I'm having problem with my HID lights I installed into my edm's.the driver's side would fire up instantly when I turn on the lights, but my passenger side would only *sometimes* come on after like a minute or so. I was reading about the voltage drops and such on this thread, but then my HID kit from proxenon came with a seperate relay harness. I used that instead of directly connecting everything. All my connections are secure, properly grounded, and both ballasts and bulbs are fine (I checked by swapping and same results: driver's side comes on while passenger's does not). Also disconnected the DRL module already. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a wrong connection somewhere?

Default Flickering Passenger HID

I'm having a similiar issue with some OEM HID's I installed in a '04 WRX, where the driver side comes on fine, but the passenger side flickers and never activates (I've never left it on for more than 10 seconds since I don't want to burn out the ballast). I've disabled the DRLs, and have ground straight back to the battery. I know the ballast is good, because I can plug the passenger side into the driver side and it works great. In my troubleshooting, I noted that if I leave the connector to the small upper bulb (between the low and high beams) unplugged, the passenger side won't do anything, but the driver side works fine! Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

Did you disconnect the DRL under the hood or behind the glove box? The module in the engine bay is a dropping resistor, and it does not fully disable the DRL system. The plug next to the glove box is the main control module.

Aspec818 - Which relay did you have to replace? I thought both lights were driven off the same relay?

Thanks!

You would have to retrofit them to the back of the JDM light housing. It's doable I'm sure, but it'll take some fabrictaing on your part. Or you can send them in to some of the retrofitters that are out there. It'll cost you a pretty penny though

sooooo, the proper way for me to have HIDs in my bugeye is to get a set of JDM STi lights and then a set of EDM lights and make a hybrid. Thats expensive I have HIDs in my stock housings and I'll be te first one to tell you they suck balls. Anyone wanna buy them

Is it possible to just get a set of EDM's and then stick an hid bulb (H1 type) in and be done with it, or are there other mods that need to be done to the EDM projector? I've got a set of EDM's from Suby Dude and just wanted to know what all I would need to do to convert them to HID.

You really need to change your username

You CAN just stick H1 HID's in the EDM's but they are not designed for HID. They will look cool, but it won't be as good as having a good halogen bulb, or as good as projectors designed for HID (for instance, OEM Audi S4 projectors or something).

Yeah, I put in that name as a joke a while ago and about fell out of my chair when it went through:P

So in other words I could put an HID bulb in, but it wouldn't be as good as a good Halogen bulb. So there really isn't anyway to do a good conversion to HID for an EDM projector without cutting it up?

True HID bulbs come in D2S (for projector light setups) and D2R (for reflector light setups) types. In order to get an HID setup for your EDMs, you'll have to get an adapter ring to change the bulb from D2S to H1. Or you can just buy an HID kit with D2S bulbs and modify your projector unit so that it will house the bulb properly. Instructions on how to do this can be found on the HID forums:

http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/

You will get optimal light output if you were to run an HID kit in projector units that's made for HIDs. Your current EDMs were made for halogen bulbs, and although going with an HID kit "should" be better light output (although it may produce glare due to the optics) than going with a halogen bulb, you will still not be at optimal level without projector units that were made for HID bulbs.

These are for:

2002 JDM HID Sti factory ballasts
Wiring into 2002 US wrx

Would the ground be the Large Black/Small Orange combo, or the Large Blue/Small Brown combo? The Large gauge black wire used to be a part of the bulkhead harness. the Small Orange wire on the other end goes to the ballast.

I've already done quite a bit of searching and reading, but no one seems to mention which wire is the ground on a real JDM HID ballast.

The other side looks like this w/ the Ballast:

Logic would say assume the large black wires are the grounds and assume the large blue and large red are the power wires. But with expensive ballasts assumptions are never good

This thread was of good use as well:

Thanks in advance

ok, I was able to cross reference off of another JDM HID unit which had red and black wires coming out of it instead of this color combo seen above. Black is ground, the Blue and Red/Blue are both Power.

Lights are up and working well thanks to some info taken from here, as well as some light wiring alterations needed for our particular customers car.

Mulder- please note polarity reference incase others need the info down the road.

An option just popped into my head earlier today. Having already opened my headlights once for clearing, I made some observations. Would it be possible to simply swap in the single reflector piece from STi headlights into a regular '04 WRX housing, then utilize one of the McCllough H1 kits? Seems like the light source placement with respect to the reflector and the output couldn't be that significantly different. This way you could salvage reflectors out of wrecked headlights, and save quite a lot of cash, but still be doing much better than just throwing the kit into stock reflectors. Toss on a set of used levelling motors (likely salvaged from the same lights) and your in business, for still quite a bit cheaper than even a used pair of STi lights. Can anyone (pardon the pun) enlighten me? I've never had a chance to look at some open STi units.

Hi, my Question is :
What is the difference between them? Possible to use D2R in Morettes
Thanks Mike

The difference is that D2R bulbs are intended for use in reflector housings and have a black mask printed on the glass to minimize glare. They are otherwise physically and electrically identical to D2S, so you can use them in projectors, however the light output will be reduced somewhat. You could scrape the mask off (gently so as not to break the glass) and effectively turn them into D2S bulbs.

how exactly are projector housings different in terms of whether or not they are made for HIDs or halogens?

The dispersion properties of the light from HID bulbs is different from halogen bulbs, because the light is generated by different means. In addition the amount of light emitted by the HID bulb is much greater. Therefore the optical design of the housing must be different to properly accomodate the type of bulb being used.

I understand why they are different. But what is different about them? How are they made, compared to that of a halogen housing. Basically the point of my question is to see if the housing could be modified to give optimum output for an HID retrofit.

You would have to consult the lighting manufacturers to get the technical specs on the different housings. I don't think it's something you could achieve on your own through modification. If you want to see for yourself how reflector housings are different, try and get the opportunity to compare an 04-05 STi side-by-side with an 04-05 WRX or RS. Look carefully at the divided sections of the reflector, you'll see that they are sized differently on the two types of housing even though at first glance they appear identical.
