DIY Powder Coating thread
So I am starting this thread as I want to see where other DIY people are with powder coating.
So here is an example of my recent work. A Chrome base coat with a blue candy top coat. This is my first time doing a two stage powder coating. I am using a Craftsman Powder Coating gun from eBay for $35. With a $35 toaster oven from Costco. Using Chrome and blue powder coating from eBay $20

Looks great. Makes me want to get a home setup. Was it fairly easy to do?

It was not that difficult if you understand the process. Clean, paint with chrome, bake 15 min. Paint blue, fully bake 30 min. Total time about 1 to 1.25 hr.
What you don't see is I got a little heavy and the powder run once in the oven. As you can see the blue came off the bolt down in a tiny spot. Also I have a shop where I had to hook the grounding strap. At the top, the blue didn't cover and it was a bit thicker where the powder pooled. Nothing that will be noticed one it's installed. Overall not bad for my 3rd time powder coating and my first time doing a candy. Yet I still am not sure what color to make the top. Any suggestions? |

Careful, a local started out this way as a hobby... now, it is almost a full time job, with a walk-in oven. He can do motorcycle and ATV frames, axles, etc. Only thing he can't do is full size frames/bodies.
He said the most time intensive part is prepping the part. If it isn't clean, bare metal, it will not adhere well. If I had a spare 220v outlet in the garage, I would already be doing this with a freebie oven I was offered a while back. |

Cheers to powder coating!
I've been powder coating for a short while. Initial setup is a bit expensive (in order to do a wide range of part sizes as well as proper prepping), but its sure nice to be able to do. |

I got a used harbor freight powder coat oven (18x18x18 on the in side) and a power coat gun. I just need to get a sand blaster and I will be ready to give this a try.

That HB oven is 220v? I have been looking for 110v solutions.

Hey OP, i want to ask you.
What do u use to prep the part, and how do u spray the powder on the part when u are ready? Do u have the ground it, so the powder will stick to the part? PS: I have a basic EASTWOOD powder coat system. FOr some reason i can never to 2 stage coating, i BARELY manage to get a perfect appearance with single color paint, and when i try to do candy color, i could NEVER get the 2nd powder to stick with the 1st |

Cleaning was a clean rag and brake cleaner. It was pretty clean but needed that perfect clean. Yes I grounded it on a hole. Your gun is simular to mine I think. When doing a 2 stage only bake it half way. Then do the candy color. Candy can also be added to real chrome as well.

Oh cool. I might consider that then. Kind of wishing I could find something in the 20in range. Like an old lab oven. There used to be one that was made by dispatch that was double door 110v. More then large enough to do an intake manifold.

How does your ground look like?
Because mine has a ground and i have to hold down a button while i spray for my gun. I usually do it in my backyard to shoot the powder. And for some reason sometimes the powder goes on good, sometimes it doesnt.... I cant figure out why lol |

My powder gun has a small alligator clip.
You problem might be that switch doesn't work all the time. Might take a multi meter and check it out. If it was me I would cut the switch out and wire it direct to a clip. |

The electrical is not that bad. What you want to do is make sure it's connected all the way through when you push the button. So turn the multi meter to where it make sound when both leads touch. Then touch each end. If it beeps. It's good. But if you move the wire and it turns off it has a connection issue.
me spray booth or anything serious equipment. No way. I basically backup my car in the garage. Laid down plastic trash bag on the floor and put my little oven on my coffee table thing. Taped the bag down. Sprayed chrome. Baked 15 min. Spray blue. Bake fully. The best trick I found is how you spray it. It has to be even and thick but not too think to cause running when you bake it. But like I said above, this is only my 3rd item I have ever done. Yet the 1st candy color. |

Don't cause to much air flow or it will mess with your powder hitting the item well.

Oh well maybe we don't have the same gun. As mine has no compressor connection. I have a simple craftsman gun. You plug it in, put your powder and attach the ground. It blows like a hair drier on low. I only spent about $35. It works great considering.

This is what I was talking about how you don't want to put to much on. As it will bleed like paint when you bake it. Good thing it won't be scene. |

I installed the coolant tank and it looks great! Tried to do the top but the paint is on there pretty good. So I'm working on it.
A friend told me a tip. Using stove cleaner will remove anodizing. So cusco strut bar here I come. |
