Been a quiet spring so far with the RA. Just enjoying the hell out of the new power, and feverishly trying to find 2008+ Twin Scroll Headers for the VF58 swap over the winter.

This past weekend I took the new setup for its first track day at Pocono. My buddy in his 425whp STi Hatch came along to try out his setup as well.

Typical NEPA Pocono Autocross is more of a high speed track sprint which I absolutely love compared to the parking lot events. You definitely get your money worth at these events. Lots of high speed sweepers and many slaloms.

Brought along my girlfriend's father and gave him some seat time.

Funny Enough hot lapping the car with 2 drivers on such a high speed course the car did quite well. The only issue I had was the power steering reservoir puked a bit. I do have the level a tad high, but that fluid got hot as hell with all the slaloms. I have the Spec C return cooler, but may need to upgrade to the Group N unit that mounts in the front.

Did the RA come with any of the JDM draw stiffeners? Saw one article mention it did but was under the impression the only thing different suspension/steering wise from the base 19+ STI were the bilsteins and some beefier brackets/tie rod ends on the steering rack.

Trying to make my 21 STI a quasi-RA. Awesome build by the way!

Nope, the RA didn't get anything like that from the factory. At the very least they could have done the Extended Subframe Bolts and Strut Bar lol.

Your 21 is basically an RA where it matters minus the Carbon Roof. The RA Bilsteins are good, but unless you find a stupid good deal, and im talking like $500 for a set, look for coilovers if you are after performance. The S209 Bilstiens is what's holding my RA back on track. However, I use my car as an OEM fanboy mountain cruiser and occasional track duty so the tradeoff is fine.

Been a quiet year so far with the RA. Been driving it and enjoying the incredible Stage 3 Setup. Still looking for the V10 Twin Scroll Header for the Vf58 I plan to install in the Spring.

But, today this showed up from Japan.

This is the new rear draw stiffener for the Levorg STi and the new chassi. The theory from Subaru is that there are many sheet metal panels that are spot welded together back there that have flex. This draw stiffener preloads these different panels and keeps them from flexing.

The JDM/EDM does not have the rear crash beam like the USDM models do. Our cars have that rear brace for crashes 5mph and below. So I assume that it offers nothing in the way of chassi rigidity. The JDM Type RA-R from 2018 I know for sure didn't have one as well.

I plan to adapt this to the VA chassi. I know of one other person who has this stiffener yet has not taken the bumper off to see what fitment is like. I assume the bolt holes wont line up, but nothing a simple aluminum plate on each side cant fix. I am curious if there is a difference. People who have installed this on their Levorgs state the difference is noticeable when there is a quick change in direction. This holds up to what I experienced with all the other stiffeners on the RA. Should be a fun project

I don't get it... Why drop $50k for the upgrades and not drive it? I mean he took a BIG loss for what?

$97,008 ($50,878 for the car if he didn't pay markup + $46,130 in new engine/mods) to not even drive it 800 miles... #mindblown

Look at Bill being nice and posting in the comment for the new owner of that RA to get it retuned for where he's located. Go Bill

I have seen this car in person as it was local here in NJ when I was looking for mine. From what I remember it was a show build and some parts were sponsored. It gets attention and people talking. When the RA came it all the fanboys were aghast someone would mod a $50,000 STi when you could have bought a base model and done the same.

Modifying cars makes no sense when it comes to builds like that. For that money you could buy XXX. But that's the fun part about cars. We are all just kids with adult money that can build or buy whatever our automotive dreams are.

I enjoy the building process, hunt for rare OEM parts, researching old forums, and meeting fellow enthusiasts who share my love for OEM+. To me that's more fun than going an buying a M4 and just driving it for the same cost of my RA build.

But let's be real. I think if $100k was in our hands and we had to choose between building the ultimate Subaru, or buying a GT3.....we all know the correct choice.

I was convinced that the Levorg STi Draw Stiffener would need some modification to bolt onto the VA chassi. The only other VA owner who has one told me he also thought it would need modification, however he had not had time to test fit it.

