No issues, but with the caveat that this is not a DD. If I'm not good about putting it on the charger in the summer the car will be dead somewhere between 1-2 weeks (figured that out this year). I also don't drive it past October here so I never really need to start it when it's cold-cold so I can't comment on cold cranking ability.

The mount is still solid, it's held up to some aggressive drag strip launches and hasn't budged. It also has plenty of cranking power in the summer.

Mostly gutted at this point. Dash is out and stripped of all the venting and passenger air bag (which weighs almost 10 pounds by itself). Just need to drop the dash bar to finish pulling the heater core and then pull the driver air bag. Then it's all the crappy detail work. Stripping wire harnesses, removing all the plastic clips from the body work, removing the liners from the floor and stripping insulation off the fire wall. Good thing I have five months to get this all done.

I did throw my space heater inside the car so at least it's nice and toasty when I'm working in there.

Picture of progress, not much in the last couple weeks.

I still need to drop the dash bar and get the rest of the heater core out. Should then be able to go after the insulation around the firewall. I also popped off my steering wheel to pull the airbag. I was hoping there would be a way to remove the airbag and put the cover back on but no dice. Looks terrible like that so I ordered a new wheel.

Coming this week - OMP six point harnesses, OMP Velocita 380 steering wheel in leather. On order - NRG hub and QR.

I'm going to be out of country for work for the next couple weeks so I'll be spending zero time on it until mid-December. I figure by then I'll have the major work done, then it's the grunt work to pull the sound deadening on the floor... Dry ice should make that easy.

I am NOT looking forward to stripping the wiring out but I really want to clean up that mess. I also figure I'm going to remove everything going to the rear doors except for the interior handles. I believe if I disconnect all electrical and just lock them from the inside they'll stay that way unless I unlock them manually. That will take a good portion of the wiring out from the back half of the car.

Made some decent progress today... Got the rest of the HVAC out, managed to strip all the insulation off of the firewall, and removed electrical running to the rear doors Haven't weighed the insulation but the balance of the HVAC was 7 pounds and my steering wheel is 2.5 versus 7. Insulation was maaaaaaaybe 5 so let's just say I got another 15 pounds out of it today.

I really like this OMP steering wheel, it's the same diameter as stock which is what I wanted due to the lack of power steering....
I did not want to make it even more difficult with a smaller wheel.

I'm not sure if I'll use the QD or not at this point. Being a flat dish wheel once I have the hub installed it'll sit pretty much like stock. If I add the QD I may not be able to reach the stalks on the steering column with my hands on the wheel. I also don't know that I'll need to pull the wheel off to get in and out. I figure once the cage is done I'll see if I need it or not. I'm thinking I don't need it at this point.

This is all my progress for a couple weeks. Off to india! Figure once I get back I'll continue on wiring clean up and then buy a whole mess of dry ice and get the sound deadening off the floor. After that, it's time to drill some spot welds. Lots of brackets to take off the interior. After that, tata windshield and roof skin!

Harnesses came in... Gotta love when your major purchases line up with the holiday sales..... OMP six point setup, two sets for $400. These are normally $375 a piece. Not bad at all.

Back from India and recovered from a stomach bug that I got from my kids when I got back. Go figure, I was safer in India.

Not much progress but I spent about an hour today and looped the coolant lines from the heater core removal and removed the evap hard line from the engine bay all the way back to the trunk area where the evap used to be.

Found a small heater hose that worked perfectly. It's a gates piece, 5/8" ID per the OEM hose size:

Connect these two lines out of the back of the block:

Use the OEM clamps and voila:

Cut up evap line:

I'm on vacation till after the new year so hopefully I find time to wrap up consolidating the wiring to the car, remove deadening, fix the grommet I popped out from around the steering column cuz my jack slipped, and remove some scrap metal (seat bases and other miscellaneous brackets/studs no longer needed).

After that I just need to get the roof off, get the coolant system burped and otherwise make sure my wiring hacks don't mess with the car and I'll be ready. Figure I'll order seats in January since they have a two month lead time, and hopefully the roof will be ready for fabrication by then as well.

Putting deposit down on the roof skin today! It's not in production yet but will be soon and I want to get my spot in line as lead times are already at 8-9 weeks. For anybody looking for a true CF roof skin replacement for the GR, the only option currently is from Aerosim and it's $1,750. Another company is working their version now, is also a true full CF skin (replacement, not overlay) and is priced at bit over half the Aerosim. I figure I shouldn't say who just yet since they haven't gone public with it.

I should be able to get back in the car to start pulling the wire harness from the back half of the car today as well. I figure I'll remove it from the car and hack away in the comfort of my warm house.

Great to see where you can save weight and just how much you're saving. Love that OMP wheel. Sub'd.

Bulk of the excess wiring from the driver's side is out. Have a bit more to take out then it's on to the passenger side. There really isn't a lot coming off the passenger side, but I'll at least be able to clean it up a bit.

Wiring from driver's side is out. There may be more I can remove, but I want to check before I do it. Door jamb sensors and keyless entry unit. If I can remove those two things the harness will basically only be for the left side abs sensor and tail light assembly.

Either way, the driver's side is ready for sound deadening removal. I'll work the wiring on the passenger side next and move onto the deadening. After that time for seat mounts and random brackets to come out.

Wiring is pretty much done being stripped. Last thing to do is figure out how to get some wires jumped... Looks like the passenger tail and hatch wiring came through the under the front seats and were fed from the driver's side of the car. I want to eliminate that section of wire so I just need to figure out what wires to tap on the driver's side to feed the passenger. I can do that along the trunk, not all the way up front.

At this point I'm ready to remove deadening, so maybe I'll do some science this weekend.

