Default FA20DIT: Exhaust Suggestions without drone

Hello all,

Long story short I recently purchased and am now returning a remark muffler delete. Build quality was good, but had too much drone at 80mph/3k RPM. I thought the resonator would be enough, but was incorrect. I have a long highway commute each day so highway cruising speed matters.

I'm really looking for something that sounds stock'ish until you really open up the throttle? No drone, just a bit more snarl. Maybe something that doesn't open up until 4-5K rpm?

Let me know if anyone has any advice on exhausts I should be looking into.

Thanks,
Mike

I'd say the Nvidia q300. I personally don't have it but have drove a friends who does. It's a pretty quiet setup. I have an mrt turbo back 1 year in now and I really dont think the drone is too bad.

*Invidia. I think he needs an exhaust not a Graphics chip, but who knows.

Q300 though is exactly what you're looking for. You'd need to buy a full catback as I don't think the axelback portion will mate to anything (without some fab) besides the Invidia midpipe.

I have the same requirements and went with the ETS muffled axleback and added sti midpipe w/ resonator.

No highway drone, the tone is good and still sounds good at idle and warmed up.

Does have a bit of volume when you open her up too but still restrained.

Q300 is by far the quietest. Cobb would be next. I have the Cobb unit and I have zero complaints about it except I wish it were louder (which is the exact opposite of what you're aiming for).

What you need is any setup that has a midpipe resonator, as that kills the drone effect. Invidia, nameless, tomei, sti midpipe etc.. or have one custom welded into your current setup. Without the resonator it doesn't really matter what you put on either side, at highway speeds your car will drone. Good luck.

+1 for the Q300 suggestion. Or, if you have a little more money to drop, I've heard very good things about the HKS Legamax exhaust as well.

Why do people think that deleting mufflers is ever a good idea?

Q300. HKS super turbo.

Q300 on my car. With a catless Jpipe and its still pretty quiet while just cruising and still pretty loud when gettin on it. IMO its a best of both worlds.

I love my muffler delete, perfect volume, no drone, maybe cause I barely cruise on the highway like OP

Nameless 5 inch muffler version combined with their mid pipe (also resonated) is what your looking for. 50 mile daily commuter here.

Can't be happier with mine. Still stock j pipe, but will go Cobb resonated when the day comes

Another vote for the Cobb. A little louder on normal driving, not too loud. Volume increases nicely with RPM's with out getting obnoxious.

I went with a catless, resonated ets dp and an sti midpipe with stock ab's and it's drone free and has a refined note when it's squeezed.

I’ll throw another option into the debate. MAPerformance catback exhaust with mufflers. Had it for a year and a half now and it is still quite and perfect for the highway.

Here’s yet another option, the STI SPT (resonated) exhaust. I got mine for cheap and it sounds good with a catted J pipe. Very stockish but opens up when you get on the gas. It’s the kind of exhaust that your wife won’t get mad at

I sometimes wish I had something louder but I do a lot of highway driving and I can’t deal with droning. It’s also hard to tell because of the supposed reduced cabin noise in the 2018 but I like it.

Second vote for this. You can pick them up cheap, they're well made and they sound good when you get on it but stay reasonably quiet when you aren't.

My vote is for the HKS Hi-power for zero drone. Sound is slightly throatier than stock but very mellow overall.

here's a video from HKS on youtube but this sounds slightly more aggressive than mine (my guess is they've got an intake or j-pipe causing the increased tone)

I have to agree. The sound driving around backroads is decent. I like it. But it's also very throttle controllable. At 3K rpm on the highway(~80mph) there seems to be no throttle control, it's all drone.

Since I wasn't particularly looking for a big performance boost, I thought muffler deletes would be a cheaper alternative to open up the sound of the boxer.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It is much appreciated. I'll scope out those suggestions.

Just curious, for those of you who have said your setup has no highway drone, what speeds to you generally cruise at on the highway? I myself am usually between 72-80. At 70/71 I can throttle control the Remarks. But by the time I hit 80, forget about it.

Thanks,
Mike

Try driving 65, there’s no drone at all for me.

Quick update: my fiance fell asleep in my car twice this weekend for well over an hour each time during highway driving with this setup on my car. Cruising anywhere from 60-85mph. Really is quiet when I'm not driving aggressively. Had a Nameless system with 4inch muffler prior to this, and all she did was complain about how loud it was. Since the Q300, not a single complaint. Just sayin

Perrin is quieter. My friend has Q300's and my car is significantly quieter than his.

Resonated SPT- no drone ever. Cruising all the way up to 80. No drone cruising at high RPMs in other gears

Cobb catback is pretty tame although much better than stock, especially when getting on the throttle. Saving up $$$ for the j-pipe. I can't have anything too loud due to my neighbors.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Corsa since the thread is specifically about zero drone. Less drone even than stock, super tame just putting around town, but makes amazing sounds when WOT.
I'm regularly cruising at 78-80 mph to keep up with traffic around the beltway here.
