Bringing this thread back to life...
Adios motorbike! https://img.nasioc.com/image/wj83E See you in Seattle (hopefully)! Packed up the bike last week and hopefully it's ready to go. Test ride showed a few little naggy bits like really low air pressure (fixed, but tires are really old), a case that rattles and my little spotlights crapped out, but loaded it up and shipped it off this weekend. Will have to source chocolate bars locally (for S'mores en route) and evaluate the wearing/packing of gear for my flights. On track to make to to Seattle in time, but we shall see... Relatedly, Aprilia reps said that there will be a loaner/demo suit available for me at Barber, so all appears to be in good shape. I'm terrified, but it looks like this is going to happen!

In MotoGP news, Morbidelli moves up to the factory team effective immediately and Dovi will be riding the SRT Petronas Yamaha for the rest of the year and into 2022. I'm a Dovi fan so I'm looking forward to seeing how he does.

Not what I wanted to post in here but I need to get it out somewhere. My father in law was hit on his bike last night. Pickup with a lawn trailer pulled out in front of him at ~45 mph. Ohio law only requires eye covering and he didn’t have a helmet on. I disagree with the practice and always wear a helmet, but even if its common sense it’s not required in Ohio. Apparently he landed on the trailer which is what made things not quite as worse. Rushed to the hospital and had convulsions on the way, intubated last night but now it seems as though he’s getting better. Failed a breathing test this morning but he also has breathing/esophagus problems so it could be that as well, and passed another breathing test recently. Still sedated in case of delayed hemorrhaging, but somehow no broken bones, needed some staples in his head but just some rash on his knee and other bumps/bruises. Still waiting to see on brain scans but things are looking up.
Both my wife and I enjoyed my bikes previously but it really has been getting worse, I’ve mentioned it in here before but I told her after I sold my Triumph that when I buy another one next year it’s going to be track only so no more Street riding with the two of us. She was okay with that and more so now. I just really wish people would look twice. |

That really is sad. I hope your fil recovers fully and if he gets back on a bike that he learns from his mistake. I spent a long day on the big bike last weekend. Public roads make me nervous and I ride paranoid all the time. Most of this was up north on small back roads. This is why I like riding off-road/dual sport. Most of the areas I ride are devoid of ppl. Deer and the occasional SXS are my dangers... other than myself making a mistake. I've had 2 flats recently on the KTM. I'm done with tubes!!! Nitro Mousses showed up yesterday. No more tire irons, hand pumps, co2 cartridges etc etc. I also splurged and bought a Rabaconda 3 minute tire changer. Changing tires with mousses almost look easier and quicker than dealing with sensitive tubes. |

People don't look... and they don't care. Its sad, but I'd wager that 80% of the people driving would rather be doing other things (50% are doing other things) so just don't put any thought into it. |

@TMSmith Any update on the FIL?
On a personal note, getting ready for my great motorcycle extravaganza starting next week. Shipping company seems confident that the GS will be delivered to Seattle in time for my Canada to Mexico trip. If anybody has any suggestions for great stops/places to eat along the way, I'm all ears. Here's my route: https://goo.gl/maps/jqTdT1UpUMgQYqrk7 Not sure about border crossing in either direction, need to do more digging to see what's required. Before that, heading to the Aprilia day at Barber. No video recording while on the demo bikes, but they're supposed to have a photographer there. Hopeful to throw my leg over a few of the bikes they bring (at least hoping for a ride on an RS660 given that that's what prompted the sign up). Been a long while since I've been on a track, fingers crossed for disaster avoidance. Certainly feel like I've forgotten to pack something, or I'm otherwise not ready, but it's just about too late. Wish me luck! |

He was discharged yesterday. Somehow he got incredibly lucky, no fractures, just some staples in the head and no large head trauma. Read the police report as it came out today, looks like the guy he hit stopped at a cross stop sign, didn’t look and just went.
He will likely be in pain for a while but it seems like overall he’s made it out alright. |

My suggestion is to not ride I-5 at all (through Seattle/Tacoma -> Olympia). I'd take Whidbey Island and the Coupeville-Port Townsend ferry (motorcycles generally don't need reservations, but look for cancellations due to tides, and plan to hit the Kingston Ferry instead), then ride 101 North around the peninsula. If you have time (and the sky is clear), head up to Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic NP. If you want to do all of 101, you can start in Olympia and go all the way around the Peninsula.. some of the best riding is that Eastern section between Skokomish and Quilcene along the Hood Canal. Oyster Saloon at Hama Hama is a must-do if you're into oysters and on that route. There's basically nothing to eat and only like 3 gas stations between Forks and Aberdeen except for a few National Park Lodges: Kalaloch Lodge (take-out only) and Quinault Lodge (25% capacity dining + take-out), so plan food accordingly. There's a decent general store in Forks, but the restaurants aren't exactly gems. Your current route (which I'm assuming is just the default route between Vancouver & Hoh Oxbow) has you doubling over that area to camp at the Hoh. I assume you're also planning to head up to the Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center.. so that's a fairly remote 4hr trip and the bit between Qeets and Aberdeen is pretty boring with nothing to see most days of the year (cultivated pine forests and fog/low clouds). Quote:
On that note, you're going to want to bring your vaccination card because entry to restaurants varies by county all along the West Coast. Coupeville, Port Townsend, Port Angeles are all worth straying off the path to ride through their downtown areas and find a place to eat. Sequim has a few good restaurants, but the whole place is a huge time suck and will likely remind you too much of Florida retirement communities. Neah Bay (Northwestern-most point of Contiguous 48) is closed for covid.. it's a remote native rez, and they don't want tourists. Bummer, because that's a great ride out there. |

