Isn’t that how much a truck cost now-a-days?

I've been enjoying watching Long Way Up on Apple TV +, the 2 Rivian prototypes have been pretty reliable, though that show focuses more on Ewan and his buddy on the prototype Harleys, which have been also surprisingly reliable on that show.

Yeah I didn't think the pricing was outrageous for the market segment they're aiming at.

Not sure what the gripe is?

I guess you're right, for the market that buys F-150 Platinums and commutes to work +/- heading up to the mountains for Instagramming now and then. But that's but a small subset of the F-150 market as a whole.

Yore a small subset.

I don’t think they are shooting for the entire market right now.

But that's the market Rivian is looking at. They don't want the 400K low-margin fleet truck sales Ford does. At least...not during their production ramp-up.

But if the Cybertruck does come in at its promised price points it'll eat Rivian's lunch and steal that exact same subset ex the small portion that are Never-Cybertruckers due to its alien looks.

I agree, they are going to have it rough trying to compete with Tesla.

I really think they should have started with the SUV. I'm much more interested in an all electric SUV/minivan. Of course, the downside is that buyers like me are a lot more price sensitive than truck buyers.

Obviously I haven’t looked into it a ton but isn’t the Rivian a quad motor truck? More teh motors=more teh better? And it doesn’t look stupid.

I’m a Rivian fan over the cybertruck based on what I see so far. However I think a EV F150 is going to be the longer term winner of all of this.

Not really, with 1 million vehicles sold a year and an avg MSRP of $46,7k, there's plenty of market in the premium pick up realm.

Hell they sell enough high priced ones in Texas alone to name a trim level based on it.

I don't think the Cybertruck will come in at the stated price, and at the lower priced ones, it doesn't really compete in terms of features (ie, not really in the same market segment), once specced out to be more apples to apples, the price will likely be very similar.

It looks stupid in its own different way. 4.5' effective bed length.

Yes, one motor per wheel (inboard, not hub motors as that's not a good idea wrt bearing life, lack of gear reduction).

https://www.caranddriver.com/rivian/r1t

Cybertruck is one motor at rear axle; one motor at each axle; or one motor at front, one motor per rear wheel depending on trim. Like the Model S.

The Rivian payload of 1,760 lbs is very limiting if one wants to tow, IMO. Also limiting is the lack of CCS stations with trailer pull-through capability.

But as an around-town truckster with Instagram-location capability then yeah, sure, knock yourself out.

Yeah, I do forgot how financially stupid Joe Sixpack is now and then.

I should revisit this thread of mine

Guess I can post this here? New car shopping has begun.
  • Want a v6, not a 4 cylinder turbo
  • Well equipped
  • Under/about $40k brand new,
  • sedan or mid-sized SUV,
  • No German brands
  • This will be my last car for a while - 7-10 years. So needs to be reliable. But I don't drive much

Am I missing any on my list?
Ford Edge ST
Toyota Camry XLE V6
Dodge Charger Scat Pack
Genesis G70 3.3
Kia Telluride - probably too expensive and too big
Acura TLX V6 type S Too expensive and dont' want to wait on it
Chevy Blazer Too expensive
Toyota Avalon - meh
Nissan Maxima - meh
Lexus ES350
Lexus IS300
Infinity Q50
Wildcard possibility - Mustang Mach-E Premium

Should I start a separate thread?

Hyundai Palisade SEL or Kia Telluride EX.

I am most likely replacing my 8 year old MDX with a Palisade Limited. I was anxiously awaiting the 2022 MDX reveal yesterday. Rumors were that even base models were going to come well equipped (heated/ventilated/massaging seats, etc). Nope. Still need the Advance model to get all that stuff. $60k+. Palisade Limited is $49k. That's most likely the route I am going.

Edit: Damnit, didn't see the Telluride on your list (it wouldn't be too expensive - but if it's too big, then that's that).

Honda Passport?

Mazda CX-5?
My wife has a 2016 MDX that we've liked, but it did have the transmission replaced under warranty recently. And the entertainment system UI SUUUUUUUUUCKs. I do like the RDX, but really don't want a 4 cylinder. turbo Same issue with the Mazda. I recall the Mazda 6 may be 6 cylinder soon??? Or did I make that up? I updated my list to reflect long term reliability. This car is going to be around a while if at all possible.

You caught my ninja edit.

I have done nothing but oil changes on the 13 MDX. Granted, it only just hit 54,000 miles. But I was in an accident when it only had 1500 miles on it ($25k in repairs - wished it was totaled) but I have had ZERO issues with it. Which is why the 2022 was on my short list. I really want the Advance or A Spec, but do not want to spend $60k on a car.

Yea, I checked and the Mazda is a turbo 4, so I replaced my suggestion with the Honda Passport. Smaller than Telluride, 6 banger, Honda reliability, can probably get well equipped under $40.

I would add Toyota Highlander. My wife has one and I really like it. I might get one for myself when I get rid of my 3 series wagon (that or a 4Runner). The XLE comes in at your price cutoff. It’s very reliable. It’s also a few inches smaller in each direction compared to the Telluride, which you mentioned might be too large.
