Default TIC unabomber's sexy rear end

Free shipping and little green paratroopers FTW. So, after reliving the childhood(looking like a total ass) throwing the little green guys around and trying to explain to my neighbor that i was sane and no I didn't purchase them to lure kiddies to my doorstep, I went ahead with the install.

2 months later.

ok, so I'm rather lazy and it was cold outside. but eventually I got the diff mounts installed, while it appears it can be done alone in about an hour. But the alignment guys did it for free. NE way, installed the rear pivot bushings and the sub-frame locks in my driveway. overall theres less play in the rear end, and it stays planted. pretty good/ cheap buy. i recommend to anyone looking to shore up the rear end, but there is an increase in NVH, which I could barely notice because my car is borderline obnoxious anyway.

I'm waiting for TiC to get this kit back in stock and I will be buying them. Then anytime all the snow melts I'll be able to install it. Good review, thanks.

ok,a few spirited drives has reveiled to me a couple things. the car doesn't get that light feeling in the rear when im aggressive in the hills. could be a combination with new tires and the addition of an STI rear wing also. the response is a little sensitive(fast) since everything is locked in the rear, and teh clunk is gone. for the enthusiast its a must have.

current suspension mods
hr springs
helix front sway
perrin rear sway hardest setting
rear tower bar
perrin endlinks
toxiko blue front/koni red rear shocks
225/40/18 kumho asx(brand new)

hope this helps, think I'll add the psrs and some gt-spec braces in the near future, also thinking of going with some D-specs, but I truly love my current setup

i, too, purchased this great package a while ago. i have to say that after driving on it for a couple of months i feel the rearend is more quickly to react and more positive (no more vagueness or wandering). of course, my stock tires need replacing within the next two months so i can only imagine what this would feel like with better tires and a good alignment!

the more i drive, the more i feel that this is the way that subies are supposed to be. there is more NVH (i hear the whining of the rearend the loudest at 60mph) but its a small sacrifice for such a wonderful feeling in the rearend.

Current mods in chronological order:

sedan rsb
Helix pillowball rearend links (now making noise, originally installed 2-3 yrs ago)
Whiteline r&p bushings
Whiteline rear strut bar
TiC Giuyngmyo Fender Cowl Brace (one of the best front end mods)
HKS Grounding Kit
Samco intercooler hoses
Kartboy pitch stop mount (from TiC)
Unabomber's Sexy Rear End (from TiC, unfortunately i purchased them prior the package)
TiC 5mt Lever Pivot Bushings
TiC Tranny Crossmember Bushings (i think they're a better design b/c no cutting is necessary. just lube and pope 'em in)
TiC 5mt Linkage Update
Kartboy Shifter Bushings F/R Combo 5mt (from TiC)
Group N "STi" Tranny mount
Perrin Lightweight Crank Pulley

so far, everything i've read on and purchased from TiC has not disapppointed one bit. what i know is coming from stock to this point seems like a big difference in performance without stretching the wallet.

So to speak

I usually dont make childish posts about things like this, but this one just had to be showcased.

Seriously though. How noticeable is the NVH? Scale of 1 to 10 , 1 being not at all, 10 being completely obnoxious?

i read somewhere that you should only keep the locking bolt in while doing autox or something like that because it messes with your alignment

anyone hear anything like that

If you're referring to the subframe locking bolts, that statement is included in the Whiteline instructions.
I've had mine in for ~90,000 miles with no problems, and I'm not the only one.
The statement is a disclaimer for legal purposes, so I'm told.

Default bushings

I had the pitch stop mount, rear diff bushings and outrigger bushings installed on my Cobb Stage 2 WRX this week. Wow....A much more solid, connected feel to the car. These bushings have had a amazing difference on how the car feels. The bucking and lurching is gone...I should have installed these a long time ago. Awesome..If anyone is considering doing these, don't hestitate....
I also installed the rear shifter bushings and pivot bushings..... The front shifter bushings were installed awhile ago and these make an amazing difference.

The little green paratroopers guysl ove to fly off my back deck!!