I'd also tell you to take it down into the Malibu canyons and have some fun there, as its supposed to be some of the best riding in these parts. I live in SD, so if you need any pointers for food, or even a place to crash, or work on the bike shoot me a PM. There is A LOT of good food around here. Quote:

I'd even recommend going 101S -> 1/PCH -> 10E -> 5S. This way you can ride through Malibu which will never disappoint. Hard not to stop at Neptunes Net as well (although they got rid of their moto parking which sucks). There is weekend traffic going north but south is usually ok. The canyons are a bit tough since the snake is closed to motor vehicles right now. You can grab Mulholland Highway from PCH but it doesn't go all the way through. As a quick detour, perhaps you can take Mulholland Hwy to Kanan Rd. and Kanan Rd. back to PCH if you really want to hit the canyons. |

So of course I passed on the Nighthawk. Since then I have become enamored on the Royal Enfield 650 twins. They bring back sooooo many memories of my Gr650XR and 60s British bikes, all at a really reasonable price point and a great warranty. From what I have read they are much better since moving them back to be built in England.

Cycle World tested one, Peter Egan seemed to like it but mentioned the kind of things that would put me off them. (stuff breaking, not idling? Sounded kinda third-world.)

RE is making a big push in American Flat Track and doing quite well.
Johnny Lewis has actually won a main event on one in the production twins class which btw is very competitive with factory involvement by Yamaha and H-D. I have finally made the switch to mousses. I've been riding rocks a bit more sporty lately and obviously getting flats. No more!!!! UP 2 weekends ago. Heading back up Thursday. |

Good eye.
Close. The first pic was taken in this exact spot. https://goo.gl/maps/PNpYx7AygCGPn9gr9 Second was a few miles east of Grand Marais in the school forest. Third was the east branch of the Two Hearted river just south west of the 2 hearted campground. Below was a few weeks ago on W. Wildat Rd just a few miles west of WFP. Made it back from my trip alive. No major disasters. Still going through all my pictures and videos, I'll share anything good. Thanks to all the advice
@CalamityJesus: The ferry was a great suggestion. The route that I shared was basically the default, so I took the ferry across and then rode west. No space at Hoh Oxbow, so I overnighted at Hoh Rainforest instead. I appreciate the suggestion for Hurricane Ridge, that was really cool! ...not too much like that in Central Florida (that's a theme for this trip). @Spaze and SoobZero: The advice about Southern California was spot on. East Beach tacos was great! I could do Santa Barbara long term for sure! Neptune's Net was a nice stop before hitting the canyons of Malibu. Was disappointed that Mulholland was closed, but just picked a few random canyons to ride. Just ridiculous! Great views on fun roads. ...damn shame that's not in the budget for retirement! Other quick notes/comments: - Aprilia Day was fun but DIDN'T get to demo the RS660, because of the damn rain! I may just have to try and buy the damn thing without so much as throwing a leg over. But, Barber is cool. Riding in a monsoon, less so. Got a few strange looks on the Scrambler, but what the hell. Got some cool shots in the rain. - Haulbikes (motorcycle shipper) did good enough for me for the price. Would recommend. - Everywhere from the Oregon coast on down would work for me as a place to retire. ...just about everything was pretty. Except for the cold, rainy, no visibility day. ...and that western part of Washington state you can keep, but Bellingham up to the border was terrific, too! Larrabee state park, yo! - Heading to Vegas from the border is anxiety inducing. Passed a sign saying 100 miles to next services out in the desert. Was counting miles vs. range the whole damn way. - Y'all have some damn expensive gas! Highest was $6.249/gallon, but at least those folks in that little town helped me fix my bike (busted mirror from an oopsie) - Each of the parks was fantastic. Favorite may be Redwoods! Sounds kinda cheesy, but feels good to be a part of the earth like that. Completely different environment. - Joshua Tree (at least my campground at Indian Cove) is from another planet Thanks again for all the suggestions! You guys helped out a ton, I appreciate it. |
