well, this is the second identical* one. First one made it 16k miles iirc before I sold it. This one is nearly at 20k!

2018 sold privately, bought a 2019 for minimal additional cost thanks to Fed + then-more-generous State tax credits.

* the 2018 had a garbage built in wireless charging pad for phones, garbage because it wasn't Qi (really! required extra phone case to be compatible) and because it was at floor level, the worst place possible. Skipped that option on the 2019, everything else identical, color, trim, etc.

Re the sliding door issue I made an appointment for warranty service. Not sure if there's going to be anything they can do since the presumed gremlin responsible is only causing an intermittent issue, but we'll see.

Plus maybe their overeager used car manager can unsolicited offer me a swell trade-in value on this 2019 towards a 2021, as Chrysler has a $4,750 rebate offer (on top of $7.5k Fed and $2.5k CO for this year).

My old CPO VAG has been 100% more reliable than the new Ford we bought the wife a year later. And I drove it for double the miles that we've put on the Ford.

Edge ST is going back next week for the auto start/stop "feature" that sometimes required you to restart the car at a red light. But just sometimes.

CPO VAG was 2017 Jetta GLI, bought with 8k and traded in at 63k, aside from oil changes and tires, it was dead reliable. Was in twice - a broken clip in glovebox (that holds a pen) and a bad o-ring on a non OEM oil filter.

2019 Edge ST was bought new off the showroom floor and has 30k on it now. Will most likely get rid of Edge ST after it's "fixed", again.

Yeah, website needs the work. They just started the company. Jay and I know the owners, which is the only reason I posted it.

At first I was like “we do?” Then I looked at the site and was like “that’s gotta be Brian and Heidi”

That pic of his rally car has to be one of the only times I’ve seen it actually running.

Door resolution after it spent a day at the dealer yesterday:

Annoyingly the dealer is 13 miles from my workplace (and 11 from home) so doesn't fall on their "we'll cover an Uber up to 10 miles" policy.

Anyway, apparently there's a door module that they can interrogate and which had a stored code for a stuck button due to some software fault that's addressed through a firmware update. TMYK.

I had their sales guys get me a trade-in quote as well given the used car market and current incentives and all, as at the proper price I'd jump, at least after closing on the HELOC as per the mountain house thread.

Anyway, KBB trade in in good condition with this 2019's miles and equipment is on the order of $33.5-36.5k iirc. Larry Miller's sales dude came back with $28.5k. Yeah, nah

Moar details

https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/f150-lightning/2022/

That's IRS. On a Ford half-ton. This is huge, assuming it percolates back to the gassers.

Re towing and payload the Ford site has some more details, proving my suspicion correct:

Maximum available towing of 10k: XLT or Lariat with big pack and Max Trailer Tow Package. Meanwhile, max payload of 2k on XLT or Lariat with small pack.

The headline 0-60 figure is for the big pack. Unclear from wording on site whether the small pack can also put out 563 hp-presumably not given the acceleration.

The frunk has a name: Mega Power Frunk. 14.1 cu ft, 400 lb payload capacity within it. 4 120V outlets within the frunk, thus its name, with on-board power as per the below.

On-board power as introduced on the F-150 hybrid, er, PowerBoost. Pro Power Onboard puts out 9.6 kW in the higher end option including a 240V outlet for a welder or the like.

Lowest trim isn't described as XL but rather "the commercial oriented truck". I'm imagining grey plastic and vinyl on the seats and floor here. Lowest trim possibly small battery only.

XLT has cloth seats, surround view camera, and has options for the big pack, Pro Power Onboard, and the driver assist suite that includes BlueCruise (think SuperCruise-hands free with driver attention monitoring).

Lariat adds the big center stack display as in the press photos, leather heated/vented seats, power liftgate (didn't know that's a thing), 20" wheels, Pro Power Onboard standard. Still optional are the driver assist package, big battery, and a fancy moonroof.

