Default Got a Crosstrek CVT? You're (probably) covered

You probably already know this, but the Crosstrek's warranty on the CVT has been extended to 10 years/100k miles. Ours failed and was replaced at 53k miles. We're now at about 93k miles with no issues. The dealer did give me a loaner car for the week it took to install.

Next is the excessive oil consumption coverage. If your crosstrek uses excess amounts of oil, bring it to a dealer and they do an oil change and give you a range of miles to bring it back. They check what's been used and in my case, they found me in the waiting room and said "You need a short block". Mine is sitting at the dealer and I'll bring it in a couple weeks from now. My dealer offered me a loaner car. The warranty is now 8 years/100k miles.

Default Question

Sorry I’m bumping a super old thread but I just bought a 2014 Crosstrek with the cvt. It’s only at 85k and was a trade in at a dodge dealership so I know the transmission hasn’t been paid much attention. What do I need to do to ensure the transmission is taken cover of and doesn’t become an issue? I planned on going to a dealership for the first oil change but should I go sooner? Thanks!

When you go to a dealer, ask for a history on the car. At 85k, it is certainly possible that the transmission has already been changed. Ours was done at 53k miles. (note, we're at about 101k now with no additional problems). Ask what you should do for the transmission, which I'd guess they'll say "nothing".

As for oil burning, before you leave, following an oil change, check the oil level. Then check it maybe every 1k miles. If the engine is going through enough oil to potentially be a candidate for the oil consumption test, you won't make it 2000 miles without noticing a drop on the dip stick. If you do see that, take it in and tell them what you see. What I would tend to do is to bring it in right before you'd normally get the oil changed as they do give you a free oil change in the test.

What I found is that the oil light would go on before my oil change interval arrived (5k for me) and I'd have to add at least a quart. Fortunately, the F engines simply give you a low oil light, unlike the EJ engines where an oil light means "You've lunched your engine".

Do you know which years/trims this apply’s to? I have a 2016 Hybrid. Feels perfect atm, but less than 50K miles.

The wife and I just bought a 14 Crosstrek. What years were these issues associated too?

With ours, it was 100% fine, A-ok, then the dash became a Christmas light display and that was it. The trans was reporting that it was slipping. I drove it for the 2 weeks prior to my appointment and it drove fine. So it was not something I noticed before or even after the light show.

So were the Crosstrek and XV Crosstrek different when it comes to this issue?

I think so. The XV ended with the new generation in 18, with Crosstrek being the entire name now. Someone else would have to confirm that 15+ has some differences in the CVT itself.

Their oil consumption requirement seems a bit ridiculous to me. Mine burns 1 quart every 1k miles. They said it has to burn at least 1qt every 500 miles or so. Getting sick of carrying oil around.

It's 10 ounces in 1200 miles. That's about a quart in 3600 miles. Your 1 qt in 1k miles easily meets the spec for a new short block. If a dealer told you that, find another dealer.

If you have ever seen how thin the rings are and how light the ring tension is on an N/A FB engine you would realize that low a consumption spec is a miracle. Anything over 0w20 will pump past the rings and burn. The compression rings are almost half the height of EJ rings.
All in the name of legislated fuel economy.

Yah, the Subaru guy on youtube pointed that out. It's all about MPG. Make the engine more loose and drop the oil viscosity.

Well, component of CVT #2 appears to have crapped out. Christmas tree on the dash at 150k miles, about 100k of replacement CVT. Codes point to CVT valve controller. South Main Auto has a video on how to replace it. I'm not going to do it myself and will get an estimate from my local, good mechanic. Along with a needed CVT axle, it'll be something over two grand. With car prices these days (a small used dealer locally who does only Subarus has cars like mine in great condition for $13k!), it looks like it's worth it to just repair and keep it going.
