Transmission is the 4EAT that uses clutches to engage the rear.

I have a question. My car is just over 150,000kms and I always use Motul Dexron III and a Transmission Cooler. I find my tranny do not behave like before and sometimes labour and do not want to shift lively. Its always quick to leave first gear and love higher gears. Sometimes when the car shifts, it feels like the clutch slips a bit like I don't have enough line pressure. I want to change to a 6MT, but financially not capable at this point in time.

Can any one advice me whats going on?

Is the Solenoids going?

Are the clutches going?

Please advice.

Thank you.

When I did it cost around $550 before shipping to and from IPT.

Not true on a EJ series Automatic Subaru. Line pressure is controlled by throttle position. The throttle position isn't changing, only the power output of the engine.

Subaru started doing this from the factory LONG ago. There is a pin on the older ECU that you can trigger at any time to temporarily reduce engine power. I always imagined using it as a poor mans valet mode.

Quick question for the guru's

Is there a way to fool the transmission into thinking the pedal is pressed all the way down? Some resistor mod maybe? I feel like with a stage 2+E85 setup, the torque generated at 5% throttle stock is WAY less than 5% throttle now.

I'm just thinking this could be good for transmission longevity.
Thanks

There is a shift kit for the 4EAT. It's a TransGo kit.

Link to the kit. http://transgoonline.com/products.ph...&parent_id=145

Do a google search and you'll come up with places to buy it. Also, do a search on LegacyCentral and you will come up with the install manual for it.

The TPS signal is a 5 volt sweep. Interrupt the signal to the TCU with the voltage you want.

I'm looking at the Level 10 valve body upgrade kit for $198. Has anyone done a valve body job? How difficult is this?

Level 10 Subaru PTS Valvebody Kit 4EAT

Level 10 PTS Subaru Bulletproof Rebuilding Kit 4EAT,5EAT,R4AXEL

There is also a "Bulletproof" transmission rebuild kit for $598. Is this something a normal person can do, or does it require special training? I happen to have a spare 4EAT transmission with low miles I'd like to beef up to handle the power I'm putting down.

Info here:

Uhh... If you've never done a valve-body, or have someone local, I personally wouldn't touch a valvebody kit, unless you have VERY good understanding of how they work. If you Fu$% it up, your tranny is toast (or just won't shift properly, if at all...).

The rebuild kit, requires you to completely dismantle your auto to install it. From what I understand, it's not an easy thing to do, mainly because of all the oddities and/or special tools (I can't remember if that's one main issue) that are involved in putting it back together.

If your really interested, I'd save a little more coin, and buy the IPT modified valve body and the IPT High Stall Torque Converter. The only reason for IPT, is that they are an extremely well known performance tranmissions builder. I'm not saying L2 isn't, but I've never heard of them, and I've been looking for a little while now (this is a plan of mine next year, so I can sympathize for these desired upgrades).

Btw, if you plan on swapping your transmission after getting this done, seriously do yourself the favor and get the HS torque converter... you can launch at higher rev's without worrying about cooking your transmission. Also, if your really planning on upping your HP, get a tranmission cooler, it's easily worth the $150 in parts.

Everything you've said sounds spot on. I did some research on Level 10 and the majority of people that gave their feedback was negative. Not good. I was hoping for a quick fix, but from everything I've learned on my engine build, there's no such thing.

Thanks for your feedback!
