Picked up panels for mine last night. Will be starting mine once the weather warms up permanently. Front end is swapped...so the rear is an absolute must!
By the way - I admire your ability to dive into a project as a 'learning experience' and not coming from a well-seasoned background in paint/body work. Very impressive end result, I must say. |

I keep seeing the flares that could be moded to look like this. Then I think metal body work. Then back to the cost. If there was more info on the rear bumper modification then I might feel a bit better about doing this.

The rear bumper mod isn't nowhere near as bad the fenders. You can do it the way I did it or get cut offs from a sti bumper and mold them in.

Finally took the time to read through the whole post in one sitting. I agree with a couple others, diving in like this with no real experience is cool/scarey, but the final results look great.
I've done smaller jobs on cars, I also do a fair amount of work refinishing gelcoat/GRP high performance sailplanes where surface tolerance is +/- .002" in 3" for aerodynamics. As to painting silver, yeh, sorta a PITA. Hard to decide where to stop painting. I see you're in NJ, my son has gone to some recent meets out near Long Valley as well as IKEA off rt17 in our 99 Impreza L (also silver). He would love to finish fixing typical rear fender rust and do similar flairs. He would also like to paint the hood and DS front fender as they are off a different color car to fix crash damage (the hood and fender remind you of Christmas......red fender, green hood). Any plans soon to reshoot paint? Too cold now, another month or so for it to warm up unless you get a warm spell. Congrats again. Thanks for sharing. |

Oh yeah, definitely gonna re-spray. The plan is to plumb in two compressors in series to get more air into the gun. That should disperse the paint more evenly. Then I'm going to paint the car with all panels on. This way if there are any gradients, they won't be obvious.
Also picked up the rear sti bumper cutouts so I'm gonna mold them in like p3sk3tt. Couldn't do it last time since I couldn't source the parts. |

Are you running 1/4" ID hoses or 3/8" ID hoses? A long 1/4" can be a flow restriction especially for a HVLP gun. Double check the specs and then look up VFM for both hose sizes, sorta like picking the size of an extension cord.
For the hose, fittings, separators, etc., 1/4" is cheaper but "may" be causing issues. Maybe a better painter than I can comment. |
