Not to diminish from this, but to be fair, Subaru can't advertise any number other than the EPA numbers, which are measured with a strict procedure.
What a car company can do, is to engineer their vehicle to perform especially well on the EPA test, better than real life.
However, it may take few more thousand miles to get to the optimum MPG, so there is still hope.

I currently have around 500 miles on 5door premium and currently showing 30 mpg mixed city driving i hope to see it increase 1 to 2 miles a gallon for this type of driving, if not i still love the car

Have you computed it yourself or are you relying on the on-dash gauge. The gauge is over by 1-3 mpg from what we've all gathered.

Actually the on-dash display may very from being low, accurate, or high. After about 5/6 tank fills, you can ask you dealer to adjust it (they have the procedure). You will need to let them know of the deviations in 1% intervals. This is the procedure that is also used to set the outside temperature that is displayed (an additional step in that same procedure/matrix).

You can also do this yourself; however, it looks to be a real PITA.

I got about 1400 miles now on my 2012 Sport Premium. Did a number of MPG estimates. I got 22-23mpg driving quasi aggressively 70+ mph (approx 120 miles/day, 90 of which are hwy) Then I got 25-27 during the same commute by changing driving style slightly and abusing the cruise control. (65+ mph vice 70+) I just cant drive too much slower than that without being annoyed. I'll give it a good shot at a slightly slower speed in a few weeks.

I have a 95 legacy wagon that i'm keeping alive that gets almost as good mpg as this thing and i'm not very happy with this. It's a good car so far and it's nice to drive around in a brand new ride but I expected more from the watered down engine, reduced weight, and cvt. Hopefully the whole "engine break-in" idea actually works out an I get better efficiency. Not expecting much though. I still dont get how breaking in an engine improves mileage. It should run to spec right out of the box, but this is merely an unsupported opinion.

So you gained a huge 4 mpg by slowing down 5-7 mph... The Imp is not aerodynamic...

It's not just the engine breaking in. Every piece that spins will gain clearance, and smooth out. Gears, CV joints, bushings, seals, bearings.

My 2000 Outback showed a big jump in mpg after the first 8,000 miles. I was commuting 100 miles one-way, and could duplicate mpg tank-after-tank.

To get truly great MPGs not only do you have to get used to being annoyed, but being annoying. Things like slowing down far in advance of a red light to avoid stopping, accelerating at round 2k rpm, those are the things that will get us over the epa estimates. You have to start approaching it like a game between you and the car, that'll get rid of some of the annoyance.

It is also winter and yes, we all have pretty much new cars. Give it at least until the summer to see if anyone starts getting good numbers.

subiTWO, my numbers are probably off a bit but the approximation is about right. When you look at it like a game it does seem a bit easier to handle all the different facets of "annoyance" LOL. I'll keep trying and we'll see what happens this summer. I hope we all get some good numbers and we also get to keep them up.

On Fuelly.com, the 97 Integras are averaging (with summer/fall temps) mostly 25-27 mpg with today's fuel. Real-world people trying to get great gas mileage.

The '12 Imps are getting mostly 26-28 mpg with cold winter temps and winter gas. With much stricter emissions requirements, hundreds of more pounds to tote around, and a doubling of driveline friction.

^^^Not sure what the point of this statement is.

I got rid of my Integra years ago, but I am 100% positive I had better mileage than those STILL driving a car from '97. I got 32-34 mpg on that car consistently driving it well above the mph for suggested optimum fuel economy. If I was still driving it today I wouldn't be getting as good of mileage considering all cars I've driven close to 200k miles have gone down MPG wise near the end of my time with the car. I wasn't lying about the mileage I got.

I was making a point that on a car that didn't sell based on advertised MPG & that I beat to **** & raced around in it got great #s & on a car I bought because of their advertised MPG I'm driving it conservatively & have yet to hit the city MPG.

I can do that if that's what you guys want. That thread was created two days after this one and has so much cross talk and MPG estimates from other cars though. The purpose of this thread is for Impreza owners to compare their mileage with other Impreza owners as it seems to be a lot lower than the advertised EPA numbers.

GFY... still POINTLESS to me. I don't care what people still driving them get. I got better mileage when I drove mine... years ago.

Sure you did... You got FIFTY percent better mileage while racing around, when people who are actually, you know, logging their data on a website are trying to get better mileage while pussyfooting it.

And on top of that, you have absolutely no clue (per your own admission) why a heavier, AWD, near-zero emissions car drinking E10 would get worse mileage than the Integra. GFY? How about taking a critical-thinking course, instead of spending time learning TLA's?

Get over yourself! Sorry I didn't log my data ten years ago for you to be looking at today & I could give a ***** what you think.

Nothing was "per my admission" it was per your assumption. I thought your post was... pointless... because I never mentioned certain factors as to why the Subaru doesn't have the mileage that say a Civic has for obvious reasons. I get that. My point was on other cars people can easily get over the EPA rating while with the Impreza people aren't even getting close in some situations. Effective reading skills could use some work before you a counter a point that was never made in the first place. Your math skills could use some improvement too.

Gee... I can't imagine how I could've gotten 32-34 mpg on a 97 Integra when fuelly's sample of 13 cars doesn't say so. It was only EPA rated for 31 mpg highway.

Living in Vermont driving mostly 'city' and I'm getting around 23mpg.

When I throw in the highway it jumps up but the trip from Connecticut to Vermont I only got 29mpg. It's difficult with all the hills to go up too. I had to turn off the MPG counter and especially the active count - I was getting too annoyed watching it drop to 12mpg going up hills.

It's lower then I hoped but it's on par with my previous car and that was my big concern.

I think in my case a mix of hilly highway + getting used to how the car drives compared to my 2000 Honda Civic is a big factor.

Perks have you tried using the manual mode at all? I think it will do better than the cvt at constant speeds above 60mph. The CVT will tend to shift up or down needlessly due to small grade changes, while the manual mode keeps the engine more constant at a very high gear ratio. If you're not familiar with manual shifting, it is really quite simple. The gear number shows up in the gauge and little arrows tell you when to upshift. The car will also automatically downshift when you slow down, so you only have to worry about upshifting. You can also switch modes while driving.

In both cases, we're getting slightly more than the EPA hwy figure with our old cars and way below the EPA hwy figure with the Impreza. Same commute routes. Same drivers.
