Default Legacy GT transmission swap

Does anyone know if a 2005 Legacy GT 5spd will bolt up directly to an 06 wrx? I'm wondering if finding a used transmission and installing it would be cheaper and easier than swapping the gears. I'm pretty sure I've seen the transmissions selling for under $1000 used. Even if it costs more like $1500, swapping the whole transmission (if it bolts up directly) must be easier than taking apart apart the case and swapping gears. Am I right? Horribly wrong?

I'd say you're better off just getting some RA gears.

Different final drive in your wrx vs the legacy..as far as bolting up..no problem..but you will have some issues! Look for an 06 or 07 used wrx trans! They still pop up from time to time! I have seen them for as low as $1,200 in good working order. Good luck!

there is a 2006 WRX tranny with super low miles in the NWIC classifieds for $1100 right now!

FYI any EJ trans will bolt up to any EJ motor, but you have to worry about final drive ratios matching your rear diff or you could toast some stuff quickly.

Well my stock 06 wrx transmission is running fine for now. I'm just considering options in case third gear goes. So if you get a legacy gt 5spd, you can match it up provided you have the matching rear differential?

search..off the top of my head I believe the legacy's have the 4.11 rear..not positive though..as I'm sure you know the 06 and 07 wrx are a 3.7 fd. good luck...!

Legacy GT transmissions have no speedo sensor in them either. You have to open it up to install a speed sensor in order to have a functioning speedometer and odometer.

So far, what I'm gathering is that to install a Legacy GT 5spd in a 2006 WRX, you would need:
1) matching rear differential (not sure what ratio)
2) open case and install proper speedo gear

Sounds like either way, installing gears or swapping an entire Legacy GT 5spd, I would have to open the transmission up. If you install Legacy GT 5spd gears, how is it possible to change the final drive ratio to 3.9 from the 06-07 wrx's 3.7? I ask beacuse I see vendors selling LGT gears, but not the final drive.

Or, you could buy my 05' LGT swap kit that has everything done, and everything you need. Speedo gear is installed, comes with clutch, has the matching 4:11 limited slip rear diff. Seach my threads and you will see. I would attach a link, but I'm not allowed.

I BELIEVE you use different front axles too, I may be wrong on this. I tried to look this up and confirm it, but with no luck ...

Not really. LGT tranny uses male axles. So does WRX depending on the year. Male WRX axle fits LGT axle no problem.

Doesn't the axle also depend on whether or not the wrx is an 02-05 or 06-07? I think I read something about 02-05 use female and 06-07 use male, I may be wrong...

Yeah the 06' 07' male axles slide right into the LGT tranny. I installed 04' axle stubs into it so I could run my 03' wrx female axles. The stubs just pop in with circlips and can easily be popped right out to use male axles.

Are there any differences between the 1996-2000 and 2005-2006 Legacy rear differentials? Maybe one is open and one is an LSD? I believe they both use a 4.111 rear differential...

The required front 4.111 differential would be included in the 05 LGT transmission, correct?

Also, if you buy an 05 LGT transmission, it would come with the 4.111 final drive, right? All you would need are a speedo gear and matching 4.111 rear diff (open or LSD), or am I wrong?

Question. I'm in the process of figuring out where I went wrong with my 2001 LGT 5spd swap In to my 02 Wrx. When you said clutch. Did you have to use the Wrx flywheel/clutch or did you use the LGT flywheel/clutch. Any info helps. I'll be tearing it appart again this weekend and don't want to chase ghost when the problem I'm using the Wrx fw/c. Any info from anyone helps!