It's not that it causes an alignment problem. It's just recommended to get an alignment after you use the subframe locking bolts. I've had mine for about 40,000 miles... and have had no problems at all.

obviously, this is going to be subjective...but, imho, the Whiteline Subframe bolts would be a major cause of the noise (an immediate connection to the rearend without insulation), would be a 5/10. but if you're having fun (spirited driving), i believe this number would go down.

the noise is most prominent (for my baby) while maintaining 60mph with diminishing effects at higher and lower speeds, mostly +/- 10mph.

so far, everything i've read on and purchased from TiC has not disapppointed one bit. what i know is coming from stock to this point seems like a big difference in performance without stretching the wallet.
First of all, let me state that I have the rear diff bushings installed, not the entire "rear end". Regarding NVH, if your car is very quiet you will notice a fairly quiet whining sound from the rear end on some roads at certain (especially between 2000-3000) rpms. If you have an exhaust much louder than stock, then this is not much of an issue. The bushings alone totally eliminated the rear end clunk for me, but I still sometimes have driveline "slop" at when both speed and rpms are fairly low and getting on or off the gas quickly. I know that many people have stated that this makes a big difference to the rear ends feel, making it MUCH more planted, but for me the difference was very subtle. If I were not able to hear the car and was ask to blind test the car with and without this change, I might not be able to notice the difference, that is how subtle I found it. When I changed rear lateral links and trailing arms I notices a massive change in the behaviour of the rear end with it being much more predictable and quicker to respond. I assume that the rear diff. bushings make a small change, but on their own I honestly actually notice the NVH and not the improvement in feel. That said, I am very happy with the elimination of the clunk when driving hard, which to me is the main benefit of the mod. If given the choice to do it again or not, I probably would go for some other mod first, like cowl stays (I notices a nice improvement in feel and nvh with these), or maybe engine and transmission mounts and the transimission cross member (planning to do this next). However, I don't plan to remove this mod, and I expect the harder rubber to last better than the stock bushings.

Relevant Mods:
STi lateral links
STi Trainling arms
22mm front and rear Cusco swaybars
Cusco front and rear strutbars
Cusco Type2 lower brace
TiC Cowl Stays
Whiteline Group4 Coilovers
Whiteline Steering Rack Bushings
Whiteline ALK
Whiteline Roll center kit
Group N topmounts
Endless SSS brakepads
Goodridge Clutch line
R180 Rear Diff Bushings

Notes:
-Car is world-market car, has light weight front and rear bumpers beams, large foglights, non-airbag seats, etc., so it is a fair bit lighter than the USDM model, plus I have done some minor weight reduction
-I research my mods before doing them, the only mods that I have done and not really been too fond of are the rear diff bushings (TiC makes wonderful products, I just didn't like the tradeoff in this particular case), and the GFB Deceptor Pro (in cabin adjustable BOV, can be adjusted from full recirc to full atmo --- don't buy this BOV, if stopped working and had to be fixed more than once, and I could never get a totally leak free fit for the long term with my APS TMIC, this is the only product I have ever removed and permanently went back to stock, it was fun to use but had negative effects on performance and reliability).

so I installed this kit with COMFORT bushings in a span of 3-4 weeks with about a week between each of the 3 mods in this sexy rearend kit in the following order: Rear Differential Mount Bushings, Outrigger Bushings and Subframe Lock Bolts.

Here are my mods that would in some way influence my review of this kit:
- tranny crossmember bushings
- kartboy shifter, F&R bushings and lever pivot bushings
- F&R sway bars, 25/22mm, respectively
- F&R strut tower braces
- Torque Solution Pitching Stopper
- Maddad TBE

so I followed the rear differential mount bushings installation instructions on TiC's website and the whole install went really smoothly. I think I got some grease or WD-40 on one of the bolts because it wouldn't tighten down to spec so I just measured the threads of the other side and matched it. I took the car for a test drive and wow, the rearend of the car is really planted going into and out of a tight turn. I definitely don't have the "is the rear going to slide out?" thought anymore doing fast and tight turns. It is quite amazing what this simple mod did for me and my car. I also noticed more noise and vibration on the highways, probably around 60-70mph especially going past vehicles (strange?), but it definitely isn't bothersome, it's noise that I appreciate from my car.

so after a week, I installed the Kartboy outrigger bushings (or by-the-manual term differential front end). The install was also really easy but I had to really clean up the area with some shop towels and wd-40 (that's just me, I like to install onto clean surfaces). You can check out the actual specific thread for this mod for my issue but, in short, the passenger side would not install properly because the stock bushing and sleeve isn't pressed all the way into the outrigger so the bottom (thin, large) bushing isn't really doing anything. and of course, the test drive didn't yield any improvement over the differential mount bushings. the issue has nothing to do with this mod - for the record.

