Default Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

This thread is for speculation on where Marvel is taking their universe.

It's for all the tie-ins from each movie, including the Marvel One shots.

It's for all the after movie end scenes that hint at future events, and all the subtle remarks in each movie that reference the other events.

There probably will be spoilers, you have been warned.

Did anyone see the new One Shot on Thor 2, All Hail the King? What were your thoughts on that? New Mandarin? Who is he going to be the bad guy for?

How many bad guys does Marvel have now on film, lurking about still?
Thanos, Loki, The Collector?

Will there ever be another Hulk movie? Or have they just decided it cant be done further?

I know Marvel hasn't written most of the scripts for future films yet, but they must have a rough draft over arcing plan. I'd love to see it.

I bet they're getting ready to make Avengers 2.

From everything I've seen that seems like a good direction to go in.

They're rebooting Fantastic Four in 2015

I fear it's gonna suck badly.

Maybe they're gearing up for an Infinity Gauntlet movie trilogy!

So, can one of you guys give a synopsis of who owns what (Disney, Sony, etc.), and how in the hell it ended up this way?

Well first of all... rename this thread, its the Marvel Cinematic Universe and yes we are in the middle of Phase 2, Marvel already has plans for Phase 3 and has signed on a lot of key actors through Phase 3.

Fox = All X-Men related stuff, FF-related stuff, Daredevil (sold back to Marvel), Ghost Rider (I think sold back to Marvel)

Universal = the Ang Lee Hulk movie

Sony/Columbia = all Spiderman related stuff

New Line Cinema = Blade

They apparently sold film rights for almost ALL their major characters to various studios which never got around to making movie version yet.

Iron Man = New Line Cinema
Thor = Paramount pictures
Lions Gate = Black Widow

There's probably more but I can't remember.

It happened that way because back when all those movies came out, Marvel didn't have their own studios so they made money selling film rights to various established studios. By the time Marvel Studios got up & running it had to actively buy back these rights from whatever studios were willing to sell.

Obviously Fox made a ton of money off the X-Men franchise and Sony with Spiderman so they're like 'yeah we're keeping these, thanks'. But Marvel was able to get back various rights to the others.

What is interesting is that the Spiderman and Hulk and other Marvel likenesses at Universal Studios technically belong to Disney and Universal has to pay royalties to them

Disney will eventually get their claws into the XMEN and Spiderman franchises. It may take time, but it will happen.

I'm sure rights for film, tv, merchandising and likenesses for amusement parks, etc, are all fractured and handled by separate contracts.

Sony used to have ALL SpiderMan rights including both film and TV, but recently they sold the TV rights back to Marvel which explains why theres been a few different animated TV Spiderman series the last few years. Sony retained the film rights since that's clearly still a cash cow.

I thought that selling film rights to another studio was more like leasing it out and it had an expiration date, but it doesn't seem so (unless the studio does not produce anything within a time limit, hence Sony relaunching their Spiderman films with a new cast) It seems like a permanent contract until the owner of those rights choose to sell it back. And get this news.

Sony wants to release a Spider-Man-related movie. Every. Single. Year.

so basically Sony knows this comic book movie bubble won't last forever. The general non-nerd movie audience will soon tire of superheros and tire of seeing spiderman. So this dick-headed strategy is to milk every last penny out of the Spiderman concept until it stops becoming profitable. After Spiderman is totally used up like a cheap, loose whore. Then Sony might consider selling the Spidey rights back to Marvel...at a time moviegoers are sick to death of Spidey.

I wouldn't be shocked if Fox studios pulls a similar stunt.

So Marvel sold their rights on a piece-by-piece basis until they formed Marvel Studios, then Disney came along and acquired Marvel Studios? Interesting.

I've been pretty oblivious to most of this stuff, so thanks for that!

I dont understand why Sony wouldn't want to share in the profits with Marvel. I think it would benefit both.

And how come I keep seeing avenger cartoons with spiderman? Even cartoon movies?

The best FF pilot was the original '60's cartoon episode. Same with Spidey.

And Johnny Quest kicked ass.

Because they don't have to legally or contractually? I'm trying hard not to give a snarky/sarcastic answer.

And I don't get how Sony giving a share of the profits to Marvel would 'benefit both sides'.