Sound deadening is out! Only took 15 pounds of dry ice, about half a gallon of rubbing alcohol and about an hour. It came up easy except where the deadening was on top of seam sealer, and a couple spots on the trans tunnel. Oh yeah, it added up to about 16 pounds.

Dug though my FSMs and figured out what wires I need to jump (at least the systems) - brake and backup lamps, which will be a simple jump to the drivers side. Then the passenger turn signal, which I'll need to run all the way back to the bulkhead plug. The fourth one was for the rear wipers which I've removed so I don't need to worry about that one.

So all I need to do is tap the correct wires for the brake and backup from the drivers side, run a wire along the drivers side to feed the turn signal on the passenger side and I should be all set. Fingers crossed.

Once I sort the wiring out I'll plug everything back in to see if everything is working like it should. I'll also test to see if I can just remove the keyless entry unit and door jamb sensors. If I can remove those with no issue I'll do a bit more stripping on the harness then start to loam and tape it back together.

I'm not touching anything along the bulkhead. There's too much there and I have no doubt things will start to get weird if I attempt to start removing what I don't think I need there. I'll just zip tie things up in place so they're hidden. The one thing I do want to do is mount the ECU to the dash bar now that the airbag won't be in the way in that area.

Basic to-do list:

Fix wiring to tail lamp and hatch
Re-install intercooler
Burp coolant
Test wiring, remove any more if I can
Tape and loam up the wiring
Fix steering column grommet
Remove existing seat bases
Remove any other scrap metal from the car
Clean up floor boards, probably wire wheel them
Remove windshield
Remove roof and all the but far forward and rear supports
Install steering wheel and get the horn working
Send pictures to my cage fabricator and get his opinion on how well the car is prepped

My only real concern is if he's going to want the dash bar taken out. If he does then I guess I need to get the wire harness free so the bar can come out, then just pull the steering column out

Wiring hack job was a 99.9% success. I finished my hacking and did the rewiring I needed for the right side tail light. Got everything plugged back in and rough taped it so it somewhat resembles not a total mess. Plugged the cluster and what not back in and fired the car up. Everything works as it should, and my illumination/dimming still works as well. The only weird thing is the power locks, when I lock them they unlock after a brief pause... Not a big deal.

I also figured out I do not need the door ajar sensors as they are all unplugged and I get no light in the dash. Plug them in and the light pops up. So I've figured out they are a normally open switch to ground so they can be cut out. I also determined the car seems fine without the keyless entry unit, but I do want to check that I can unlock the car with the key and not have issues with the alarm still being active.

I also got the intercooler back on and just need to top off and burp the coolant.

Where I rerouted for the tails:

Tied in on other side:

Jerry rigged dash to test it all out:

He's already excited for May when we can drive this thing again.

We'll see, I may spend the time tonight after the kids go to bed to finish up the wiring.

Got the wiring pretty much finished. Removed all four door ajar harnesses, harness for the keyless entry since it doesn't appear to be an issue, and also removed the wire leading to the ebrake switch. That is another typically open circuit so I won't have a light on the dash.

Feels good to be done messing with wires. Now I just need to put it all in conduit and move on to the next step.... Removing sheet metal.

Wiring is all wrapped up. I cleaned up the routing and re-loomed it all and it looks nice. With the wiring done I feel a lot better about getting this thing in shape before April. I was legitimately concerned I would mess some random system up pulling out as much as I did. All told I removed six pounds of wiring.... Which is a lot of LF of 16 and 18 gauge wire.

Next step, drilling spot welds!

Seats ordered.

Tillett B6 in Carbon/GRP. One regular width for me, the passenger I went with the XL to accommodate my passengers of various heft.

All this carbon is getting expensive! The good news is these seats weight less than 20 pounds combined compared to 92 for the stock front seats.

Thanks man, it's nice to see the car slowly taking shape and getting to the point that I've been imagining for a long time now.

I was able to find 45 minutes tonight and got started on removing metal. Managed to get the spare tire mount then some mounts from long removed systems in the hatch area.

Still more to go but the spot weld cutters I got work great. These initial brackets don't weigh much but it's nice to just clean up the interior. I'm guessing the seat brackets have some decent heft to them, but fingers crossed I get 15-20 pounds of metal out of the car.

It also seems that good old gear oil is a great cutting oil. Whodathunk

Cool stuff. Any estimates on how much it currently weighs? I looked back through and didn’t see any numbers on the last few pages...just what your goals are.

Curb weight for narrow body hatch is 3175 I think?

I haven't weighted it since before the six speed swap but it was 2,799 wet before the swap.

I figure it was around 2,825 or so before I started this latest phase since I did a light battery and trans cross member along with the heavier drivetrain.

With the added weight of the cage and everything I'm pulling out now I'm hoping to be in the low 2,700 range when this phase is complete. I figure I have a couple hundred more to go so stretch goal is to get it to 2,500 or less wet.

The biggest reductions to go are drag brakes, lexan, CF front doors (hopefully the same guy making my roof will also make dry carbon doors), CF hatch, gut rear doors, even lighter 15" wheels for the race setup, coilovers, and tubular f/r subframes from the guy that did my trans cross member.

Default Ricer's 2009 WRX Build: Extreme Weight Loss and Mo Power

That’s pretty impressive for a GR. Especially with a 6 speed. It’s gonna suck when you add the cage’s weight back, but it seems like you have plenty of things to offset that weight and keep getting lighter. I look forward to final numbers.

2500’s have been my goal for a while as well. Granted, I have a coupe so it’s a little easier

Yeah, bit easier for you but still tough. Chromoly on the cage is helping keep weight down. I did the rough math and I figure it'll land around 85 lbs.
