Default 3.0 [H6] models beyond 150,000 miles?

We have a 2006 Outback 3.0R. I purchased this model because the sun roof on the LL Bean version decreased available headroom. We added leather seats from Katzkin.

It currently has 154,000 miles on it. Maintenance problems thus far have been minimal: one rear hub and a radiator. A recent oil analysis showed the engine to be in excellent shape. The transmission (which I've never liked) still works the way it did when new. I drive 30-40,000 miles a year, including Boston city traffic. This model is an ideal size for us, and better in snow than my WRX. This year had the aluminum hood and tailgate.

Just curious if anyone has driven one 200,000 miles or more?

I have nothing to add, other than your experience makes me happy. I just bought an 08 Outback LL Bean 3.0 last weekend with 58K. So far I love it. You are right however, about the 5EAT. What a lazy trans that thing is. I hope to have great luck with it, but so far it's world's more refined than my 08 FSXT.

There's someone on SubaruPutback.org with 410,000 miles on a 3.0. It's had head gaskets but that's about it.

I have to decide whether to sell it now, or put some new KYB's on it and buy new snows. That would be about $1,200, so probably worth doing.

So let me ask you this: the shift into 3rd gear is abrupt EVERYTIME. Any ideas? I mean it smoothly shifts into all other gears, but 3rd. It's rather annoying!

I'll check tomorrow at work to see if there is a TCM reflash for this, there are multiple TCM updates for various shifting and other concerns. Maybe this will be in there too, also we could try doing a trans re-learn procedure.

Shoot me a PM and maybe we can meet up at my work and see what we can do.

Now turned 155K. Had the trans fluid change and they found a leak, so it's a lot perkier.

Also had KYB shocks put in to replace the Monroes. Much improved.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't go 250k or more with routine maintenance. Just be sure to follow your dealer's advice and maintain the car like it needs to be- love your car and it'll love you back.

No doubt.

The question is whether the additional maintenance costs incurred make it worthwhile to do so.

My buddy has an 06 3.0R LL Bean Sedan. It's at 133k miles and it's currently at the dealer for a throttle issue. The starter has been making noise and will likely be replaced under his extended warranty. Recently a coolant leak near the coolant temp sensor (spraying coolant all over the engine bay) was fixed also.

All of those things are relatively minor I think and overall the motor seems fine, pulls hard, and runs smoothly.

We've done a bunch of maintenance in the last month. Not unexpected given the 156,000 miles. We had to replace the front lower control arms, sway bar bushings front and rear, a transmission line that was leaking a bit, and one of the near-new KYB shocks ruptured and had to be replaced under warranty.

The only think I don't like about the car is the integrated radio and climate control system. I'd like to be able to put in bluetooth and USB, but there doesn't seem any good way.

Is it the one where the climate control is above the radio?

Go over to LegacyGT.com and go through the trans forum for info on the 5EAT.

The 3.0 is one of the best Subaru engines here in the states. Just give it standard maintenance.

Peace,

Greg

I just bought an 06 LL Bean and I love the car, planning to do upgraded tranny and supercharger kit once I get the funds. I also have a 97 impreza wagon with full wrx swap and my outback is more fun to drive (minus being auto)

I have noticed that when shifting from 1st to 2nd it laggs about 400 rpms, but every other shift after that is only about 200-300 rpms, anyone else notice this? I'm thinking about doing the 5eat tranny upgrade

The H6's that I see around work are really hit or miss when it comes to problems, some people seem to really maintain them so I've seen 200k+ quite a lot. On the flip side, I've had plenty of 100k H6's falling apart because of neglect and years of auto-fatigue.

What about fuel? Does everyone run them on Premium as recommended or is it alright to put 87 in them?

Word on the street is they run like crap with 87.

They're a fairly robust engine, although according to the FSM you shouldn't machine the heads (.004" scrape is limit, iirc). I know they'll work ok after having more than twice that taken off, but the timing cover bolt holes may need to be enlarged to get them to line up.

The 108 timing cover bolts are a PITA, the allen heads are soft and tend to strip.

Update.

This wagon how has 247,000 miles on it. Just drove it from Boston to Colorado Springs for my kid to use.

We've used Regular all that time except when towing.
