-day? There's an allowance to not adjust the hdcps every day, but go with the start. But, and a big but, if they do allow a daily adjustment, it's going to be a shot across the bow to the Sandbaggers that "never shot like this before!" Yeah? Well, your cap is going down tomorrow! Have a great golf trip coming up ... staying a week at Casa de Campo in the Dominican. A week of playing golf every day at Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore and the Links (Teeth of the Dog is supposed to be something special ... one of the Top 50 in the world).
Been really working on my swing the last couple of weeks and I think something finally clicked. My woods are still a little inconsistent (though my driver seems to be fine), but my 7 iron down to my 60 are feeling as good as they ever have. I'm really looking forward to getting out and playing again. It will be the first time in a long time that I've had a caddie ... I don't want to look like a duffer in front of a stranger. I'm used to my friends laughing at my game ... it's a whole other level when I have to tip a stranger not to laugh at me. |

My goal is to be better off the tee with my driver. I started my lessons on the driver last night and hope to correct what is wrong with my swing in 2020. I don't need to crush it, I would just like to hit it more consistently.
Oh, and breaking 90 is on my list of goals but I know that's a matter of time. I think I will be mid-low 80s by the end of the year if I can keep practicing and playing over the winter in conjunction with my lessons. Last edited by johnnyb; 01-08-2020 at 06:12 PM. |

Playing this Sunday as it's supposed to be warm.
I need to figure out my lesson / training plan for the year as I want to keep improving. I struggled to break 90 for most of the summer before finishing with that great round of 79. My woods and hybrid are pretty decent but I'm really struggling with my iron striking. Wife and I are considering a trip to Pinehurst in October. |

I'm a bit burnt out at the moment (year round golf season can do that... not that I'm complaining). So IDK what my 2020 plans are yet.
2019 was the least amount of rounds I have played in a year in probably a decade (I think I played 40 or so). I played some good golf and some bad golf. It was a year of inconsistency. I got down to 3.0 index at some point and generally stayed between 3 and 5. 5 is kind of my 'normal' so it was a solid year overall. I had a few golf trips where I stacked a bunch of rounds together but then would go weeks in between rounds... it made it hard to have a real feel and grasp of my game. In 2020 I hope to play more which should allow me to be more consistent. So I will go with that. And breaking par on 18... I want to do that again... maybe a round in the 60's? |

I am likely going to take a few lessons this spring, at least 2-3 and plan to practice more than I have in the past. No new equipment this year, just improve, practice and play more. Also be less hard on myself on course and get out of my own negative thoughts.
My goal is to break 80 again and more than once. I am hoping to play this weekend if the rain isn't awful. |

I should finally be good on equipment this year too, other than wedges. I would kind of like to do a wedge fitting since I play a lot and they wear out. I'll try to hit the fitting carts when they come to my club in the spring.

I did a wedge fitting a while ago, but I knew going in that I wanted the low/lowest-bounce option and was mainly just gap testing (and a little bit of shaft testing). That being said I've now had them reshafted multiple times and am on shaft #3 on each (KBS 610; which I have no plans on changing).
I'd say gap testing is by far the most important part of the wedge fitting puzzle |

I did a wedge fitting a couple of years ago (it was tacked on to my iron fitting) at a very high end, all encompassing shop. A place where they fit college teams, mini tour players, and many other people who are far more talented than I. Their approach was basically 'hey we have virtually every wedge and combo you can buy... take a few fistfuls of them and see what works and feels good to you... then we will work on reigning in the gaps and making smaller tweaks'.... Very different than the iron fitting which 90% based on pure data. For wedges I like to have a mix of grinds and bounce. I carry a 58*, 54* and a 50*. My 58* has really low bounce. I use like it for very firm conditions... whether it's bone dry summer conditions, hard pan, crusty bunkers... that's where it shines.. my 54* is more versatile.. It's a mid bounce option that's kind of good at everything... I use it in normal or wet conditions, normal or fluffy bunkers... My 50* is more a fuller swing club (1/2 swing and more) so that's high bounce due to my digging nature on full swings. Moving to this model (which I did a couple of years ago) has really helped me with options in different conditions. I kind of have a wedge, even if the loft isn't perfect, for every lie situation. |

Taking my FIL to get fitted for iron shafts this weekend and then he can order his new irons. While he's doing that, I know what I want and will be ordering my new irons.

I just ordered new wedges from my buddy at Callaway this morning ironically. Jaws MD5 tour grey 50*/10* S grind and 56*/12* W grind w/KBS C-Tapers.
Coming from a 52* and 58* but have dropped my 50* A wedge that matches my set. This should fill in the gaps down low and I added a 3i to fill the gap between my 4i and 2i hybrid. It's tinkering time! Edit: Just checked my new handicap and it went down like .6 with the new rating. |

Doh. Posted this in old thread.
I had my iron fitting yesterday and while I know "it's the archer, not the arrow", the Ping i210s w/Dynamic Gold shafts went 10 yards further and straighter than anything else I hit. Pretty sure it was the performance loft but they felt so easy to swing and that was with standard (I use midsize) grips. I'll keep an eye out for used ones but they're going to be hard to find since I am lefty and it's a custom set. To make it tougher, I'm getting married this year, but it's better to beg for forgiveness than ask permission right? After the fitting, I played 18 holes and the problem shots were with my driver and wood. I had a few good tee shots but my irons and short game got me to a 94 which felt OK. I was of course hitting drives straight on the range Saturday, but could not keep it straight as the round went on. I probably tightened up from the practice/fitting and should have been more aware of that. I'm going to keep it on the executive courses for a while until I can rely more on my longer clubs. My next lesson will again be driver focused but I really need a better feel for the driver. |

finally have another full round set up for this coming Sunday. Hoping to play at my buddy's club, otherwise will find another local course.
played the par 3 pitch & putt last Thursday after work, managed to go 10 over for 18. was -1 through holes 1-6. +4 on front 9, +6 on back 9. A little better than average for me. |

Let's do it. I have some wedding planning stuff and work stuff coming, but would love to play San Clemente again since it's cheap and pretty forgiving from the tees. I should be able to make it happen.
When I played Encinitas Ranch on Sunday, we teed off at 12:45 and finished at dusk. So either early or afternoon works for me. |

I've been playing my small local 6-hole Par 3 course 4-5 times a week for a good 6 months now. Today it was super windy, so I brought out the new Cobra King Forged 2/3 Utility iron for some punch shots. The greens are so soft and grabby, I could do these gently 130-150yd zingers and they would hit, bounce froward, and just grab and slow down.
Yesterday in non windy conditions I went about 30 yards behind the tee box on hole #3, and hit half a dozen full shots with it. I'm carrying about 200 yards, but they landed on the green and just stuck. I'm hoping during regular conditions and on a fairway, they would roll out 20-25yards. Might be a great mid-summer club for when it is really dry and the balls roll forever. It's the first driving/utility iron I've had, as I usually hit my TM M1 Hybrid for those types of distances. But Santa needed a list, and I thought it would be fun to learn something different. |

I agree. I think that it will also have a potential to raise handicaps in some instances because the max score on some holes will be higher instead of the standard double bogey.

Sandbaggers will figure out the ways to game this new system, too But you're right, the article was biased, but on the other hand it did bring up a few good points.
We'll see...I haven't signed up for my 2020 Ghin yet. I really only play with my brother and then a small assortment of friends and that's it. I figure my handicap will stick around the 6-10 mark, as usual. |
