I don’t think there is much truth to this. The 86/BRZ worked because it used a lot of the existing Impreza bones and gave Toyota a light weight, FR layout they otherwise didn’t have. Toyota could easily add AWD and a forced induction 2.0L or 1.8L if they wanted a hot compact. Plus, Toyota is already teasing a hot Yaris to follow up the Yaris GRMN. There doesn’t seem to be much incentive for collaboration here... particularly considering that 2 doors are just not selling.

Until those rules change, Subaru is not getting back into WRC. (And freed them up to partake in GRC which came along years later, which doesn't have stupid rules). I do find it interesting that Toyota doesn't have GRC cars when there are other marques that also partake in WRC... Which begs the question, is there an agreement between Subaru and Toyota? Don't know. Just hypothesizing. As far as the hybrid, I'm actually on board with it. Sure, the visceral sound will be gone/much diminished, that's going to be dangerous for marshalls, so there's going to have to be something to let people up ahead there's a car coming. And in an off, a new challenge, have you now electrified the body of the car and spectators can't flip you over? I know many are CF already... but exposing electric current may not be wise. However, the benefits are two fold in my eyes... 1) If the ICE engine fails on stage, might they still be able to finish under electric? How many times has someone lost because of simple engine failure (or something breaking in it?) Electric, fewer moving parts. 2) Most Subarus are still built to be field serviced. All the components easily changable, even the transmission. I.e., at Service on a rally. Been like that since the 90s. Compared to other marques, working on a Subaru is easy. With hybrid, and participating marques, they're going to find a way (via race cars) to easily swap these items in/out, because they are going to have to be. That usually trickles down into the cars we can buy at the dealers, making service on them easier too. I'm just not sure if the plusses (oh, add in instant torque... or, can they have a KERS system for a portion of the stage?), outweigh the negatives. Saftey of all is a big thing to me. --kC |

It harkens back to the P1800 wagon... Which is why I liked it.

Doubt this would be next-gen WRX/STI - its late 2019, and we should be much further along than articles just now surfacing about a partnership starting. It should be showing up at car shows any time now as a far along concept.
Also, the WRX was popular because it was a do everything "outdoorsy person" affordable performance car.. it fit the needs of a lot of people. turn it into a coupe and the car is useless to a lot of people with families and unlikely to support a roof rack and no room for "outdoorsy" stuff inside. It would sell like a BRZ (maybe a bit better). I think a crossover STI (actual STI) would sell like hotcakes over a coupe. |

Of course, it was a bigger deal to us because they were actually bringing it to the US. Now, it's all about the design. I think they just may have something up their sleeve, but... lack of seeing it out testing anywhere, usually there's a spyshot or something from a track (and they love the Nurburgring). --kC |

I think the complete lack of mules or camo'd cars seems to indicate Subaru is really holding this design secret or nothing exists.

Something exists. I've talked to someone who has physically seen it. It's just a matter of "when".

with any luck, that matter of when is spring 2020 in NY, followed by summer 2020 in dealers. they want to make us sweat it out until the first teaser pics are announced. it is possible the Japanese magazines reveal it before we see it in person.

they might have tested the new engine out in a 2020 STI body and kept the actual body the engine is going into under heavy wraps to prevent speculation.

Would they go through the trouble of camoing one up? Don't know, may not need to. That said... crash testing would probably require it. --kC |

I think the more curious thing is that we haven't seen ANY hints to the design rolling around. We saw the 2015 WRX mules rolling around a year before they came out, and there was at least chatter on it. This has been complete radio silence minus these "rumor" articles that pop up every few months. My guess is that it's not anywhere near done yet, who's to say they won't let the model die for a year or two before bringing it back - a la the Golf R? |

Which to me means you're an outsider here, baiting and smirking. That kind of fundamental duplicity therefore infects everything you say. No wonder some find much of what you say suspect. |

Not to my knowledge. Ever.
It's because you're impeachable that I figured my tongue in cheek accusation was obvious, and me goading you to spill the beans... although I knew you couldn't and figured you'd respond as you did. Now... any little tidbit you CAN share?? |

We still haven't had our ***8216;EJ Sendoff Milk Model in special Skim Milk Metallic White' model. It'll be MY21. We'll see something new MY22. All of us GenXers need a meme of that skeleton sitting on the bench waiting for the new TOOL album, crept waiting for the next STI. |

Why all this talk of a coupe, Subaru? Bring back what everyone really wants. A nice manual wagon WRX! Full on wagon. Not a hatch. But the real deal. A segment that is now owned by... VW Sportwagen's? Subaru could easily out perform any VW sales with a manual WRX option there... Miss those.
