Of course that's better, but someone who wants a Nespresso isn't going to go through that process, but they may be swayed by a super auto. It is the right tool for the job, for some people. Every one I can sway away from pods is a win for coffee as a whole.

I'm not a fan of percolator, they over extract. But if you like it...

I agree, but a rushed manual espresso, aeropress, or pour-over is not always great. There are mornings when a super-auto would be nice.

I have my drip machine on a wifi plug. It's timed to go on at 5:45a and off at 6:00a. At night I grind and put in the filter, and add water. In the morning I our my cup, and walk out the door. Couldn't be easier.

used to have a similar routine with my brikka but haven't used it in a while.

these days i keep my espresso machine on a timer plug that comes on 20mins before i wake up. my routine takes about five minutes (dose/weigh, flush/purge, grind, wdt, tamp, lock, pull, steam while the shot runs, pour, wipe down) and i enjoy the ritual as part of my morning (turn on the news or have a podcast running at the same time, think about stuff). simple pleasures. not for everyone, i realize.

luckily, it's kind of rare that i need to wake up early for work so i usually just wake up to play barista and make a cortado/gibraltar for my wife. i tend to start the day with a latte so i can see what kind of day it's going to be based on how the rosetta turns out

You grind the night before? Any noticeable difference between doing that and grinding just before you brew?

I do it so I don't wake the family at 530am. No, I don't notice a difference, but I haven't tasted fresh back to back with it. I have ground coffee and used it daily, and the difference is slight on the second day, and pronounced on the 3rd,to where anyone could taste it.

Of course this is for drip. Espresso is completely different; minutes matter.

Yeah, I'm with you there. Espresso doesn't take much time at all. It's the warmup that kills, but my wifi plug fixes all that.

Only reason I don't do it during the week is grinder noise.

I will probably order some more next week.

There are 4 local roasters that I know of near here. Mini reviews

Griffin Creek, Ashland - I like every one I have had. It is only sold at a 2 co-ops and at the grower's markets. A cup is $1 at the stand. They take back coffee that has be at the store I think for 2 weeks. I believe it is one guy, and some help at the markets. Until recently he was running things by himself. I think it was $12 for 12oz

Limestone, Medford - Every time I have been happy, both in store cups (pour over) and bags. The shop is cool. IIRC it was $12 for 12oz.

Case, Ashland - I haven't bought their beans because I didn't really like the coffee when I got some. I don;t even remember why. I should try again. Another expensive place. $5, but you got a little carafe so I think you got about 1/2 l. $18 for a 10.5 oz bag. That seems weird to me because he is a across the campus from SOU.

Noble, Ashland- I don't like them very much. The coffee they serve in shop is always bitter or sour, and I expect they are doing things correctly. When I have had beans, it just wasn't great and they are expensive, $18 for 12oz sold 25 feet from the roaster. You would think at least it would be a bit less expensive there so you would come in and spend $3 on a cup.

If the Gaggia Syncrony is any good, that refurb price makes it really affordible.

refurb is out of stock, but the new one looks to be on sale for $340. Hmm. How many shots can you make with a pound of coffee? Is it different for each machine and bean?

It's about 25-30 ish. It would pay off fairly quick over a year or two, compared to nespresso or Starbucks.

I get 24 shots out of a 1 lb bag. This is with a double basket and an 18.5g dose. I usually budget 2-3 shots to dial in the grind...YMMV with an auto machine though
