Just finished mine. I was scared at first but the instructions were real easy to follow. I'm usually anti-cut/splice but it worked out and the car feels so much smoother and pulls so much harder. Well worth the money!

I just redid mine and I got rid of any splicing.
I had the entire harness out of the car so where I originally had a splice, I took the wire that was originally between the igniter and the main engine connector and ran that straight to the ecu connector and installed a new terminal. Now i only have a single wire that goes between the ecu and the engine harness. I lost about three to four feet of wire for each of the four igniters, I lost the strange hung of wire that ended up residing in the engine bay and I lost one more connection point that could cause a failure. |

My Subaru is in transit from Japan and i already know I'll have to eventually do the conversion. So I'm trying to get parts and be ready for it. I got a good line on some cheap coils but most of the posts I read about are using 02+ coil packs however the ones I have lined up are 04+ is there any difference or will it work all the same? Thanks.

mkay figured out my issue, I bought (snowjob)'s legacy. Apparently I have a jay dee mmmm motor which has two bolts for the coilpack instead of a single bolt. I believe it to be EJ20G because snowjob said it was out of 96 wrx. Any help on this? Am I screwed and just have to find jdm coilpacks?
i found my problem on wikipedia. Looks like i might have a 93 motor. Any fixes for me? And if not anyone know where I can get a Coilpack that will work with the two bolt setup? Last edited by REECERS; 06-24-2012 at 01:35 AM. Reason: added info |

You have a 1989-1993 engine. You can make the coil packs work but it involves some cutting and drilling which is not ideal. I've already seen one pack shorting out to the engine because too much insulator material had to be removed.
You can also purchase four AEM coils and use short spark plug leads: http://www.aemelectronics.com/high-o...dumb-coil-1239 http://www.ebay.com/itm/AEM-High-Out...3695af&vxp=mtr I'm planning to use those on (one of) my next conversion(s). |

They don't bolt to the head. You can bolt them to a bracket (DIY) or chassis rail and use short plug leads.

For those of you with odd heads, like the older Leggy 2 bolt ones, you can keep your eyes peeled for Nology wires that were made for the B4 legacy, I found a set on Ebay Japan (from Hong Kong however) and the seller took a reasonable offer.
makes dealing with the plugs and coil set up a lot easier, the Nology wires have ran ground wires as well, plus heat shielding. Just food for thought, I'll be wiring in my new set up next weekend. |

Amazing i was getting misfires and hesitation as low as 3k rpms as soon as boost hit. Now it's smooth all the way to redline. Car runs smoother, my afrs are leaner, no longer running rich.
Btw, stock cops looked fine. Only one had aslight crack in the plastic. So even if they look fine yet could be bad. Thanks rob great writeup. I got a set of plugs for to cops, made it much easier to wire. |

Success!!!!!!
I just did this conversion last night and let me tell you: holy hell what a difference. The pull that my soob has now is awesome!!
Thank you Rob!!!!! The Instructions you gave for this conversion were very easy to follow and I had no issues. I have a friend with a 94 STI and he wants to do this conversion. If any of you know where to get some more 2002+ coils let me know Thanx |

Hello, Im from Costa Rica, I have a 1996 Impreza GT, which comes with EJ20G ,I havent read all this thread pages because of lack of time, anyway Im a little confused because Išve found more than one part number for 02-up coils, so anybody can tell me which coil part numbers work for my car?
The second thing is whats the price for the 02 wrx coils in the US? In my Local dealership they are offering me 01 wrx sti coils for around $86 each coil! |

Is this something you should do for an EG20K as well or just the EG20G?

Hi there.
Im planning doing this coil conversion on my 93 Legacy EJ20G. One thing i dont understand about this: Its stated that you have to bypass the ignition module. By the same time one should only make one coil after another and test them after installing. Im wondering how someone can test e.g. the first installed coil while the other ones are still requiring the ignition module? My plan is to not cut wires at the two connectors that run into the ignition module but to build cables that connect them together. The other thing is: As far as i understand one has to cut around on the ignition coil to get it into the legacys two bolt heads? Does someone has a pic at how the coil looks after it has been treated that way? I dont want to destroy my new coils ^^ [EDIT] What curly2k3 said is a good idea too. Im thinking on doing such bracket for myself and get some spark plug wiring + leads. Im just curious which i should buy. Is a grounding cable mandatory or can i use leads without? Which connectors do the cables need to have? Male - Male or Female - Male? Last edited by MrWeedster; 05-02-2013 at 01:19 PM. |

Outfront Motorsports sell a connector complete with pins, that will fit the coil, so that anyone who broke an OEM connector can fix it.... They would then work great for anyone doing this conversion, not wanting to solder wires to the pins.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Subaru-Ignit...b25fe2&vxp=mtr I bought 6 for an engine project that I am working on. I have a question- Are the WRX coils longer than the STI ones? If so, would that give them a better contact with the plug, or is this not an issue? |
