1998 Subaru EJ22 engine SOHC timing belt issue
Hi all,
I recently had a problem during a timing belt replacement where I had initially lined everything up what I thought was perfectly ended up becoming out of sync. (see pictures below) The person that installed the belt said it may have been a bad belt but it appeared to have the same number of teeth but was quite hard to get off. All three belt marks were lined up during installation. All new pulleys also. When I started the car the first time, it cranked but wouldn't start and would backfire and white smoke coming from the intake. I am not sure the issue. I am thinking of taking the timing belt off and reusing the old belt (only 2 years old, but changed due to leaking oil getting on belt) Can anyone help me brainstorm or give me some input to what the problem could be? Are my valves damaged? Thank you Edit: Solved my problem. Timing was off due to either a trash timing belt or whoever did the timing belt for me didn't do a great job. Either way I just got engine to run for a few seconds. Will try again tomorrow when the exhaust and radiator is in.