Platinum will be $90k pre-credits, apparently. Big pack standard, fancy stereo, fancy leather, 22" wheels, fancy moonroof standard. Seems like this will be a very high margin trim!

How does it compare to the truck that a 4yo drew?

Iirc Elon claimed $40k for RWD 250 mile, $50k for AWD 350 mile, $70k for AWD 500? mile super fastness. But Tesla is out of Federal tax credit territory.

An XLT with the big pack will be pretty close after the credit to the mid grade Cybertruck, with the benefit of not being bizarre or a solar gain/glare maximization experiment. The worksite-aimed features (big center console, tailgate with indents for clamps and keeping tools from rolling away, the 240V onboard power outlets) will win some practical buyers.

I would guess the frame is different on gas models and won't have the IRS.

You were doing well to get their "$35k" Model 3 for $35k when they were still eligible for the tax credit.

Compatibility with regular toolboxes, bed toppers, ladder racks, etc. + ease of repair equivalent to any other aluminum bodied modern F-150 will make this a no-brainer for commercial buyers compared to the Cybertruck.

Agree.

And I think the design will resonate with more people.

Smartest thing Ford did was making this new Lightning look like a normal F-150

re whether I actually will get one, financial stretching for house #2 aside, see this math that I apparently did not crosspost to this thread.

From November 2020, noting higher gas prices since then but still me driving the Land Cruiser very little in this era. I'll update the math for $600/mo depreciation and $3/gal gas (was $300-600 variable depreciation and $2/gal gas originally):

>>>>>

Quote:
Over the last 7.75 months I've spent $510 on gas, or about $66/mo. This is for roughly 500 miles/mo of driving, with the math checking out at $2.00/gal and 15 MPG average in the Land Cruiser. To be fair with current gas prices we'll use $100/mo now. (We use a negligible amount of gas in the minivan given that it's a PHEV.) The Land Cruiser also depreciates at perhaps $150/mo these days.

Let's assume that a F-150 Lightning or its ilk would depreciate at $600/month. Said newer vehicle would also cost perhaps $100/mo more to insure.

Given my fuel costs, how much fuel/energy savings would a new vehicle have to net per my 500 miles monthly to break even?

Current costs: $100/mo gas + $150/mo depreciation = $250/mo (+ baseline insurance costs).

Competitor vehicle costs: $600/mo depreciation + $100/mo extra insurance cost + $X in energy costs == $250/mo at high end
==> X = -$450/mo

So said vehicle would have to pay me 90 cents per mile to break even with my current costs.
<<<<<

Realistically 500 miles in a F-150 Lightning would cost me about 200 kWh, or ~$20 at my rates, ignoring the effect of my solar panels since they cost something as well. So the true question would be:

Would driving X, Y, or Z EV be worth ~$470 per month to me?

and the answer to that is a pretty solid "no" at this point in my life. (A crew cab pickup, whether from Tesla or Ford, also isn't a straight substitute for the true 7 seater Land Cruiser for shuttling both kids in boosters/car seats + in-laws about, too.)

That said, I will be driving more in future years as the elder two kids are both headed back to in-person school but moreover headed to a school that's downtown.

Assuming I drop them off, head to work, then to home at the end of the day, that'd be 23.4 miles. (The comparison now is 0 miles on the Land Cruiser on a regular day since I always take the wife's PHEV minivan unless she needs it randomly.)

I won't be able to do this every day because sometimes I actually need to be at work on time, but an added 100 miles per week on the Land Cruiser is fair since I'll be driving it just to work and back more, too, because the wife will reclaim her keys for kid pickup.

The math at 1000 miles per month:

Baseline costs can then be assumed to be $350/mo. A prototypical EV's electricity cost would be $40/mo and thus the extra cost would be $390/mo.

1000 miles per month and $4/gal gas would reduce that by $66 to $334/mo, so still not a huge swing ultimately.
