Default 2007 legacy engine into a 2005 legacy. Direct swap?

Hey all I have an 05 subaru legacy 2.5i and the motor has rod knock.
I'm at the junk yard right now and they have an engine from an 07 legacy 2.5i.
Both cars are automatic. Are there any modifications needed? Wiring? Or is a direct swap.
Thanks in advance.

it will work, although the later model has variable valve lift while your 05 doesn't (I believe). you can switch the intake manifold from the old engine to the new, but you won't be able to utilize the VVL due to no connections and the fact that your ECU can't run. Regardless, switching the manifolds will insure that all you electrical connections will plug in and also insure your PCV system will plug in too.

If its as easy as just swapping the intake manifold and not having avls I can live with. But I also heard I have to keep the crank pulley and cam gears from the 05. Some say you dont have to. A lot of conflicting info out there.

I decided not to go with the junk yard choice for now.
That leaves me with getting a new short block from subaru and putting on my heads along with an array of new parts (oil pump, water pump, tensioner, belt, gasket kit, etc) or get a motor that has been rebuilt already (not from jasper )

How do I know if my engine is a federal, california or canada emissions?
Just curious since all the 05's I've seen at the junk yards didn't have the coil packs on top of the intake manifold and mines does.

How did this swap go?

I think your OB must be part of the earlier production run. My 2005 produced in 11/2004 has the coil pack in the same location as yours.
