2019 wrx with approx 30,000miles has developed a timing chain cover leak on the drivers side. It also has the annoying 4th gear shifter vibration. Not too pleased with the issues so far.

2017 WRX Premium 6MT. Bought it bone stock at 5,000 miles.
Went Stage 1 (intake + Cobb OTS map) at 12,000 miles.
Went Stage 2 (turbo-back exhaust + Cobb OTS map) at 30,000 miles.
Went full bolt-on (intercooler, SoCal turbo upgrade, headers, EBCS, bypass valve, TGV/EGR delete) at 43,000 miles. Car currently has 45,000 miles.
No problems whatsoever, though I don't drive it hard that often. I had a CEL for low voltage to O2 sensor (I think - it was a while ago), but cleared it and haven't seen anything since.

Warranty on the leak?

Is it the reverse lock out rattling in 4th? or?

2018 WRX base model
about to roll over 29000 miles
3000 mile oil changes with motul 8100 efe 5w30 w/ subaru oem filter
Protuned since 9000 miles at Bren Tuning, EGR/TGV delete with GS EBCS ~315whp, protuned again at 21000 for Cobb Flex Fuel kit, ~365whp on E60

So coming around 30,000 miles I'll be doing my 10th oil change, the car has been reliable with no issues what so ever. I switch between Ethanol and 93 octane pretty regularly for the mpg's and extra power when ever I feel like it. I'll be looking at the sparkplugs and transmission fluid per Bren's recommendations, might replace the spark plugs if they're out of spec for gap or fouled in any way.

My only issues I've really investigated was a loud clicking and jolting when the wheel was at full turn, going forward or reverse coming from the differential or CV boot. I went to the dealership about it but they couldn't hear it or replicate it. They went for a drive instead of just trying it out in the parking lot so they really missed the point. Although, hey say they didn't see any CV boot leaks or tears, no grease seen otherwise. The issue went away when I swapped out for winter tires but it came back when I swapped for summer. I think the issue stemmed from the stickier tire being less forgiving when at full turn and the diff fluid being cold causing a lock up.

One thing I have noticed is a "plopping" sound when at idle from what I think is the cylinder closest to the driver side. It kind of sounds like the engine is going "plop, plop, plop, plop". This started thousands of miles ago but I'm not sure when exactly. At first I thought it might have been piston slap but youtube videos were hit or miss, some sounded like it, others didn't at all but mine was faint comparatively in any case. I know the DI system sounds like a typewriter and this definitely isn't that. It doesn't sound like rod knock or spun bearing as many youtube videos don't sound anything like my plopping. When I got my car inspected I asked a dealership tech about it and he said he couldn't hear anything through his stethoscope and he thought it was injectors. I have no knock or DAM drops especially since I started running Ethanol. I thought it could be the fueling so I swapped back and forth between Ethanol at ~60% and 93 octane (10% Ethanol) with no real change in sound. I think its getting louder or more pronounced but I don't recall if it was this prevalent before so I don't have a good reference. The plopping goes away when you apply throttle and the sound doesn't seem to carry into the rev range at all, just at idle ~750rpm. My idle is stable with no real fluctuations, the sound doesn't change much when the air compressor kicks in. Either way I'm gonna check spark plugs and stuff, maybe an injector is getting fouled up but my AFR isn't noticeably different. No CEL's or data abnormalities from what I can see.

I might be overreacting to this or my engine is just wearing in but my friend's brand new WRX with less than 2000 miles doesn't sound like mine, its the exact sound minus this plopping.

Default 17 WRX, 92K trans issues.

92K on 17 wrx 6 speed. New clutch and TOB at 30K. No issues, until last week. I believe I lost 6th gear syncro but i'm no transmission guy. I assume its a major teardown so I will be pinching some pennies, and driving a 5 speed for a few weeks. Still can engage into 6th gear, but with any power the stick is knocked out of spot.

Best car I've ever owned though!

Edit* car is all stock. even the tune...

I've never found the need to use 6th in my personal driving. When i cruise in 5th @ 70mph the rpm sits at 3k and nets me ~30mpg. You should have the transmission checked out if missing 6th but I think you can hold out for a bit with 1-5th and save the money for now.

Yah I agree. have found 1-5 will be totally sufficient for now. I will say some years ago, I would make frequent work trips to Dallas Tx from Bowling Green Ky. I have driven 6th gear pretty hard, but not abusive. I have made prob 20 trips middle of the night trips 110 6th gear for 4 hours at a time. Never had any issues just lots of fuel stops. and a few burnt out relays and switches on the side of the interstate. haha.

Ive grown up a bit since then....85 at 3800rpm , will be just fine for now

2017 WRX 6MT bought brand new with 9 miles on the odo
20k miles: Installed Borla S-Type catback
30k miles: MAP Stage 1 93 octane
35k miles: MAP Stage 1+ 93 octane, MAP intake, Perrin turbo inlet hose, Boomba BPV
40k miles: MAP Stage 2 93 octane, MAP catted downpipe, Perrin EBCS Pro, Perrin sump restrictor, Crawford AOS
46k miles: Installed Process West Verticooler and charge pipe
Car currently at 47k miles, no issues to report. Only occasionally knocks when the AC compressor kicks on, giving -1.41 & -2.81 on the FBK & FNL but otherwise it rarely gets a knock reading and has only dropped DAM from bad fuel (different gas station).

Is it possible it's something as simple as the cables aren't routed correctly or pinched or something? Maybe something is simply out of alignment and 6th just isn't engaging fully . Wasnt the trans removed to change the clutch? If you had no issue with 6th prior to the replacement and an issue now, I doubt it's an actual issue in the trans and possibly an issue with the shifter or cables not being set up right, or kinked or a worn rubber bush that collapses instead of pushing or pulling the gear in all the way. I dunno just my $0.02. hope it is something like I mentioned so you can save a significant amount of money

There is a TSB for that. Not sure when they implemented the fix in production, but just Google for wrx 4th gear shake/rattle TSB and you'll easily find it. Requires splitting the trans case and replacing the 3rd/4th gear shift fork assembly with a thicker stronger one and a bushing or sleeve. Covered under 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty. Had it done to our 17 wrx and no issues since.

Am I the only one to notice if you sort by Cobb Stage 1 OTS and MAP Stage 1 OTS none of the MAP tuned engines have blown and several Cobb tuned engines have? I know it's a small sampling and subject to the truthfulness of the one submitting the data, but still.

Ive noticed this as well..It seems like the Cobb STG1 has more knock events even though its supposed to be a less aggressive tune compared to the MAP tune.
Anybody having any issues with MAP tunes ??

I ran the MAP tune for a while before my old stg 1 pro-tune. I wanna say 20k miles worth on the MAP stg1? ran well. I would only see FBK if i held 4k rpm. Not sure why but nothing crazy.
