Just did this. Finding a large nut for the Allen head to rest in the threaded area worked well. Plus the heat from welding helped free it up I'm sure.

I always have a buddy help and, before I strip it out, use an impact and allen socket and have a large pipe wrench on the base of the socket to apply constant pressure. Then the impact wrench can easily hammer it off. This is pretty cool if you strip it out though

On the one I just did, I put the 10mm allen wrench on it hit it with a hammer to seat it nice and firm, and put a cheater bar on that, turned it... The wrench turned! However, the bolt did not. Then we were left with a stripped bolt, an old rusty 11/16ths craftsman wrench I found in the back of a WRX I had recently parted out, and a welder. So being 2 idiots we naturally welded the box end of the wrench to the bolt! However, we forgot to cut the open end off before welding it, and our cheater bar would not fit around the open end. So, we busted out the good o'll sawzall of late 90's vintage and hacked the open end off of it while it was still on the motor. Holding the open end without gloves on as your buddy sawzalls through otherwise unsupported metal an inch from your hand was probably not the safest thing I've ever done, but it worked out. Open end off, cheater bar on, belt on the cam gears and wrapped around to anchor on the conveniently located coolant pipe, and it came off no problem. Lucky we had a donor motor or two to steal an extra cam bolt off of.
I actually returned that craftsman wrench to an Ace Hardware and got a new one, bolt still welded on to it and all. Welding a bolt on to it is nice and all, but a good old cheater bar will put more torque to the affixed implement then the best air tools. And it just feels better too. I have a 3/8ths air wrench and a 1/2 air impact and only the air wrench ever really gets used. It IS fun to impact off lugnuts though. Enough torque to round off even grade 8's! It's a cool tool but by no means will it save you in this situation. That said, I may want one. |
