I want to learn how to weld.
I want to learn how to weld. I'm looking to repair the rust on my car and maybe make some parts. I'm looking at this east wood mig. Would this be good for doing body work? I need one that will work with a 120v outout

I've got that little box, and she's great for the money. I have an older model that cannot accept a feed gun for aluminum, but I just noticed this one does. That just makes it even better.
They also have some TIG machines that are pretty reasonably priced, although it's a steeper initial investment. With some practice, the TIG will do so much more, with more control. I have had a rough time doing thin sheet metal with the little MIG, but I'm also not a great welder and it's been a bunch of years since I tried, so take that with a grain of salt. |

That one can use cover gas, which is good. Stay away from any of them that don't and claim that a flux core will do the same thing. It won't. You can combine the two for some good effect though. Generally not worth the extra cost for the flux wire. Make sure you clean all the paint off of everything to be welded. You can't use enough heat to effectively burn it off as you go.

figured I'd throw in my 2 cents since there's some statements that will lead you astray being someone who tigs stainless and aluminum and migs both as well.
1) a 110 unit will do nothing but sheet metal regardless of what the BS spec sheet says. I can almost guarantee you will want more. All it takes is putting in a dryer style outlet and you can run a 220 unit, but obviously if you simply can't do that you can't do it 2) a TIG will do a nicer job once you learn it, but NOT on sheet metal. Anybody who truly tigs metal that thin knows a tig builds way too much heat for sheet metal. Migs are far better suited, they put the heat down much faster and for shorter duration. 3) Don't even consider getting a feed gun for migging aluminum with some hobbyist welder. Migging aluminum takes so much power it is insane and it is really difficult to do well with anything other than cutting edge equipment, it will be totally worthless on anything other than a professional grade unit. Tigging aluminum also takes a ton of power but is realistic with a home unit. 4) agreed on the flux core blows statement. Just buy a small gas tank and you'll have it forever. Flux core is for when you are totally out of luck and have no choice, don't intentionally use that |

Id go over to harbor freight in Wilmington and get the green Titanium-140 its a bit more than the Eastwood but far better, along with if you have an issue they are right there and will take it back. There isnt an Eastwood near you so its shipping it back witch will be alot since it weighs over 35-40lbs. I have used a bunch of the HF welders and the new green/orange with digital settings are excellent for a beginner who is looking to self learn. I have been welding for over 25 years and am self taught, learned on a old school Miller mig and Lincoln. RTV900 is right on with what he said about tigging and aluminum welding its very difficult if you have never welded at all, learn steel/iron first.
One point of purchasing advice.....get a good mask not a HF one, in the $100 ballpark. The cheap under $40 auto dim masks are terrible for up close work. Or just go straight old school tinted glass helmet that you can go chap on. I used to sell welders and other import "harbor freight" type tools, that eastwood 135 welder is sold by just about every import tool co out there just with a different name slapped on it. Some go as far as moving the knobs around to make it look different but its essentially the same welder. There are tons of youtube reviews on HF welders and numerous welding how to/tip vids on line. There are tons of youtube reviews on HF welders and numerous welding how to/tip vids on line. In essence to me mig welding is like using a hot glue gun for metal. Dont forget about FB market place and craigslist....hard times = people selling off their toys like welders and supplies.....dont forget to get a right angle grinder too |
