Im seeing if anyone's ever made up an intercooler shroud. Last year I saw Cobb Tuning posted a picture of Bucky Lasek's STI that shoes a custom one he made. Looking to do something similar that I can use on my stock 2010 WRX intercooler and maybe modify if I ever upgrade in the future.

i have yet to see another homemade tmic shroud for our cars. i did see buckys. i have a perrin tmic and it is wider than the stock shroud. i trimmed the rubber edges some being the core is thicker. the core still gets good airflow from the sides being its all open anyway from subaru. its like a rubber mesh pattern. better solution is a good turbo blanket. i have a ptp blanket and its keeps the tmic much cooler on the passenger side.

I have been talking with a friend about it all day. He works for a machine shop, been sending pictures of it too, his looks fairly simple to duplicate.

The main reason I'm asking is for my Carbon Creations hood, higher speeds cause movement and I'm worried long term it will effect the hood itself. Aerocatch latches are installed on it as well. I do not have a shroud or duct directing the air down onto the hood just free flow right now through the scoop to the stock WRX intercooler. I'm hoping to upgrade some day but for now I'm stuck with it. I was looking to basically duplicate Bucky's but for my application that if need be I can modify for a new larger tmic.

I've got one to fit my forester with a GR STI TMIC. I will try to dig up some pics. It is made of 1/8" aluminum IIRC. Mine mounts to the intercooler and has a rubber seal on top to seal to the scoop. Could be a good option with your carbon hood.

i also have been thinking about that shroud ever since i saw it on his car in that launchcontrol video. if/when i upgrade my TMIC, i have been considering making something like that. seems like a fairly easy feat to accomplish? make a cardboard template first! i noticed he had a bbi sticker on it, so i am not sure if he made it or if they did.

I read on his instigram and Facebook, he used BBI's shop to fab his up and is starting to produce but no idea where they are being sold from or cost. I'm sure it can be made for under $100 easily, might take some time tho.

I would also like to see pics!

Not my pictures but this was the prototype of the one that I have. I added a rubber seal around the top to seal to the hood better. Imagine four sides have a tab, the two short side tabs were bent out and rest on the side flanges of the TMIC. The two long tabs fit tightly and creat a bit of a friction fit to keep it in place. Works well for what it is and cost waaaaaay less than the subtle or process west and still wouldn't work with the GR TMIC.

Here's what I've got so far out of cardboard. Going to be making it out of 1/8" aluminum to keep it light.

for the most part that thing looks great!

the transition from that front bottom plate, to the intercooler fins is too drastic tho. rule of thumb (from Corky Bells "Maximum Boost") is any more than a 15* transition and its going to create turbulent air. and on top of that, the air is going to skip right over those lower fins on the intercooler.

the way you recessed the intercooler, i would completely get rid of it. take away those walls on the left, right, and front of the intercooler out. lower the rear of that front plate and sit it right to the front of the intercooler, and then adjust all the other areas as necessary. hope that makes sense

Default Custom intercooler shroud

I think I've got it. Funnel the air into the intercooler with smooth bends and transitions rather then sharper ones. Remove the angled pieces on the bottom side of the duct.

Would be a hell of a lot easier with an STI or aftermarket intercooler. This puny wrx one makes things tight and doesn't give many mounting options.

I'll see if I can spit something out on autocad with some rough dimensions when I get a chance.

Default intercooler shroud

I build one for another car, turned out awesome, I am pretty lucky that I have a laser and CNC press brake where I work! I could probably bang one out pretty quick..

I too saw that video with Bucky and that custom shroud. Very interested in how to reproduce one considering that I have a 11 STI TMIC that I haven't mounted to my 06 Aero since the stock splitter wouldn't provide maximum cooling effectiveness.

Not sure if any of you guys have looked into it, but since i was having the same issues with my GD, I did a little research and found the Grimmspeed to be very close to my ETS TMIC (as opposed to the PW). I know it won't be perfect, but a possible solution for those that aren't able to make something custom.

Edit: Of course if you're only looking for a custom, stock replacement shroud I have no input.

Came up with a prototype but haven't gone through with it yet. The stock intercooler doesn't seem like a good spot to be mounting this too with the amount of air that gets forced through. Waiting on upgrading to a grimmspeed or process west that come with shrouds

I'm tackling this idea with my 2016 WRX STI. Got a ViS Racing hood and the scoop is larger than the stock one. Figured it would be a good idea to put that to work by building proper ducting from the hood to the stock STI intercooler.

Templates are done. Turns out the 2015+ STI intercooler leans slightly to the passenger side, so I had to make sure the measurements accounted for that. Gonna start fabrication this weekend and hopefully get the basic construction completed.

Adding a piece over the top to help direct things around the fiberglass frame the ViS hood has running over the top of the TMIC, which isn't so good for airflow. A piece over the top should help redirect things properly.

More pictures after the weekend.

Getting closer!

A few more things to adjust, then it's gonna get ceramic coated and get a fitted rubber gasket around the edges to seal it up nicely. Pretty pleased with the progress and fitment so far.

Might even be able to reproduce these when we get all the measurements right. Not sure how it'll fit with other aftermarket hoods.