next came the subframe lock bolts. this was the easiest install out of the entire kit. luckily, the mounting holes were fairly clean and I actually used too much wd-40 to clean them and resulted in the passenger lock bolt not being able to torque down to spec correctly as it kept wanting to spin no matter how tight. I had to push up the left of the subframe as the subframe and hole weren't exactly aligned. I was also able to get the bushings flush against the subframe, as others have posted not being able to do this. I went for a test drive again, now with the whole kit installed and the rear end feels even more connected to the car. I used the same testing location (safe place, no worries) and I can control the rear now with the throttle very easily now, the rear doesn't own me anymore when it starts to swing out. also, no increase in NVH.

I am very satisfied with this mod, eventhough I wasn't able to really test out the outrigger bushings. with only slight increase in NVH on the highway and the complete transformation of the rear dynamics during turns, this mod is definitely worth it. The car now feels like it can handle more power because it just goes into and out of turns so smoothly with half-to-full thottle applications. If you are thinking about getting this kit, I recommend you do. You even save yourself a few bucks compared to buying each mod separately. and for installing, just make sure you wipe all bolts, studs, nuts before tightening as grease and wd-40 can drastically affect the torque specs.

thanks to TiC for putting together such an awesome kit.

here are some pictures:

right outrigger bushing installed properly, can't say the same for the left

Thumbs up do yourself and favor and drop in a Unabomber's Sexy Rear End

The TIC rear differential bushings + Kartboy subframe bolts were put in this past weekend and there's noticeable difference... not sure why I waited so long to buy and get these in, as everyone says, rear end is much more solid and the clunk is looooong gone!

NVH - Can hear my rear diff a little more, doesn't bother me, I put in the TIC "race" version.

Special thinks to TIC for the install directions. Since I have a press the install was that much easier. Also, thanks for getting those sleeves out to me as soon as you could, customer service ftw.

Existing suspension mods (2002 GDA) -
coilovers
front and rear sway bars with upgraded endlinks all around
front and rear strut bars
front lower arm bar ver. ii variety
pillowball adjustable lateral links
STi control arms
Whiteline alk and diff lock kit (similar to the KB outrigger kit)

CLIFF NOTES - Unabomber's Sexy Rear End - DO EEET

Any thoughts on how to get the mount back into place? I'm struggling with that on my 07 STi.

General Question, what causes the diff whine with this install?

Stiffer bushings means the differential is held in place much better which means the differential will not flop around as much as it would with the stock bushings. this benefit, however, is accompanied by possibly some differential whine as stiffer bushings also means the whine is translated through the chassis. I say possibly because NVH is subjective but general rule of thumb is that stiffer bushings means more NVH.

I do not think you will mind.

Previous mods on 03 wrx:

Perrin Lowering Springs
GroupN motor,trans mounts, pitchstop
Kartboy trans member bushings

Got the Unabomber sexy rearend installed. I was hoping it would fix my low gear&rpm jerking when I let off the gas(it didn't, oh well). Now I actually hear and feel a small clunk or jolt when I let off and get on the gas at around 40 MPH in 3rd, though only at certain inclines (whether up or downhill I'm not sure yet). I have to mention though before the install there was jolt when I let off and get on the gas. Now its just audioable and sharper in feeling. Shifting might be notchier but I know it didn't improve. Car doesn't move up and down as much when I shift.

NVH definitely went up like expected. Car vibrates at around 1,000 to 1,750 rpm in 3rd gear. Lightweight flywheel chatter is louder. Car has trouble accerating as it vibrates.

The rear ends feel responsive when turning

Whether I recommend this or not I don't know. For me the cons outweigh the pros for a DD(mainly notchy shifting). Like the extra NVH is there without helping my bucking and lurching. I may have other problems or issues in the car that weren't directly caused by installing these parts

After driving for a bit it seems like the notchy shifting happened only in warm/hot weather. As it got cooler outside the shifting is smoother. So these are pretty good for tightening the rear end

You've got a million parts that add to stiffness and NVH. Honestly, what were you expecting?