So I was able to climb under the car and slip one of the brackets under the bumper and up to the crash beam. To my shock the holes were close. Damn close. I thought, no way....leave it to Subaru. I was convinced it would bolt on.

So, today I set to work.

Bumper Removed. I suggest taking the time to run painters tape along all the edges so nothing gets scratched.

I mocked everything up and it fits OEM! The brackets have two possible mounting locations. Only the outer holes can be used which is what the instructions call for. This can be mounted with or without the rear crash beam. The rear beam is a USDM only piece, and the JDM cars dont have anything back there. So I removed the 18lb beam to see if it made any difference as well.

I also took the time to polish the STI Performance Mufflers

Went for a long spirited drive and here are my impressions.

Does it work? Yes. Subaru, claims this preloads the rear body and it absorbs more road vibrations, cracks, and bumps. They also claim in makes the rear and front of the car move together during quick changes of directions instead of the rear following the front. It does exactly that. Just like the front draw stiffeners, when you turn the wheel it turns instantly. The precision is insane. The ride quality was the biggest surprise. Bumps that used to make you cringe if you hit them were now almost gone.

I thought it was placebo, but Lexus uses these from the factory on their F-Sport models for a more luxury ride quality with their stiffer suspension their customers want. So they do work.

Overall, its not night and day like a swaybar upgrade is. But with most of Subaru's OEM performance parts they are all packaged together to create a setup that is greater than the sum of their parts. Individually they wont wow you, but together it creates a car that gives you confidence.

Stock weight was 3,395.

- 10lbs from the front bumper beam supports and RA-R washer bottle
- 18lbs rear crash beam
- 10lbs exhaust

But I added the S209 Intercooler Sprayer and Draw Stiffeners So its probably around stock weight.

I think if you could easily get this car down to around 3250lbs without going crazy on interior. I think unsprung weight would transform the car.

RA-R wheels - 25lbs
RA-R Brembo 2 Piece rotors - 15lbs
STi Performance Lightweight Flywheel and Clutch - 5lbs
Carbon Fiber Driveshaft - 10lbs

Sticking with the OEM+ theme and removing 50lbs+ of unsprung weight would instantly change the character of the car.

It's definitely not a cheap path to upgrading the STi. Each time I install a part from the STi Catalog I was underwhelmed, honestly. But, I'm not sure exactly when it was I went for a spirited drive up in the mountains away from NJ. I remember thinking, WOAH, this is different. The precision was amazing, yet compliant over bumps.

It's not without flaws. I still personally feel like there is to much body roll and could corner flatter. But I think only coilovers could get me there.

Still, it's always a treat to drive knowing this is technology that's quickly becoming Vintage.

Thank you for the write-up on that rear draw stiffener. Very informative about the effect it has. You also answered another question I was thinking about as to whether it could be installed in conjunction with the OEM bumper beam (that we also have on Canadian cars...)

Yep it sure can be done. If I daily'd the car it would have stayed. I bet in the future you will see STi offer one of these for the front as well. COX/Yamaha offer Dampers for the STi. Even Subaru had the special edition TC380 that came standard with the Yamaha front and rear dampers.

Grats on the new pieces man, I just went balls out on an S208 lip - brand new in box and I'll be feeling that for a minute.

I remember that car, I think it was tied to a shop with a questionable rep and yeah, that had to be a tough pill to swallow.

To me, I couldn't do that to a numbered car, might as well have bought a base STi and gone nuts. Oh well, grats to the new owner!

Have you considered the RA-R suspension setup? It's OEM, lower, and proved to be quite solid. If I go with suspension, it'll be Syms Racing, or perhaps RA-R suspension on RA-R wheels, seems to be my goal - for now at least!

From my understanding the RA-R suspension isn't anything special. The struts aren't even Bilsteins or the Dampmatic II. They appear to just be Pink Springs as well. The best OEM option is the Bilstien Coilovers offered for the S4 as a factory option, however even those aren't very adjustable.

The S209 setup is great, but again the body roll is just a bit more than I'd like but no means is it bad. Ohlins would be amazing.
