Default 2019 WRX and STi get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto... BUT

Hello everyone,

So I noticed the 2019 WRX and STi will receive Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I wish the 2016 to 2018s would receive an update to access CarPlay but Subaru is definitely going to be using this as a selling point. However, I was doing research and I found that the Mustang did something similar where the 2017+ got CarPlay but the 2016 got shafted... but if you upgraded the USB hub, CarPlay magically worked. (This does work, we did it for my buddy’s mustang)

I was wondering what you guys think? Will Subaru change actual hardware in the head unit to enable it in the 2019s only? Or will there be something dumb like changing the USB hub and upgrading software to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the 2016-2018s?

I like the stock look of the head unit and this is something I would like to research much more.

Reference video that it worked for the Mustang

I sure hope there isn't anything this easy to make it work. I just bought all the goodies to rip out my stock stereo and put something in with CarPlay in my 18 :-p

I have the the 17 sti with hk system (makes any upgrading a pita) so I just bought a 10" tablet and stuck it over the oem unit. Waze, Google, garage door apps, etc..... I too hope it's a simple upgrade.

We just bought a 18 imprezza hatch and it came with Android auto. Pretty nice, and, waze is working great.

I'm willing to guarantee this type of thing won't be possible. Based on photos of the interface and screen, the hardware and starlink software in the 2019 head unit is pretty much what's in the Outback... which is different from the 2015-2018 WRX/STI. Don't bet on Subaru providing that new starlink software as a firmware update -- would be nice though

I purchased the 2018 WRX Limited for the hopes that Subaru will make it an option to upgrade the firmware in the future with the 7" infotainment system.

I honestly don't even mind paying the dealer to upgrade the firmware and reflash it! It seems like this might just be a buying point for Subaru to fetch in people.

Maybe it will be possible to swap the 2019 unit into the past years.

Yeah, anybody know if this will be possible? Especially for a 2018 with HK.

Hopefully... we'll find out in a few months I'm sure.

No one knows since the 2019 parts aren't up yet, but I hope it will be a direct swap too. The HK system is more complicated to upgrade to aftermarket HUs so an easy path to CarPlay/AA would be great.

Anyone that works at a dealership seeing a part number for the 2019 headunit with nav+HK yet? I know it's early, but I noticed on Subaru's parts site that some 2019 audio system diagrams/parts are showing up under 2018, but not the actual headunit(?). I'm just wondering if the dealership database is the same as the parts site, or if it's more up-to-date.

My issue with Android Auto is that the ones which work by requiring a USB connection to the phone (just this year they're starting to come out with aftermarket HUs that can connect to Android 8.0 phones and better via wi-fi) do NOT supply enough current. Most phones out there these days require about 2.1A or more to properly charge (3.0A or more for rapid charging). AA headunits provide at most about 1.5A for charging through the USB cable. That means your phone will be discharging AND charging at the same time if you have a smart phone bought in the last 2 years or so.

Going to have to go aftermarket, for example, if you're using a Google Pixel, or be willing to splice a 12V car charger into the power lines for the AA HU's USB cable.

https://parts.subaru.com/Subaru_2018_STI-STI-Limited-25L-TURBO-6MT/Electrical.html -- The available headunits, labeled as Audio Parts (Radio) Body, show as being applicable to '16MY- while the system overall, labeled as Audio Parts (Radio) System, has two separate diagrams labeled as '16MY-'18MY and '19MY- respectively.

Going off of that evidence, I'm concluding that the 2019s will have a slightly different system but will use the same headunit as 2016+ cars. Hopefully Subaru will release a firmware update for at least 2016-2018 cars.

The difference between the two systems diagrams is that the 19MY diagram has the telematics unit showing while the 16-18 doesn’t. Up here in Canada we don’t get the Starlink telematics so whatever HU we get should be slightly less complicated and I’m asssuming it will be a little easier to do a swap because of that. Assuming is the key... hopefully.

The actual radio body diagram doesn’t really show what year is 19 specific. Just 2 units that cost the same, but for some reason have different part numbers. Again, I’m assuming the ‘19 unit isn’t being shown there... I guess we’ll have to wait until the actual 2019 section shows up on the site.

It’s highly unlikely Subaru would have a firmware update for older units to update to the new starlink.

I emailed SOA last month and was told it's not possible to update the 2018 head unit to Apple CarPlay. I bought my WRX in April. Wish I had waited a few more months. I just assumed that since other Subaru's had CarPlay that they were never going to put it in the WRX. The same thing happened when I bought my 2015 Mustang. The next years model had CarPlay as a usb upgrade option for I believe $50 at the dealer. I hate the thought of spending money on a new head unit just for CarPlay, since I just paid $35000 for the car. And I'm going in for $1,500 for ceramic coating next month.

has anyone got a 19 yet that has it??? id be interested to see the back side of it. It looks from what i found to be the same "sized" radio so it could be possible to do. I wonder if it has more communication though than the 18

I'm don't mind the look of the new 2019 radio, but what phd12v said it would be interesting to see if the 2019 radio works for a 2018. I would like to have android auto.

I'm betting there won't be as many people wanting to swap out the 2019 unit compared to previous years, since most people just want CP/AA out of an aftermarket unit.

Fingers crossed... especially for the HK unit for me! I keep checking the subaru parts site for the 2019 category, but so far its not up yet.

I honestly think it will be the same situation as the mustang where with light modification you'll be able to make it work in the older versions.

I really don't think it will be like that. You'll need a software upgrade and Subaru won't be providing that. A head unit swap is what will be needed... 99.9% sure.

if the radio needs CAN data or any kind of vehicle data to work, i can bet your correct. As the 18 and down dont have any type of networking to the factory radio. Thats why i said i would love to see the back of one and then be able to get ahold of the schematics to see what is going where. IF (and thats a big IF) it could be swapped out and usable, i would think of ditching my aftermarket for it. Silly as it sounds it is not out of the question.....

FWIW, I messed with the stereo in a 2019 STi, and I hated it. I was coming from a Kenwood DNX574S and the AA interface looked like trash.

Pretty much the same starlink software is in my ‘17 Impreza and it’s fine with me...but I use CarPlay.

I imagine the resolution in the Kenwood units is higher. The oem unit was heavy on the aliasing and it distorted the interface.

It's obviously a matter of perspective, but I was genuinely surprised at how bad it was in comparison.
