In 2008, WRC announced that starting in 2010/2011 ish, the cars were going to be based on Super 2000 cars giving them 2+ years to get them working.

Super 2000 uses spec'd transmissions from 2 suppliers I believe... which coincidentially only work with transverse engines. The new rules, based on the S2000 rules, specified the transmission must mate to a transverse engine.

A Subaru boxer engine doesn't mate with a transmission that's looking for transverse connections.

Subaru says, "...we're not going to develop an engine that does, either." "Economic reasons" not to do so... as it would cost a lot of money to develop a system they don't already employ, so it would have to be built from scratch, to never be used in their road cars...

That's "why".

it is possible that the wrx uses the FA20 carried over from the current wrx, just tweaked for more power and responsiveness. the clutch release is beautiful on the current wrx. putting the tweaked FA20 and the improved clutch release in a new body and frame is fairly easy for them. the new frame will help it stay flatter in the corners and shave seconds coming out of turns.

the FA24 in the ascent, outback, and legacy can't go in the STI in that configuration. the piston, valves, ecu, turbo and camshaft have to changed for STI duty. changes to wrx body and frame will help its handling, but the front and rear spoiler should be made to actually give down force. the real challenge for subaru is pairing the FA24 to a brand new manual transmission that can handle the power and torque the engine is capable of and still pass us emissions. the engine paired the cvt is very willing to move and begging to be unchained from the cvt. will subaru surprise us with something we never expected and give us enthusiasts hope again.

So that will leave 3 manufacturers (Ford, Hyundai, Toyota). WRC has issues attracting manufacturers and keeping them. It seems like manufacturers are moving to lower tiered rally series.

Clearly the FA24 will need to be tweaked for performance duty, but a bigger turbo and some head tweaks will fix that without too much fuss. Not sure why they would need a brand new manual transmission- the current STI 6 speed would handle the likely power output just fine.

Is the new 2.4 and STI 6spd same mating surface? No need to reinvent the STI trans it's great. Now, if they bring in a dual clutch auto with paddle shifting.....damn. They get closer and closer to street car might as well make it competitive in that segment. Can you imagine a legit auto trans with almost instantaneous shifts mounted to a dit with a fat torque band. I'd pay the $45k.

Why not just get a Golf R or S3 ? There is no need for an automatic in the STI. The 6 speed is phenomenal. Cars like the STI, CTR, RS are fine without one.

Not really a huge consideration. They might need to design a new bell housing or change the input shaft, but that's a pretty trivial job for an OEM.

The current STI transmission bellhousing will mate to the FA20 & FA24 blocks. Prime Motoring has already mated it to their FA24 swap.

While I'm still not fully awake I'll climb out onto this limb I've been eyeing for a while in my dreams.

There is an STI a little further out than I can get to holding onto the trunk here. Let me inch out a little farther...

I see it now... wow. It's a five door beauty, looking back at me with a hunched malevolence. Maybe some barely repressed anger. Looking closer there's some crumpled magazine pages on the dash... reviews of hot hatches I think. Like it's looking for a prey that's been badgering it for years, only now it's fully grown and angry.

It's there in the grasses, unseen, but the nervous onlookers know it's there, the scent is on the wind. It's coming to ravage the taunters, hungry for blood.

Tomorrow there will be a new king.
