Default How long do axels last?

So I am planning on some major suspension work on my 02 WRX Wagon. It has 183,000 miles. Struts are shot, strut mounts are done, and several of the bushings have seen better days. I also suspect the wheel bearings are past there prime (some noise). I'll also be pulling the tranny (manual) to replace the rear main seal, clutch, and anything else that should be done with the tranny out (bearings, mounts, etc.)

So this is a project car for my boys and I to wrench on. Our goal is restore with very minor upgrades.

On to my question: I was wondering about the axles. My seem to be in good shape, boots look pretty good with no leaks. No clicks or other noises. I have seen guys open them up and re-grease them, that seems like an okay idea. However, I was wondering if I am already on borrowed time with the axels and boots and it just replacing the whole thing might be a better option? A good set of rebuilt axles isn't super expensive (a touch more than buying new boots). If the axles stay greased, is there much wear? I feel like if I'm tearing everything apart, I might as well do something.

Thanks

One more note. I looked over the maintenance history and did not see anything that indicated any work had been done to the axles or boots. So I'm assuming that they are original to the car. But you know what they say about assumptions..

I would leave it unless you see somethings up. I had an axle boot go twice, same axle so it was replaced twice (passenger front), the second one was warrantied by my mechanic. The other three axles are fine at 18 years and 145k.

I know what you mean. You put it all back together and that's when it happens. Dumb luck.

Thanks. I'll check them over real good and if they look good I'll put them back in.

That axle (passenger front) is exposed to the heat from the downpipe. Just an FYI as to why it's probably the most commonly replaced axle.

This. It's the only one I've had go bad and had to replace.
